A high school teacher from San Diego and her students are up for an Academy Award, KABC reports. They’re all taboo subjects in the United States, periods, menstruation and bleeding. But a group of high school students and their teacher, Melissa Berton, are trying to change that. Berton is originally from San Diego and graduated from Patrick Henry High School. Now, she's a producer on “Period. End of Sentence” and an English teacher at Oakwood High School in Los Angeles. “I think it has been a profound experience from start to finish,” Berton said. In 2013, she advised a group of students who were selected as United Nations delegates to advocate for women and girls. That’s when their journey to normalize menstruation began. “Who better to sort of be the voice for that than high school young women who are in that moment,” Berton said. Originally, the short documentary was a marketing tool for their bigger vision. A non-profit they created called Pad Project. Their mission was to get a machine that creates biodegradable pads to a rural village in India. “We never thought it would be an Oscar nominated film but the idea was always, if we could just make an educational film, to raise awareness about this issue, then that would be the jewel in the crown of our non-profit”The students were in charge of fundraising and creating the non-profit as well as bringing the documentary to life. Seven executive producers on the project are either in college or grad school and several associate producers are in high school. They put the documentary through the film festival circuit and received award after award and an Academy Award nomination. The students along with Berton say that their biggest achievement of all was normalizing periods for women around the world. “I think the students have felt different responses from their classmates and have felt a little less shy about something that maybe we don't need to feel so shy about,” Berton said. 1972

A federal judge has reportedly thrown out President Trump’s latest effort to block the Manhattan district attorney from subpoenaing his financial records, according to multiple outlets.President Trump’s lawyers made their final arguments to block the prosecutor from getting his tax records on August 10. U.S. District Judge Victor Marrero issued his ruling Thursday.The same judge refused to throw out the subpoena last year. Then this summer, the U.S. Supreme Court essentially upheld his decision when they returned the case to the lower level, saying Trump’s lawyers were entitled to challenge the subpoena in the same manner as anyone else.District Attorney Cyrus Vance says his investigation into Trump’s business practices is entitled to extensive records to aid a “complex financial investigation” and they cited in their papers public reports of “extensive and protracted criminal conduct at the Trump Organization.” He is seeking eight years of Trump’s personal and business tax returns. 1005

A former teacher at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional School near Shamokin, Pa. was fired last week after she told the principal she is pregnant and not married.Naiad Reich and her boyfriend Matt Graboski are expecting their first child together. It's supposed to be a happy time for the couple who live near Shamokin. Instead, Reich was fired from her teaching job at a Catholic school because the couple is not married.Reich and Graboski are expecting their first child next summer."I'm extremely excited," Graboski said. "It's one of the most rewarding things you can possibly go through."Recently, that excitement has been overshadowed. For the past two years, Reich was a high school teacher at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional School, a Catholic school near Shamokin.Last week, she told the principal she was pregnant."It was very apparent that she was not happy with the circumstances. Of course, her problem was Catholic morals," said Reich.She said the principal's concern was that the couple are not married. The Diocese of Harrisburg had questions."If there's no eventual plan in the near future to get married, it was either that or I had to be let go," Reich said.Reich didn't want to be fired and understands the Catholic morality code. The couple also wants to get married on their own terms. Reich lost her job last Friday.A spokesperson for the diocese said, "The Diocese of Harrisburg is unable to comment on personnel matters. However, as outlined in our policies, every professional employee agrees to follow the teachings, doctrine, and laws of the Catholic Church as part of the hiring process."Despite all of that, Reich and Graboski have no ill will towards Our Lady of Lourdes Regional School or the Diocese of Harrisburg."This is their beliefs and their moral code and what they live by and I understand that. Though I don't agree with it, I understand," Reich said.Many parents agree with Reich."I get their reasoning behind it and why they have to, but I don't agree with it. I don't think it was very nice to do," said Ashley Stroh of Coal Township."This teacher is not even Catholic. I don't care if she would have been, but it's still wrong for her to lose her job," said Geri Albertini of Shamokin.Reich says, above all else, she misses her students. A Long Island man is facing charges after striking protesters with his vehicle Monday evening at a Black Lives Matter march, police in Suffolk County said.Authorities said Anthony Cambareri, 36, was driving his Toyota RAV4 westbound on Broadway in Huntington Station when he struck two protesters standing in the roadway around 6:45 p.m.The two pedestrians were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.Police said Cambareri fled the scene but was caught moments later.Facebook user Matthew Showtyme posted video on Facebook reportedly of the driver stopped just after the incident.Warning: The below video contains language some readers may find offensive. Cambareri was not injured and his vehicle was impounded for a safety check, police said.Suffolk County police said the Coram man was arrested on third-degree assault charges and issued a desk appearance ticket. A group of firefighters were able to rescue ducklings trapped in a storm well in Gilbert last last month.Video from the rescue shows the mama duck keeping a close eye on the firefighters. At the end of the video, you can see the family walking away to carry on with the day.  308
