SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man from El Salvador has been granted asylum in the United States after having been sent back to Mexico to await his trial.According to his attorney, Narciso Cruz, the man is only the second person to receive asylum who had been sent back to Mexico due to the Trump administration’s Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP.)“This individual is a bit of a rarity,” said Cruz, referring to his client’s success in court.But his story is not a rarity.Marcos fled violence in El Salvador and did no want to use his full name for this story, still fearing the gang he fled in El Salvador.“They’re a terrorist group,” said Marcos.He became targeted earlier this year after he tried to help his cousin who was being recruited by the gang. After he interfered, he started receiving death threats.“They will kill you and your entire family,” he said.He traveled to the United States, crossing the border on June 25 somewhere near Tecate.He said he wandered in the desert for five days before he was eventually picked up by Border Patrol agents and taken to a holding facility. Within a day he said he was sent back across the border to Mexico where he would wait for his case to be heard.The Trump Administration implemented the MPP in January. Despite some pushback from the courts, the policy, also called “remain in Mexico,” was allowed to go forward.As of September 1, the U.S government has sent 42,000 asylum seekers to Mexico, according to the Department of Homeland Security.As for Marcos, his case is not officially done yet. The government reserved its right to appeal the court’s decision. They have until October 25 to file an appeal. 1659

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego family wants to warn other about daytime burglars who may be posing as door-to-door salespeople.The Alvarado family just moved to a home in Allied Gardens. It is a safe neighborhood, but they noticed there are a lot of solicitors.Tuesday afternoon they were burglarized by a couple of young men wearing matching outfits.“I left the house for 25 minutes to pick up my daughters from school," Vanessa Alvarado said. "When I was coming down the street I noticed two young men walking quickly down the street, from my driveway, carrying both my guitars."Her daughters were also in the car as they drove up to their home, and burglars.“They looked up and saw me. They knew who I was,” Alvarado said. "They knew my car and they just sped down the street, made a sharp right turn."One of her daughters noticed the young men’s matching clothes.“I think they looked like salesmen. I noticed one of the had a binder in his hands with several things on top, which turned out to be my personal belongings,” Alvarado said.The home was locked at the time of the burglary.The thieves went into the backyard and broke in through a bedroom window, which was open a few inches but had a stopper device on it aimed to prevent anyone from opening the window further.Regardless, the thieves pried off the screen, and pushed the window open.The men made off with numerous items, including guitars, Kindles and jewelry. They left no fingerprints.“I went from trying to be strong for my daughters to realizing my wedding rings were gone and at that point, my heart just shattered into a million pieces,” Alvarado said.Now, the family is getting security cameras and they have dowels in the windows so they can't be opened.  1744

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Red Flag warning has been issued for parts of San Diego County ahead of a Santa Ana wind event expected to move in Thursday. The red flag warning goes into effect from 5 a.m. Thursday to 5 p.m. Friday for San Diego County’s inland valleys and mountains, the National Weather Service said. East to northeast winds 25 to 35 miles per hour with gusts up to 50 miles per hour are forecast. Winds will be the strongest below the Cajon Pass and in the Santa Ana Mountains, according to the agency. Lowest daytime humidity will reach 5 to 10 percent with poor overnight recovery. Greater humidity recovery will move in Sunday as onshore flow strengthens. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man attempting to kill weeds set his house on fire in San Diego Sunday, according to firefighters.The fire happened just before 11 a.m. on the 4500 block of Clairemont Avenue. The man was trying to use a hand-held propane torch to kill the weeds in a planter box in front of his property when the plants caught fire.Shortly after the plants caught fire, the flames spread to the rest of the house.Firefighters arrived quickly and were able to extinguish the flames in about five minutes.Authorities estimate there is about ,000 in damage to the house.No one was injured. 613
