VERO BEACH, Fla. -- For Crystal Smith, the midday heat in Florida isn't her biggest challenge. Living in a shelter, the single mom is trying to get back on her feet.She was one of the first people working at the "Dignity Food Truck" in Vero Beach."I've just been making food, certain dishes, just learning. (The organizers) give you on the job training and actually give you a job," said Smith.Set up by the Source, a Christian Ministry outreach in Vero Beach, it is a new program for the homeless and unemployed."What our students lack is real-time training in front of real customers. That's what Dignity Food Truck gives them. It gives them real exposure in real-time, made-to-order food," said Anthony Zorbaugh, the executive director of the Source.Chef Henry Restrepo said this is his most important mission in two decades of cooking."We train them for the culinary so they can get their life back," said Restrepo.Money raised goes back into the program.The truck was made possible by a 0,000 grant from the philanthropic group Impact 100."We love the mission. We love the project itself. It fulfills a multitude of needs," said Kristin Rohr with Impact 100.It fills an immediate need for Smith while giving her hope for the future."I would like my own business eventually," said Smith.The Food Truck will be parked at Tropical Scooters along U.S. 1 in Vero Beach on Mondays and Tuesdays.It will be at United Against Poverty Wednesdays and Route 60 Hyundai on Fridays. USA Gymnastics CEO Kerry Perry apologized Wednesday for the "horrific acts" of Larry Nassar at a congressional hearing examining the Olympic community's role in sex abuse scandals."I want to apologize to all who were harmed by the horrific acts of Larry Nassar," Perry said.She said she was "appalled and sickened by the despicable crimes" of Nassar and said USA Gymnastics has taken a new course over the last five months to protect athletes.Perry was appointed to take over USA Gymnastics late last year. She replaced Steve Penny, who resigned in March 2017 amid backlash over the organization's handling of sexual abuse claims, including against Nassar.Nassar, the former USA Gymnastics doctor and Michigan State University team physician, admitted in a Michigan court that he had used his influence and position as a trusted medical professional to sexually abuse young girls and women over two decades.Several of the hundreds of women abused by Nassar, including gold medal gymnast Aly Raisman, have said USA Gymnastics is responsible for not doing more to stop the years of abuse. Two childcare workers have turned themselves into Florida police custody after a video surfaced of them berating, taunting and throwing a backpack at an 8-year-old child with autism.On Sept. 1, Winter Haven PD found out about a Snapchat video showing 26-year-old Kaderrica Smith and then 19-year-old Alexis Henderson taunting, aggravating, yelling at and tripping a student at Our Children's Academy.The 8-year-old is seen and heard in the video crying and hiding underneath a table while Henderson and Smith continue to taunt him.At one point the child tries to run towards one of the workers when she grabs his arms and sweeps his legs out from under him causing him to fall.The video lasts about three minutes and at one point shows one of the workers throwing a backpack at the child, hitting him in the face."There has to be an accountability measure for folks," said Winter Haven Police Chief Charlie Bird. "Especially when they're supposed to be the professionals. They get hired as the professionals, they're being paid as the professionals."In initial interviews, the two said they felt they were acting appropriately and did nothing wrong. Henderson and Smith just received their certification for childcare last month. "Those aren't methods that you can even begin to defend as being used to defuse a situation with an autistic child," said Bird. They were each immediately fired by the faculty and DCF placed a hold on their certifications.The child was interviewed by a DCF Child Protection Team member on Sept. 15 and it was determined the acts were criminal.Police were initially unable to locate the two, thus giving reason to issue a warrant.  1713
