SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police are investigating an alleged attack on three women in hijabs in Little Italy as a possible hate crime. The incident happened around 12:45 p.m. Sunday on Columbia Street near Beech.Three women in hijabs were walking under scaffolding when a man approached from the other direction. Despite one woman moving to give him room, witnesses say 50-year-old Kyle Allen lunged his shoulder into one of them. "Fists started flying, and it was his fists. He started swinging at the women, trying to hit the woman that he almost knocked down, but he ended up hitting one of the other women," said a witness named Amy, who called 911 during the altercation. A hijab is a headscarf worn by some Muslim women. Amy, who asked us not to use her last name, said she also saw Allen rip off one of the women's hijabs from her face. "As I got closer I heard him calling her names and telling them to go back to where they came from," Amy said. Cell phone video shot after the incident showed Allen, going back and forth with bystanders. He ultimately walked to his high rise apartment around the corner. Witnesses followed him and pointed police in his direction.A San Diego Police spokesman told 10News that Allen greeted officers at his unit with a handgun that had a silencer. He was arrested without incident on firearms, battery, and criminal threat charges. Calls and texts to Allen's phone were not immediately returned. Two police officers were staged on his floor inside his building, but he was not there. Allen is scheduled to be arraigned Oct. 21. 1583

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County is seeing far fewer influenza cases at this point in the flu season compared to last year, due in part to coronavirus-related safety measures, according to public health officials. So far this season, the county has recorded 39 influenza cases, compared to 1,220 cases at this point last season. Flu season generally runs from October through May, with flu activity peaking in December and February. The county says it's "very likely" physical distancing, hand washing, and mask-wearing are contributing to the low flu activity."Influenza activity remains very low to date this season in San Diego County. This is very likely due to the social distancing, hand washing, and mask-wearing interventions instituted to reduce the transmission of SARS-CoV2, the virus that causes COVID-19," the county's influenza report said. Health officials say influenza vaccination rates are also contributing to the lower numbers. So far this season, 1,043,552 San Diegans have been vaccinated for the flu. Last season, a total of 1,234,474 flu shots were administered. 1095

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Rep. Duncan Hunter's opponent, Ammar Campa-Najjar, spoke out Tuesday about the indictment against the congressman. “Now is the time to put country over party,” Campa said in a brief video posted on YouTube. Campa continued by adding that Hunter "is in it for himself." Later Wednesday, Campa called on Hunter to step down. Tuesday, Hunter and his wife Margaret were indicted by a federal grand jury in San Diego on suspicion of using 0,000 worth of campaign funds to pay for vacations and personal expenses. RELATED: San Diego Congressman Duncan Hunter addresses federal indictment in 10News interviewWatch Campa's full message in the player below:The indictment includes instances from 2009 through 2016. The couple is also accused of filing false campaign finance records with the Federal Election Commission. RELATED: San Diego Congressman Duncan Hunter and wife indicted for campaign fund misuseAccording to an affidavit, hunter allegedly spent the money on vacations, dental work, tuition, movie tickets, video games and home utilities, among other things. The affidavit goes on to claim that the Hunters mischaracterized the purchases in FEC filings as things such as campaign travel, dinner with volunteers or campaign contributors, toy drives and teacher/parent events.  Hunter and Campa will face off in November. In the June Primary, Hunter finished with 49 percent of the vote with Campa gaining 16 percent. Political Consultant Laura Fink told 10News Tuesday night that a more recent generic ballot showed the to candidates "neck-and-neck."
