WATCH FULL INVESTIGATIVE REPORT, TONIGHT ON 10NEWS at 6PMSAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A North County couple said they paid a company thousands of dollars to put in a new kitchen, but that company never finished the job.Months after signing the contract, they learned the guy in charge was the subject of multiple Team 10 investigations and had his license revoked by the Contractors State License Board.“Maybe I was just naive, but it was an eye-opener,” said homeowner Mark.Mark asked 10News not to use his last name.He said while he and his wife were out of town a leak under the sink flooded their kitchen.The couple hired a mitigation company to take care of the damage but needed a restoration company to build it back up.They came across Mark Morningstar, who came highly recommended by a user on the website Nextdoor."One of the recommendations we got was through Maria, and Maria posed as a satisfied client,” Mark said. “She said, 'Hey, I know this person Marc Morningstar, he can do cabinet work, and he can do granite work. He can do basically everything.'"Maria Meeuwisse was the listed author of Mark's recommendation, she is also the license holder for Quality Painting SoCal.According to customers who spoke with Team 10, this is the same company where Morningstar works.State records show the license was issued in August 2018 for a painting and decorating contractor.Team 10 found postings on NextDoor from someone with the same name as Meeuwisse - talking up Morningstar and the company.Thinking the reviews were real, Mark and Diana said they hired Quality Painting SoCal to fix their kitchen."He (Morningstar) said ya I can do all this quote-unquote,” Mark said. “I can act as your quarterback and take care of everything for you.”Mark said Morningstar promised it would take about two weeks for the new kitchen and cost around ,000.So that's what Mark and Diana authorized on their credit card.Mark said Morningstar brought in contractors to do the work, but things quickly went south.They said the granite was installed incorrectly, cabinets weren't lining up, and eventually, crews stopped showing up, leaving Morningstar to do it himself."There would be a week, two weeks where he wouldn't show up, and the weeks he did show up, he would show up for a day, and during that day he would show up for a few hours, and it was clear he didn't know what he was doing,” Mark said.Mark said months after Morningstar started the job, the kitchen wasn't done and Morningstar stopped showing up."We googled Marc (Morningstar), and the investigative news came up immediately -- hit number one,” he said. “We watched the video and were like, "Oh my god, that's that guy.'”A 2017 Team 10 investigation exposed Morningstar's criminal business practices. Several former customers complained he took their money but never finished installing the fake grass. Team 10 also learned Morningstar had done some of the work after his contractor's license was suspended. According to a spokesman for the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB), when a license is suspended, no contracts can be signed, no money can be paid, and no work can be done.Morningstar was also accused of using another contractor's license number.The CSLB eventually revoked Morningstar’s license.Court records show in September 2018, Morningstar pleaded guilty to diversion of construction funds, grand theft of personal property and improper home improvement contract procedure.Team 10 went to the listed address for Quality Painting SoCal to ask Morningstar about Mark and Diana's complaints.A woman who identified herself as Maria Meeuwisse, the company’s license holder, answered the door and said Morningstar wasn’t there.Team 10 investigator Adam Racusin told Meeuwisse customers are saying Morningstar is doing work without a contractor's license.“Which is not true and we’ve been talking with the CSLB about that,” she said.While asking Meeuwisse questions, a man who looked like Morningstar came in through a back entrance.Team 10 investigator Adam Racusin tried to talk to the man, but Meeuwisse closed the door.On Tuesday, the Contractors State License Board added disclosures to Quality Painting SoCal’s license. A disclosure means the CSLB has an open investigation against the company and has disclosed on its website that it believes there is evidence of a probable violation that would lead to either a suspension of revocation of the company’s contracting license and/or criminal prosecution. CSLB’s investigation is open. There are no criminal charges at this time.The two violations CSLB is investigating are a departure from trade standards or specs and willful or fraudulent act.On Wednesday a spokesperson for the CSLB told Team 10 the company notified state officials it plans to shut down and cancel Quality Painting SoCal's license.Mark and Diana said since they paid Morningstar on their credit card, they were able to dispute the charges with the credit card company.While they were able to get their money back, they said they had to pay someone else to re-do most of the work. 5092

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Polls are beginning to close in parts of the U.S. and some Election Day results are coming in.The first states to close at least a portion of their polls are Indiana and Kentucky, at 6 p.m. ET. Those races won’t tell us much, because they’re largely Republican strongholds.Some of the first key states to close their polls are Georgia and Florida at 7 p.m. ET. Not all counties in the Sunshine State will close then, but a good chunk will start reporting around that time. Georgia is a swing state this year, so keep your eyes on the suburbs of Atlanta.At 7:30 p.m. ET, North Carolina and Ohio will close their polls. Ohio is expected to report results right away and a projection in the state is possible on election night. As for North Carolina, the state has ordered some polling locations to stay open longer than 7:30, so don’t expect results from there until after 8 p.m. at least.At 8 p.m. ET, polls will close in Texas, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Although, it’s very unlikely, we will know the results from the last two. State laws prohibit early processing of ballots.At 9 p.m. ET, Arizona, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Nebraska will close polls. It’s the same story in Wayne County, Michigan, where Detroit is, where there were over 76,000 fewer votes in 2016. If that county breaks voting records, it could be a good night for Democrats. It’s a similar story tonight in Milwaukee County.Again, the key tonight will be patience. Some states will take a while to count votes this election night. Election officials from coast to coast are telling their workers not to worry about being fast, but to worry about being right.The Senate racesAs the first presidential results gradually come in, don’t forget to keep an eye on the U.S. Senate results as well. After all, whoever wins the presidency will need Congress to help pass their agenda.As a reminder, currently there are 53 Republican senators and 47 Democratic senators. There is a total of 35 Senate races this year. Republicans think they can pick a seat up in Alabama, while Democrats think they are in good position to pick up Arizona, Colorado, North Carolina and Maine.Remember, the Senate confirms judges, helps pass bills and confirms cabinet positions.The presidential raceAs for the race for the White House, one state to keep an eye on is Wisconsin, with 10 electoral college votes. WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The intersection of a global pandemic and a national opioid crisis is a place Alvin Dutruch knows well.“This kind of came out of nowhere,” he said.Dutruch is a recovering opioid addict who spent time in prison in Louisiana, but now he works to coach others dealing with addiction.“I have 33 months of clean time, which is the longest period clean time that I've had in the last 15 years,” he said.However, he added that it’s the past six months that have been some of the toughest of his recovery.“The only thing I'm doing is I'm just secluded here and I'm in my head,” Dutruch said. “And that is the worst thing that a recovering addict can do is get in their own head because in all this self-doubt starts coming around.”It’s a seclusion stemming from something we saw first-hand this summer in Vermont: the pandemic forcing recovery treatment centers to close their doors.“The pandemic hit and, of course, everything just went, everyone just retreated to their homes,” Gary de Carolis, director of the Turning Point Center of Chittenden County, Vermont, told us in July.Experts say that isolation is likely leading to more opioid overdoses.The full picture of 2020 is still unfolding, but according to the Association of American Medical Colleges and national lab service Millennium Health, which recently analyzed a half-million drug tests taken during the pandemic from March to May, there was an increase of 32% in non-prescribed fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, found in those tests.Overall, drug overdoses increased 18% during that same time.The numbers don’t surprise Dutruch.“You didn't take a self-help class or life-skills class to ever get you prepared for a pandemic that is going to cut off all of your recovery resources to you,” he said.Though he admits it’s not perfect, Dutruch said telehealth and virtual meetings can help, anything to give someone in recovery a connection to someone else. We know virtual learning is mentally hard on kids, but what about physically? If your child is having persistent neck or back pain, it might be related to poor posture and poor body positioning.At some point during the pandemic, most children across the country were doing some sort of computer-assisted learning. At Children's Hospital of Orange County in Southern California, pediatric physical therapist Ruchi Bagrodia covers posture and seating with kids who are of age.There are many things they should be doing.“I always encourage them, a child, to sit at a dining or office table, a chair with a seat back. Their back should be supported,” Bagrodia said.There are lots of things they shouldn't do.“Never sitting on the floor, never sitting in bed, never sitting on the couch,” Bagrodia said. “For therapy appointments or learning, it promotes poor posture if you’re in a squishy bean bag chair or couch. You’re never going to sit up well if you’re there for a couple hours. You’ll develop all sorts of kinks and achiness in the neck, the shoulder, the back.”Many Americans are at home, and these days, many are in chairs a lot. If you're using a device, it matters where you put it. “The level of the tablet, the height of it matters,” said Bagrodia. “We want it arm’s-lengths away and the top of the screen should be just below your eye level. If you’re on the floor and your tablet is on your lap, you’re going to be looking down at your lap and that can develop shoulder neck pain, achiness.”When asked about the long-term implications of persistent bad posture, Bagrodia said, “Poor posture is something is that is developed in a 6- or 7-year-old by the time they’re 20, maybe they do have serious back pain or issues.”While you're repositioning your children, doctors say, pay attention to their mental health too.“Across all different mental health issues, we’re seeing a marked increase, everything in kids. We’re not just talking one age range, we’re talking young childhood all the way through late teenagers,” says Dr. Christopher Min, a pediatric psychologist.Dr. Min says kids need the structure, stability and routine that school provides, and that is what's missing for a lot of kids.“Kids' bodies and brains do really well, “ Dr. Min said. “We’re creatures of habit, when they have that regularity, it’s really great for their brains.”Dr. Min says try to provide some sort of routine and make sure you incorporate enough physical activity, such as a daily family walk. And he says there are signs when things are not going well for children.“For kids, a sign of some mental health difficulties is irritability (which) is a symptom of anxiety and depression in kids,” Dr. Min said.He recommends to pay attention to sleeping and eating habits. While you can't do everything, you can definitely make sure children are consistently physically comfortable while learning at home. That doesn't mean you need a fancy or expensive desk.“If the chair is too high and their feet is hanging off, then put a box or laundry basket underneath their feet so they’re supported. If the laptop is really low, then put books or something under the laptop to lift it up, put a cushion if the chair is too big, put a pillow, or roll up a sweatshirt and tuck it under the low back for some support,” says Bagrodia.At the same time, if you are sitting for long periods of time, check your positioning as well, since it appears the work from home life won't be sitting anytime soon. 3488
