BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhua) -- Rainstorms and consequent floods have left 107 people dead and 59 missing in ten provinces and municipalities -- mostly along the Yangtze River as of Tuesday afternoon, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.Latest figures from the ministry show that, as of 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, rain-triggered floods had affected some 29 million people and 997,000 had been evacuated.Further, the direct economic loss had reached 19.75 billion yuan (2.89 billion U.S. dollars). BEIJING, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development said Wednesday that it has begun work on the reconstruction plan for the mudslide-flattened Zhouqu County in northwest China's Gansu Province.An inspection team would be sent to the disaster-ravaged areas to gather information for drawing up the reconstruction plan, the ministry said in a brief statement posted on its website.However, it did not elaborate on the reconstruction plan nor provide detailed information about the inspection team.On the same day, Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu urged authorities to prepare for post-disaster reconstruction of the mudslide-hit regions.He said the responsible authorities must promptly send competent teams to the disaster sites to assess losses so reconstruction plans can be developed on the basis of these findings.The death toll from the massive mudslides in Zhouqu, beginning on Aug. 8, had risen to 1,287 as of 4 p.m. Wednesday, with 457 still missing, the local disaster relief headquarters said.
NEW YORK, June 10 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a bill to recognise Nanjing City of China as a "Model for International Cooperation" in order to award the city's active involvement in cooperation with the United States in education, innovation and entrepreneurship, and this was the first Chinese city to win such an award, Li Jiansheng, executive chairman of the U.S.-China Partnership Committee, told Xinhua on Thursday.The House passed the bill, tabled by Representative John Tierney of Massachusetts, on Tuesday night, Li said, adding that this will pave the way for further cooperation between China and the United States in education, innovation and entrepreneurship, which are very conducive to build a stronger China in the future."I rise today to speak about a model for international cooperation that is said to hold promise and future opportunities for the United States," Tierney said when he was taking the floor at the House. BEIJING, July 15 (Xinhua) -- China issued an orange alert on Thursday for wave surges, the second highest level warning, forecasting that Typhoon Conson may reach land Friday on the southeast coast of China' s Hainan province.The National Marine Environment Forecast Center warned of a 6-metre wave surge in the middle and the north of the South China Sea from Thursday night through Friday.Meanwhile, warnings were also issued for a possible 5-metre wave surge off the east shore of Hainan province and a 3-metre wave surge off the west shore of Guangdong province and the southern coast of Hainan.The Center also issued a yellow-level alert for a storm surge which might affect Guangdong and Hainan province.The center suggested local governments gear up for a disaster response.Conson is currently wreaking havoc in the Philippines, killing at least 26 people and injuring 14 others as of Thursday.
