The FDA announced on Friday that it has issued an emergency use authorization for a second coronavirus vaccine. Its approval comes just one week after the FDA gave an emergency use authorization for a similar vaccine by Pfizer. That vaccine began distribution earlier this week. Moderna’s vaccine has been hailed as a medical breakthrough. The vaccine has been considered 94.1% effective against the virus. According to Moderna, none of the thousands who were given two shots of the vaccine had severe COVID-19 symptoms. That is compared to 30 patients who were given a placebo who had symptoms.In order to obtain an emergency use authorization, the FDA weighed the vaccine’s benefits against possible side effects. An emergency use authorization is not a full FDA approval, but it allows those outside of a clinical or hospital setting to obtain the vaccine. “With the availability of two vaccines now for the prevention of COVID-19, the FDA has taken another crucial step in the fight against this global pandemic that is causing vast numbers of hospitalizations and deaths in the United States each day,” FDA Commissioner Stephen M. Hahn said in a statement. “Through the FDA’s open and transparent scientific review process, two COVID-19 vaccines have been authorized in an expedited timeframe while adhering to the rigorous standards for safety, effectiveness, and manufacturing quality needed to support emergency use authorization that the American people have come to expect from the FDA. These standards and our review process, which are the same we have used in reviewing the first COVID-19 vaccine and intend to use for any other COVID-19 vaccines, included input from independent scientific and public health experts as well as a thorough analysis of the data by the agency’s career staff.”According to Moderna, approximately 20 million doses will be delivered to the U.S. government by the end of December 2020. Moderna said it expects to have between 100 million and 125 million doses available globally in the first quarter of 2021, with 85-100 million of those available in the U.S.While the vaccine could nearly eliminate the number of hospitalizations and deaths associated with the virus, the shot might result in some symptoms.In an interview with CNN last month, Operation Warp Speed chief scientific adviser Moncef Slaoui said that 10 to 15% of those immunized had noticeable side effects.“Most people will have much less noticeable side effects. That frankly -- in comparison to a 95% protection against an infection that can be deadly or significantly debilitating -- I think is an appropriate balance," he told CNN. 2648

The COVID-19 pandemic is teaching us important lessons about the next potential infectious disease threat.“That includes things like dealing with the problems that are before us now, things like antibiotic resistance that kills too many Americans every day and preparing for things we don't know about by having good surveillance programs and public health infrastructure,” said Dr. Helen Boucher, Infectious Diseases Chief at Tufts Medical Center.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says antibiotic-resistant infections impact nearly 3 million people a year and are responsible for 35,000 deaths. That's less than COVID-19, but there is new evidence the two are colliding.A new CDC report points to an outbreak of a multiple drug-resistant bacteria at a New Jersey hospital already dealing with a surge of COVID-19 patients. From February through July, there were 34 of the bacteria cases. Half were in COVID-19 patients and 10 of them died.At the time, the hospital wasn't able to use the same standard of infection control practices due to capacity, shortages in PPE, medical equipment and staff.“Certainly, having health care workers healthy so they can take care of patients is very important,” said Boucher. “You might have seen that there had been some outbreaks, places across the country that have really impacted the ability to have adequate health care workers take care of patients, and that is the worst thing that could happen. And we know leads to unnecessary deaths.”COVID-19 hospitalizations are higher now than the previous two peaks in April and July.Recruiting additional medical staff is also more difficult now as more hospitals are seeing surges. In the spring, some medical facilities were laying staff off due to fewer patients.The CDC says drug-resistant infections decreased when COVID cases dropped. In tandem with that sales surge, bicycle theft has soared in a number of U.S. cities.As you might expect, the rise in bike ownership and theft has prompted more Americans to ponder insurance coverage for bicycles. That’s a particularly valid concern, since more than 2 million bikes are stolen each year in North America, according to Project 529. You also can explore a standalone bike insurance policy.Bike insurance policies usually provide broader and deeper coverage than homeowners or renters insurance policies do. For example, Markel’s bike insurance can cover things like crash damage, roadside assistance, spare parts and replacement-bike rentals, whereas a typical homeowners or renters insurance does not.Markel and another bike insurer, Velosurance, say their annual premiums start at 0. Markel’s average bike insurance policy costs 0 to 0 a year.Trusted Choice, a network of independent insurance agents, says you should look into standalone bike insurance if:You spent a lot of money on your bike. An everyday bike might cost roughly 0 to 0, while a specialty bike might go for more than ,000.You frequently ride off-road, potentially placing you and your bike at greater risk for harm.You compete at cycling events.You own a bike that’s been specially designed, upgraded or modified.You lack homeowners or renters insurance.You don’t have health insurance to cover injuries you might suffer in a cycling crash.Should You File a Claim if Your Bike Is Stolen or Damaged?If your bike is worth 0 but your homeowners or renters policy carries a 0 deductible, Zacharia recommends against filing a claim.“Not only will a claim increase your monthly premiums, but you won’t be getting anything in return. Essentially, it’s a lose-lose situation,” she says.If your bike is worth more than the deductible, calculate your potential claim check amount. If it’s small, it still probably isn’t worth filing a claim and risking a rate increase in the future that could cost you more over time.“It’s really about the balance between the cost of replacement and the increased cost on your monthly premiums. Some people might also say the hassle of making a claim is an additional downside,” says Zacharia.“Remember that your deductible matters,” Zacharia adds. “If your bicycle is worth 0 but your deductible is set at ,000, you’ll be paying out of pocket to replace it. It’s up to you where you set a deductible level. Just be prepared for the bill.”Registering Your BikeOne way to discourage bike theft—or at least have a better chance of getting your stolen bike back—is to engrave a serial number on it and register the number with the local police department. The Federal Aviation Administration on Friday ordered new inspection requirements for engines similar to the one that failed earlier in the week on a Southwest Airlines flight, resulting in a passenger's death.The emergency airworthiness directive will require airlines to perform an ultrasonic inspection of certain CFM56-7B engines within 20 days of receipt of the order, it said. Federal safety investigators have said the naked eye cannot detect the cracks and signs of metal fatigue that doomed the engine on Southwest Flight 1380."We are issuing this AD because we evaluated all the relevant information and determined the unsafe condition described previously is likely to exist or develop in other products of the same type design," the directive said.The Southwest Boeing 737 took off Tuesday morning from New York, headed for Dallas. About 20 minutes into the flight, at about 32,500 feet, a fan blade broke off the engine and shrapnel shattered a window.Jennifer Riordan, 43 and a mother of two, was sucked out of the broken window and pulled back inside by fellow passengers. She died from blunt force trauma at a hospital after the plane's emergency landing in Philadelphia.The new inspection is to be done while the engine is on the aircraft's wing. Inspections take between two and four hours per engine, according to the FAA and manufacturer.Friday's announcement came shortly after the engine manufacturer, CFM International, issued a service bulletin recommending the CFM56-7B engine be inspected more frequently. After reaching a certain age, the engines should be inspected approximately every two years, the manufacturer said.The manufacturer told CNN it has been working with the FAA on the inspection procedures.  1749
