(CNS) - A 53-year-old Fallbrook man was fatally struck by a car while attempting to cross a street in Fallbrook, authorities reported Monday.A 58-year-old man was driving a Toyota Camry northbound on South Mission Road about 12:15 a.m. Sunday when the victim ran westbound across the northbound lanes near Peppertree Lane and was struck by the sedan, California Highway Patrol Officer Mark Latulippe said.The pedestrian was taken to Temecula Valley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the officer said. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- San Diego neighborhoods are getting a step ahead of crime. One Escondido HOA is the latest to install license plate reader cameras. Drivers entering the Kent Ranch HOA in Escondido are now greeted by high-tech license plate readers. According to the creators of the tech, the cameras help police solve an average of two to three cases a day nationwide. The cameras don’t have facial recognition, only the ability to identify the car. Critics of the technology worry the data could be abused and is an invasion of privacy. The HOA did hear from some residents about privacy concerns, but believed public safety outweighed the concerns. Residents can request their vehicle not be captured by the cameras. 739

FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) -- Firefighters have stopped the forward rate of spread after a fire, dubbed the Fallsbrea Fire, sparked in Fallbrook Sunday afternoon. “Too many times, man” Chris Beucler sighed. He could not believe he was witnessing yet another wildfire approaching his home. "I looked out the window, and just beyond our lots down here I see a huge flame up in the air,” Beucler said. Early Sunday afternoon, Beucler and his wife were putting up artwork in his home, when the flickers brought back memories. It seemed like just yesterday, he experienced the Lilac Fire, which destroyed many of his neighbor's houses. The Lilac Fire started on December 7, 2017. The 4,100-acre blaze destroyed 157 and damaged 64 structures. "I've been up here 16 years, and this is probably the sixth time these things have happened. So it's just high alert all the time,” Beucler said. Cal Fire and North County Fire responded to the scene of the Fallbrea fire that sparked near Highway 76 and Ramona Drive around 12:30 p.m. When they arrived, the fire was only about a half-acre. But it quickly spread up the slope to about five acres. While the region is under a Red Flag warning, flames spread before gusts took over North County, Cal Fire said. "Make no mistake about it, while we are expecting a red flag condition to take hold of the county, we are not under those conditions as we speak,” Cal Fire San Diego Captain, Issac Sanchez said. “This was absolutely slope and fuel driven. Mostly burning in grass, which burns very quickly and very hot.”Firefighters are expecting conditions to worsen and to work overtime. But for now, veteran wildfire survivor Beucler is relieved. The walking trail that he created six years ago and preps twice a year saved his home once again. "We got a natural firebreak that we built for a trail to go around our house, and they're saying that's what saved our part,” Beucler said. According to Cal Fire, several structures were threatened, but the forward rate of spread has been stopped. The fire was 100 percent contained by about 4 p.m. The cause is under investigation.  2216

(KGTV) - A young San Diego security officer says she faced retaliation after reporting sexual harassment to her employer, Escondido’s Palomar Medical Center.She spoke exclusively with 10News about her experience. The hospital will not discuss the details with 10News, but reports it takes matters like this seriously.The woman and her attorneys are now suing the hospital and the supervisor who she accused of sexual misconduct.10News was asked to withhold the identity of the woman who filed the sexual harassment claim.In a recent emotional interview, she said, “I'm helping my dad with my sister so if I lose my job [I] don't see how I’ll be able to financially support my family.”Attorney Anna Yum with Gilleon Law Firm is representing the woman. Yum told us, “Every worst nightmare that she could have anticipated [has] happened.”Yum said the woman was working as a security officer at Palomar Medical Center when her supervisor kissed her, but it was not welcomed.Yum added that the supervisor is a former police officer who is nearly twice her age. Yum’s client told us, “He said, ‘Just please don't say anything. I’ll be sure that you get that lead position that you applied for.’”The woman explained that she agreed and told him, “I won't say anything,” and, “Just, please. I want to leave.”She said she did not report it at the time because she was concerned about retaliation. She was promoted, but said he continued to make her uncomfortable with his comments and would hug her on several occasions.Due to her anxiety and stress, the lawsuit reports she took a medical leave of absence. Late last year she claimed he tried to kiss her again.“He told me, ‘If you do go to HR, I'll make sure you lose your job.’ Now that I’m experiencing all this with HR, it's like surreal,” she added.She reported the harassment in a letter to HR on February 15th, 2018, she told us. Yet she said it wasn’t until almost two weeks later that HR opened an investigation into the matter.By that time, she hired Yum as her lawyer and wanted Yum present at her meetings with HR. However, Yum claims that HR refused to let her have an attorney present for the meetings.HR reportedly wrote to her on March 27th, 2018, reiterating that the hospital “would have to conduct the investigation without [her] input, which is obviously not preferred.”According to Yum, “They said, ‘Well, we couldn't corroborate because [the client] refused to cooperate with us,’ which is the furthest thing from the truth.” The letter goes on to explain that since she refused to do an interview without her attorneys, HR, “…concluded the investigation without [her] input."Yum says her client was then notified that she was getting demoted under the false pretense that it was her client's idea to step down, not the hospital's idea.Yum says that continued retaliation unfolded. Her client tells 10News that on March 30th, 2018, she received a letter from HR placing her on immediate investigatory leave so the hospital could “review an alleged security incident” from three days earlier while she was “on duty as the lead security officer”.Yum has called it a sham investigation. She says her client knows nothing about a security incident that happened on her watch.“This is so classic. This is exactly why women don't want to come forward,” Yum told us. Yum and her client are now suing the hospital for sexual harassment and retaliation, among other complaints.They're also suing the accused harasser, who we are not naming, as he has not been charged with a crime. Both he and the hospital declined our interview requests.A statement from Palomar Medical Center reads, “Although Palomar Health cannot comment on pending legal matters, please be assured that we take all complaints of discrimination in the workplace seriously, including the complaint at issue. We are also not at liberty to discuss any of the details of our investigations into workplace misconduct due to the privacy rights of the employees involved.”“They don't want to have anything to do with me, I feel. I feel like they've already chosen their side and their truth,” Yum’s client told us. She has since accepted a security position at another San Diego hospital, but says it’s a pay cut from what she was making at Palomar Medical Center. 4324

ESCONDIDO, Calif., (KGTV) -- Community members are coming to the realization that a hate crime occurred in their neighborhood. Many came to witness the damage. 10News spoke to a man who brought his children to the arson scene saying this was a teachable moment.It was a real-life lesson that Yusef Miller never thought he would teach his sons Naeem and Dario at their home mosque. Exactly one week ago, Miller led an interfaith prayer vigil in Escondido's Maple Street Plaza, after a gunman killed 50 Muslims at two New Zealand mosques in a terror attack. But that was 6,900 miles away. The fire was steps from his home. "We didn't anticipate that this would happen here, and so soon after our prayer vigil," Miller said. Escondido Police said what happened early Sunday morning was a targeted arson. The perpetrator left graffiti, referencing the New Zealand attacks. This act of terrorism already had Escondido Police on high alert."Immediately following the shooting at the New Zealand mosque, and informed the folks here locally, and said we will be doing extra patrols," Lt. Chris Lick of the Escondido Police Department said. But clearly, it was not enough. Sunday morning at around 3:00, someone set fire to the side wall of the Islamic Center of Escondido. Police said five people were sleeping inside when the fire started. But mosque members were immediately able to extinguish the flames before fire crews arrived. No one was hurt."We thought we were pretty relaxed, even though we were vigilant. But now that this happened here, we are hyper-vigilant now. This can happen anywhere to anyone," Miller said. "Whoever did this, they meant business. This wasn't just a threat. They had the tools to actually harm people and take lives."His 12-year-old son, Naeem looked at the damage with a blank stare. "It's like you can't be safe anywhere," Naeem Miller said. It was a life lesson Miller wished he never had to teach. But it was an important one on reality."So guys, remember," he said to his sons. "Be safe when you're walking around here. There are people up to no good. But there are a lot of people out here doing good too. Ok? So don't be too nervous walking around here, but still be aware. We're going to be Muslim no matter what. Muslim forever. But be safe.
