Patrick Quinn, a co-founder of the popular Ice Bucket Challenge, died at the age of 37.The ALS Association announced the news on social media Sunday.Quinn was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) shortly after his 30th birthday, according to the association. Since his diagnosis, Quinn raised awareness for the disease, co-creating the widely popular Ice Bucket Challenge.ALS posted the following message of Quinn following his passing:"We are deeply sorry to share that Pat Quinn passed away today. Pat was co-founder of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and an inspiration to millions of people around the world.Pat was diagnosed in March of 2013, a month after his 30th birthday. Immediately after he was diagnosed, he decided he wanted to make a difference in the ALS community. Taking a cue from his friend, the late Pete Frates, Pat established his own team of supporters – Quinn for the Win – to raise awareness and funds for the fight against ALS.Pat, who lived in Yonkers, NY, saw the Ice Bucket Challenge on the social media feed of the friends and family of the late Anthony Senerchia, of Pelham, NY, and knew it was the key to raising ALS awareness. He and his Quinn for the Win supporters, along with Pete Frates and his Team Frate Train supporters, turned the challenge into the biggest social media phenomenon in history. The Ice Bucket Challenge went on to raise 5 million for The ALS Association and over 0 million around the world for ALS research. It dramatically accelerated the fight against ALS, leading to new research discoveries, expanded care for people living with ALS, and significant investment from the government in ALS research. In 2015, The ALS Association honored Pat, Pete, and Anthony as “ALS Heroes” at our annual Leadership Conference, an award given to people living with ALS who have had a significant positive impact on the fight against ALS. Anthony passed away in 2017 and Pete passed away in 2019.Following the Ice Bucket Challenge, Pat took advantage of every opportunity he could to raise awareness of ALS, speaking to groups large and small. He raised awareness of the effects of ALS on a person’s voice and the importance of voice banking through “Project Revoice,” which was seen by millions around the world. He continued hosting an Ice Bucket Challenge in his beloved Yonkers every year (“Every August Until a Cure”) and he started a social media campaign encouraging everyone to “FindUrSmile.” He also starred with NFL legend Terry Bradshaw in a television public service announcement that has aired more than 63,000 times nationwide.Pat fought ALS with positivity and bravery and inspired all around him. Those of us who knew him are devastated but grateful for all he did to advance the fight against ALS."Read the full statement here. 2810

PINELLAS CO., FLA. — A Pinellas County couple is praising a Good Samaritan who returned 0,000 in jewelry after finding their luggage in the road."He's our Christmas Angel," Dr. Joe Fitzgerald said. "He not only found it. He also called 911 and made sure we got our jewelry back."Joe and his wife Elif Fitzgerald attended an annual Denim and Diamonds charity event for Hands Across the Bay Saturday night. That's why Elif Fitzgerald had expensive pieces of jewelry with her.The Fitzgeralds were one of the sponsors for the event, and they had a lot to pack up at the end of the night. Joe Fitzgerald says he put most of the luggage in the back of his trunk, including his wife's luggage, with the jewelry in it."On my way home the back hatch opened and the bag fell out near West Bay Dr. and Indian Rocks Rd." he said. The Fitzgeralds had no idea the bag was gone, "until I looked at my phone."Elif Fitzgerald said she had dozens of missed calls and text messages telling her someone found their bag and the jewelry in it."I was completely shocked that they returned it," she said. "I have valuable jewelry. It's an amazing feeling knowing there are people out there like that man."The couple is so appreciative to their "Christmas Angel" that they plan to meet up with him and give him a reward. This story was originally published by JJ Burton on WFTS in Tampa, Florida. 1380

Pfizer announced Friday that it would submit a request to the FDA Friday for its COVID-19 vaccine to be granted Emergency Use Authorization.Earlier this week, Pfizer said that a final analysis of trial results showed the vaccine is 95% effective.“Our work to deliver a safe and effective vaccine has never been more urgent, as we continue to see an alarming rise in the number of cases of COVID-19 globally. Filing in the U.S. represents a critical milestone in our journey to deliver a COVID-19 vaccine to the world and we now have a more complete picture of both the efficacy and safety profile of our vaccine, giving us confidence in its potential,” Dr. Albert Bourla, Pfizer Chairman and CEO, said in a press release.Pfizer's two-shot vaccine has already been in mass production for months, and thousands of doses will be ready for delivery if and when the FDA grants authorization. Pfizer says that is on track to produce 50 million doses of the vaccine by the end of 2020 and plans to produce 1.3 billion doses of the vaccine in 2021.According to "Operation Warp Speed," the federal government's plan for distributing the vaccine, upon authorization, the drug will initially be rationed for high-risk populations and health care workers. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, says he believes a vaccine won't be widely available until April. On Wednesday, Pfizer announced that a final analysis of its vaccine candidate showed that of 40,000 participants who participated in the trial, 170 people had contracted the virus. Of those 170 people, 162 received only a placebo injection — meaning just eight out of the 20,000 people who actually received the vaccine contracted the virus. The company added Wednesday that there have been no safety concerns with the vaccine. In a randomized survey of 8,000 participants, only 2% reported suffering severe fatigue, and only 4% reported suffering severe headaches. Those who say they suffered side effects only experienced them briefly after vaccination.Pfizer's announcement comes as COVID-19 cases are spiking around the world. In the U.S. alone, about 2.5 million people have contracted the virus in the month of November alone. Hospitalizations linked to COVID-19 are at an all-time high, and deaths have begun to tick up in recent weeks. 2322

Part of the cure for COVID-19 might be found in sharks dwelling deep in our oceans.“Everybody’s, ‘oh, there’s a hundred million being taken anyway, why are you worried about vaccine?’” said Stefanie Brendl of Shark Allies, a nonprofit for shark conservation. She says during the pandemic, more sharks are being harvested for squalene, an oil found in their livers and is often used to increase the effectiveness of vaccines.“The more products we come up with that require shark parts, the more we’re fueling this 100,000,000 sharks a year number,” she said.Brendl says many pharmaceutical companies are using shark squalene to produce a coronavirus vaccine and that if everyone in the world received two doses, 500,000 sharks would have to be slaughtered to meet the demand.“We need to look at this and we need to hold the vaccine companies accountable to test alternatives,” she said. One of the companies, Brendl, is calling out pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline, which plans on manufacturing 1 billion doses of a “pandemic vaccine” in 2021.While GSK says squalene pulled from shark livers is used in some of its vaccines, the company claims it’s also exploring squalene found in some plants.“One research team has tried to make in yeast so you could grow cultures of yeasts similar to fermenting beer,” said David Kroll, Ph.D., a professor of pharmacology at the University of Colorado, Anschutz Medical Campus. He says finding a cure for coronavirus will be the biggest vaccine undertaking in recent medical history.“The biggest concern is whether more sharks are going to have to be killed for this monumental global effort,” Kroll said.Shark experts believe this is a global challenge.“Many of the sharks that are being targeted are deep sea sharks and they’re found in open ocean environments that may not be protected,” said Chris Lowe, a professor of marine biology and director of the Shark Lab at California State University, Long Beach. He says tens of millions of sharks are already killed each year and some companies poach shark corpses for squalene to make numerous products ranging from vaccines to cosmetics.Lowe warns an increase in killings could impact our ecosystem.“Those animals play a very important role that could affect people on land,” he said. While the cost of a cure for COVID-19 is still unknown, Lowe says killing more sharks could mean extinction for several shark species. 2414

Parents often worry about their kids riding the school bus. But waiting for the bus or getting off after school can pose a far greater danger. The risk was highlighted this month, as at least five children lost their lives when they were hit by drivers near school bus stops across the U.S. At least seven other children were hurt in bus stop incidents. Now, a petition on WhiteHouse.gov seeks to call upon national leaders to create and sign legislation that institutes stricter penalties on drivers who violate rules around stopping for school buses. The petition makes suggestions such as 30 days in jail and 90-day license suspensions. Overall, wrecks involving school transportation, including buses, make up a tiny fraction of deadly vehicle incidents — less than 1 percent of nearly 325,000 fatal crashes in the US from 2006 to 2015, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data show. 908
