When you step inside a restaurant in eastern Idaho, it’s no secret which menu item is a favorite one."I don’t know what other kind of potatoes we would have if we didn’t have Idaho potatoes," said FaDale Fisher, who works at Big Jud's in Ashton, Idaho.The restaurant is feeling life again in a state that produces more potatoes than any other.“Now, we’re almost back to full force, even though we are still limited on tables, business is still really well," she said.Idaho potatoes are also an important ingredient at Grandpa's Southern BBQ in Idaho Falls.Owner Lloyd Westbrook says take-out orders have helped his restaurant thrive this year. He's been in business since 1995.“You will find hospitality in restaurants out West, but it’s just not quite southern hospitality," he said.While the sight of spirited kitchens could give hope the food industry is beginning to rebound, for some of the potato farmers who work close by in this state, that hope feels very far away.“It’s unclear if we’re even going to be able to stay in business," said Doug Hess.Hess' family has farmed his land since the 1800s.“When you look around, you realize you’re actually farming with not your equity but your grandfather's, your father's equity," Hess said.Hess’ specialty is seed potatoes. They are grown free of virus and genetic defects.He sells to commercial farmers, who use the seed potatoes to grow the ones you eventually eat.Hess says the pandemic caused a food-chain reaction that hurt his business. When restaurants closed, the distributors that deliver potatoes to kitchens pulled back on buying from commercial growers, and those growers bought less of his already grown crop."We were anticipating a bag of a potatoes," Hess said. "Click of a switch if you could get rid of it for ."He was left with a pile of potatoes, and he donated about a quarter of his crop.He's now planted significantly less as COVID-19 cases rise.The federal government has stepped in to help the potato industry, but Hess says the struggles of he and his fellow farmers could last long after the pandemic."It could be three or four years out before this thing stabilizes," he said.For this lifelong farmer, it's a generational pressure.“Every time I sit at the table and I look at my sons thinking, ‘Will I be able to pass this on as my father passed on to me?’” Hess said. 2361

When Mahdi Hashemian was looking for a bicycle for his 7-year-old daughter Zeynab last week, the Cambridge, Massachusetts, resident decided to skip his local cycle shops in favor of a Black-owned one a few miles away in Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood.At Spokehouse, a bike shop with “Black Lives Matter” painted in large bold letters outside, the pair picked out a simple, white-colored model and had training wheels and a white basket for its handlebars installed.Hashemian, who is set to earn his doctorate from MIT, said he’s been reminded in recent weeks of the outpouring of support he felt from the campus community when President Donald Trump imposed a ban on travelers from Muslim majority countries in 2017, including his native Iran.“It seems small,” he said of his bike purchase, “but a little show of support can mean a lot.”As the May killing of George Floyd by a white police officer in Minneapolis has fueled a worldwide outcry against racism and police brutality, many on social media are encouraging people to spend their money at Black-owned businesses. Black-owned bookstores have struggled to keep up with a surge in orders, many of them for a handful of sold-out titles on race relations.In Boston, the owners of Frugal Bookstore, the city’s only Black-owned bookshop, say customers are already seeking to cancel orders and complaining about delays and poor customer service. The Roxbury shop, which raised more than ,000 through an earlier social media campaign to help it weather the economic downturn, said in a note to customers that went viral last week that 75% of the more than 20,000 purchases it’s received are for the same 10 books.At Spokehouse, the Boston bike shop, owner Noah Hicks hopes the interest isn’t a passing fad and that it leads to more concrete efforts to address the challenges facing Black entrepreneurs, including access to capital.Hicks said his nearly five-year-old shop’s sales have tripled this month, compared to last June, in part because bike shops are enjoying brisk business during the pandemic .The shop also received about ,000 in donations after it was robbed during last month’s unrest, though Hicks ended up donating about half to efforts benefiting the local Black community, including covering the costs for a “Ride for Black Lives,” a cycling rally in Boston this past weekend.“People being intentional about their economic purchases is refreshing,” he said. ”But we also want them to help tear down the systems that make it hard for us, not just spend their dollars with us.” 5660

  

With Congress debating the next economic relief package, American workers are set to lose additional unemployment money at the end of the week.The crisis has affected all sorts of workers, but one particular group is less likely to be able to recover – the older workforce.AARP found 30% of older workers lost jobs or income because of COVID-19.Research from the Great Recession found it takes older Americans twice as long to get back into the workforce. If they do, they almost always never end up making the money they used to.AARP is also concerned businesses might be reluctant to hire older workers because of the increased risk to the virus.“There’s now five generations for the first time ever in the workforce, so having that diverse age will actually help in bringing products and services to the market that appeal to a wide range of age of people,” said Susan Weinstock, VP of Financial Resilience at AARP.Prior to the pandemic, businesses were looking to recruit older workers because of their unique soft skills: being empathetic, calm under pressure, and a good listener.Multigenerational workforces tend to be more efficient, productive and have fewer errors and absenteeism.“Think about something that happened at work when you are 25 and then when you are 55 and something similar happens you have some perspective you can bring,” said Weinstock.AARP has resources specific for older workers affected by the pandemic, including a jobs board with a lot of remote work for those concerned about going to work in person. 1543
