Organizations across the country are working hard to ensure underserved communities have the medical services they need to keep them healthy this flu season.Health experts say the flu vaccine can help prevent further COVID-19 complications, leading to a major effort to expand treatment, testing and vaccine availability for low income communities. "We've taken the results of our efforts and we are working with clinicians and community leaders and patient and provider organizations to educate, to promote strategies for increasing flu vaccination by providers," said Dr. Laura Lee Hall, the President of the Center for Sustainable Healthcare Quality and Equity, which is part of the National Minority Quality Forum. She and other experts have been working over the last two years to come up with a better way to promote flu vaccination in communities of color."We should enhance efforts for flu vaccination so as to minimize the risk of serious respiratory illnesses in the population and the toll it can take in the healthcare system. We all know that COVID has disproportionately impacted people of color so they may be even at increased risk," said Dr. Hall. The group is hoping to boost flu vaccinations up to 40%.Emergency physician Dr. Kenny Banh, who is also the Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education at UCSF-Fresno, has been leading the university's mobile health and learning unit in Fresno, CA. This year, they're using million in Cares Act funds to expand COVID-19 testing and healthcare to underserved areas, in particular, communities of color."Besides the fact that it's the feel good and they deserve it and I believe everyone deserves a right to healthcare, but the reality is, it's very hard to understand for a lot of people where they're coming from. A lot of them are disenfranchised," said Dr. Banh.Dr. Banh says just opening up a clinic with free testing in an underserved community doesn't mean local people there will use it. He says many are fearful of physicians who don't speak their language or don't look like them. They can be worried about what testing implies. Hence, the major effort to serve and educate from all aspects."We offer free COVID testing but also we offer free contact tracing and social support services and other preventive health. Meaning, we’re giving out flu shots, we're doing HIV tests. We also concede for your general medical care, blood pressure, diabetes free of cost, no charges for anyone that walks through the door," said Dr. Banh.Dr. Banh adds, they have several clinics across different communities in Fresno, hoping to ultimately test 8,000 people for COVID by the end of 2020. Dr. Laura Lee Hall says not taking care of underserved communities during the pandemic can have grave implications this winter."Living in an environment where social determinants of health are really imperfect and worse than that. So, what has the result been to date? It has been shorter lives. I mean, let’s be clear. Lifespan is shorter for people of color," said Dr. Hall. OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — A 6-year-old girl was struck in the head by what police say was a celebratory gunfire bullet during New Year's Eve parties in Northern California.The East Bay Times reports the child, who has not been identified, is in stable condition at a hospital Tuesday.Police say the girl was shot sometime before 2 a.m. during a family party in her East Oakland backyard.Investigators say the bullet was apparently fired into the air from another location nearby. Detectives are trying to track down the shooter.The newspaper says a family member drove the girl to a hospital. 597
Open bars, lavish dinners and in-person get-togethers will likely be out of the question for many companies this year when it comes to planning end-of-the-year celebrations. A number of holiday office parities in 2020 will be non-existent, but experts say employers can still do a lot to show employees they appreciate them this holiday season."What I’ve heard recently is obviously, are employers are having to come up with different types of gatherings, not even gatherings but ways to celebrate. And what makes me feel good is there’s still desire to do that, it’s just how to do it," said Lisa Frydenlund, an HR Knowledge Adviser with the Society for Human Resources Management. She says some businesses will be holding virtual celebrations."I even saw just recently something about getting a musician or some sort of that to be prerecorded and then sent out to people. So, it's a little mini concert. I think employers are getting very creative," said Frydenlund.Valerie Keels works at the company Gavi, which has offices in Switzerland and Washington, D.C. Keels is working with a team of five other people to put on a virtual end-of-the-year office event. Complete with a virtual cartoonist, personal videos and more for their 350 employees."I think it serves a purpose. It's a reminder to those people who are more solitary, and okay being that way, that yeah, we’re all in this together and we can still be collegial and still have fun together," said Keels.The biggest focus for Keels and her team is making sure their employees come together to celebrate all of their hard work."It's so important that organizations either foster or maintain that connectedness because it's so important for the motivation and even well-being of staff to be connected to both the organization and the colleagues," said Keels.For some companies in lieu of holiday party, extra vacation days will be offered, as a way to show employees their appreciation during this unprecedented year."Time away is definitely something that's an added benefit that people can provide. You don't have to have a celebration or try to mimic what we had before, but why not give the gift of time," said Frydenlund.Frydenlund says while some companies will still be hosting holiday parties as usual, she says many will likely consider the pandemic and proceed with caution."When you start to think about what is the intention around celebrating around the holidays and I’ve always wanted to make sure you’re inclusive in doing so because everybody celebrates things differently. And just like this entire year, it's giving employers more time and awareness to think about well how do we do that," said Frydenlund.Coming together or giving back to so many who've worked especially hard and gone through so much in today's new normal. 2812
OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — Oceanside Police Chief Frank McCoy wrote a letter to Oceanside residents saying he was concerned after watching a video of one of his officers tasing a man to the ground. The letter comes after the department released body camera footage, just two days after the incident. Chief McCoy has since asked the Professional Standards Unit to review the case.A man topples to the ground after being tased by an Oceanside police officer. On Tuesday afternoon, officers learned about a man armed with a knife, punching, stabbing, and attempting to carjack several people in the Mesa Margarita neighborhood. When officers arrived, they found the suspect, David Avila.In the video released on the department's twitter page, you can see two perspectives of the incident. One was from the body camera of the officer who deployed his taser. The other was a cell phone video, shot by a citizen.During a heated altercation, the video shows Avila with his hands up, kicking what looks to be a knife towards the officer in front of him. At the same time, the officer switches to his less-lethal option, the taser."Stay back. Stay back! Down on your knees!" the officer yelled.Avila then takes two steps toward the officer, stops, and is then shot by a taser.Two days after the incident, McCoy not only released the footage but said in a statement, "I have had the opportunity to review this video and it has raised concerns to me."Retired San Diego Police lethal force instructor, Ray Shay, says it could be that the officer tased the suspect who already had his hands up, from the front. Under the department's Policy and Procedures Manual, it states:"A TASER should be aimed at a suspect's upper torso and, when tactically possible, should be aimed at the suspect's back. This provides a larger target and avoids possible injury to a suspect's eyes. (Revised 07/01)"However, Shay believes this was justified."With the taser to the front, and then lethal option behind him, and the bean bag option to the left, in this challenging circumstance, the officers did the best they can do to safely take the suspect into custody," Shay said.Barry Pollard, formerly with the San Diego Citizens Advisory Board on Police Community Relations, says what bothered him was what happened as officers subdued Avila."You would think, in these days, nobody's knee would come close to the neck are," Pollard said. "It looked like a reaction is what it looked like, then he caught himself and moved his knee."However, Pollard says because the knee was not directly on the neck, he does not see this as a blatant violation.ABC 10News reached out to Oceanside Police to see exactly what parts of the video concerned the Chief. Seau, who died in 2012, was well-known in the community even as a high school sports star. "Whenever I'm playing on the football field I want you guys all to know, I represent Oceanside. It all started here,” he once told 10News. Seau’s sister Mary watched her brother shine at USC and eventually, the San Diego Chargers. Seau’s standout NFL career gave him the platform to give back through the Junior Seau Foundation with events like Shop with a Jock. Mary Seau says people approach her with a message about her brother’s generosity. "If it wasn't for Junior, I wouldn't be where I'm at today... and that warms my heart." When Seau took his own life, the pain was overwhelming in Oceanside. "It was a big loss. Not only for our family, but for the whole entire community." Years later, his memory is as strong as ever.
