BEIJING, March 20 (Xinhua) -- China and Japan should strengthen cooperation to deal with the financial crisis, said Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo on Friday.     "China is willing to work with Japan to properly handle sensitive issues in bilateral relations and consolidate our political foundations," said Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.     In a meeting with Japanese Defense Minister Hamada Yasukazu, Wu said China-Japan relations were improving and cooperation in various fields have expanded. If the signs of recovery could appear in the second half of this year or in this summer, then the world could gradually walk out of this financial crisis.     In another report, the IMF said on Thursday that the world economy is expected to contract in 2009 for the first time in 60 years as advanced economies will shrink sharply.     Global activity will contract by 0.5 to 1 percent on an annual average basis, the first such fall in 60 years, the IMF said in an analysis provided to the Group of 20 (G20) industrialized and emerging market economies.     Advanced economies will suffer deep recessions in 2009, while the United States will contract 2.6 percent, the assessment said.     Capital injection into IMF at G20     Responding to the question of capital injection into the IMF at the upcoming G20 summit in London, Portugal said the IMF had enough resources to manage the problems the world economy is facing now.     From the start of economic crisis, our credit capability is 250 billion U.S. dollars, among which we have used 50 billion dollars, so we still have 200 billion dollars left, said Portugal, adding that we hope to prepare for the worst to come, if more countries need our financial support. So far, we have got some commitments on capital injection from some countries.     He said that Japan is the first country to make such commitment. The IMF has signed the agreement with Japan, which has pledged to add 100 billion U.S. dollars to IMF's funds. We can lend the money out, said Portugal.     Ahead of the G20 summit, the United States is calling for trebling of the IMF's resources to help countries facing financial and economic problems.     In preparation for the summit, finance ministers and central bankers from the G20 agreed last weekend to boost the IMF's funding capacity, but gave no figures.

BEIJING, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- China's state assets watchdog will closely watch over projects implemented by state-owned enterprises(SOEs) in the country's massive stimulus package to prevent corruption, an official said here Sunday.     The State-owned Assets Supervision and Management Commission (SASAC) will strictly look into the progress and fund use of projects by SOEs directly under the central government, said the SASAC director Li Rongrong.     Many projects are estimated to see over tens of millions of yuan put in, making it a more important task to fend off corruption, he said at an SOE meeting on disciplinary inspection work.     China unveiled a stimulus package with a total investment of 4 trillion yuan (586 billion U.S. dollars) in November to boost domestic demand and offset the world economic slowdown.     Of the total, 100 billion yuan had been allocated by the central government by the end of last year.     Li said inspectors will particularly focus on projects in such sectors as power grids, telecommunications, transportation, equipment, construction and metallurgy.     The SASAC will also check whether the projects cause environmental hazards, consume too much energy and resources or result in excessive capacity, said Li.     A total of 4,960 Chinese officials above the county level were punished in a year ending November 2008, data show. They were involved in corruption and commercial bribes, hurting people's interests.

DAKAR, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao held talks with his Senegalese counterpart Abdoulaye Wade in Dakar on Friday to discuss promotion of friendly and cooperative ties between China and the West African nation.     Hu said the bilateral relations have made progress in various fields since the resumption of diplomatic ties in 2005, and facts have proved that the China-Senegal friendship is in the fundamental interests of both nations and will have a promising future.     To cement bilateral cooperation and seek more tangible benefits for the two peoples, Hu proposed both nations keep exchange of high-level visits and deepen political trust, and increase communications and cooperation between the two governments, legislatures, ruling parties and local authorities so as to lay a solid political foundation for bilateral ties.     On the economic front, Hu suggested establishing a bilateral economic and trade steering committee to plan and monitor trade cooperation.     China would like to facilitate Senegalese corporations' efforts to do business in and expand their exports to China, and the Chinese government will encourage Chinese businesses and the China-Africa Development Fund to cooperate with Senegalese businesses, Hu said. The first-ever visit by a Chinese president was warmly welcomed by local people, with the streets from the airport to downtown Dakar being lined up with Chinese and Senegalese flags and welcoming crowds.
