BEIJING, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- Joint police patrols along the Mekong River will kick off in mid December to restore security after a deadly attack to Chinese ships in October.Chinese police will start patrols along the river with Laos, Myanmar and Thailand, said a statement from the Ministry of Public Security here Saturday.No exact date was given, but the first joint patrol will be carried out before Dec. 15, said the statement, issued after a ministerial meeting of four countries held in Beijing.Police from the four will work together to restore shipping and guarantee security along the river, the statement said.Shipping on the Mekong River has been suspended since two cargo ships were attacked on Oct. 5, resulting in the murder of 13 Chinese sailors.A headquarters for the initiative will be founded in China and there will be a coordination office in each of the other three countries. They will be linked by a round-the-clock communication mechanism, the statement said.China will assist Laos and Myanmar police in terms of training and equipment, the statement said.Police departments of the four countries will also set up a coordination team to work out more security measures along the Mekong River, it added.

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- Logitech, a provider of personal peripherals for computers and other digital platforms, said its production of Google TV was a "big mistake," giving a major blow to Google's aspiration to change the traditional TV experience, U.S. media reported on Friday.According to technology news site The Verge, at a recent analyst and investor meeting, Logitech chief executive officer Guerrino De Luca said the launch of Logitech Revue (with Google TV set-top box) last year was "a mistake of implementation of a gigantic nature."The project cost the company more than 100 million U.S. dollars in operating profit.He said the company had "brought closure to the Logitech Revue saga" and has "no plans to introduce another box to replace Revue" after the inventory runs out this quarter.The CEO also predicted that Google TV will have a chance sometime in the future, but it would be a "grandchild of Google TV " that would do it. Logitech has no plans to help make that happen.Launched during the holiday shopping season last year, the Logitech Revue with Google TV system was criticized for being pricey and unpolished although it gives consumers a streamlined experience of traditional TV content and online media. WASHINGTON, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- Children with autism have more brain cells and heavier brains compared to typically developing children, according to a study to be published on Wednesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association.The small, preliminary study provides direct evidence for possible prenatal causes of autism.The prefrontal cortex is involved in various higher order functions such as language and communication, social behavior, mood, and attention. Children who have autism tend to show deficits in such functions.Eric Courchesne, of the University of San Diego School of Medicine Autism Center of Excellence, and colleagues conducted direct counts of brain cells in specific regions of the prefrontal cortex in postmortem brains of seven boys who had autism and six typically developing males, ranging in age from 2-16 years. Most participants had died in accidents, but the researchers did not base their selection on causes of death.The researchers found that children with autism had 67 percent more neurons in the prefrontal cortex and heavier brains for their age compared to typically developing children. Since these neurons are produced before birth, the study's findings suggest that faulty prenatal cell birth or maintenance may be involved in the development of autism. Another possible factor that may contribute to the neuronal excess is a reduction in apoptosis, or programmed cell death, which normally occurs during the third trimester and early postnatal life.Though small, this preliminary study examined all relevant postmortem tissue available at the time. The relative scarcity of tissue from very young children may limit future research as well, but efforts to include a larger number of samples are needed to confirm these findings and to identify patterns of age-related changes in autism, the researchers say."Earlier studies of head circumference and early brain overgrowth have pointed us in this direction, but there have been few quantitative neuroanatomical studies due to the lack of postmortem tissue from children with autism," said Thomas Insel, director of the National Institute of Mental Health, in a statement. "These new results, along with an earlier study reporting altered wiring of the prefrontal cortex, focus our attention on this critical area of the brain in autism."

BEIJING, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- Beijing will offer residents 20,000 rental bikes this year to ease the city's notorious traffic jams, according to authorities with the Beijing Municipal Commission of Development and Reform.Five hundred rental kiosks will be set up around the city to offer residents over 20,000 rental bikes, the commission said.Beijing has also proposed creating new bike lanes in some areas, including main streets, historical and cultural conservation areas and some major business districts, from 2011 to 2015, according to the commission.The capital city currently has about 5 million vehicles on its roads, leading to serious traffic congestion that frustrates the city's residents on a daily basis."A lack of bike lanes is the reason why I refuse to ride a bike. Bikes and vehicles are using the same lanes, and that frightens me and makes me feel unsafe," said Beijing resident Song Tao.People often park cars on the city's existing bike lanes, pushing cyclists onto the vehicles' lanes, said Song.To ease traffic congestion, Beijing has made various efforts to encourage people to opt for modes of public transportation.On Dec. 31, Beijing opened three new subway lines, bringing the number of subway lines in Beijing to 15, with a total length of 372 kilometers, said Beijing Metro Spokesman Jia Peng.Beijing will open four more subway lines in 2012, according to information released at a rail transit construction mobilization conference.Amid other measures to ease traffic in 2011, city authorities decided to allow only 240,000 vehicles to be registered annually, slashing the new car registrations by two-thirds from the 2010 level.Meanwhile, vehicles are banned from roads one day each week according to license plate numbers.
