MOSCOW, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's steady economic rise causes both high hopes and anxiety among world leaders, but a Russian expert believes China's peaceful development is an opportunity for the entire world.Yakov Berger of the Far East Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences told Xinhua that China's policy of peaceful development is a strategic choice, aimed at long-term and sustainable growth."China overcame the global financial crisis, decreased poverty, and increased people's wealth," Berger said."Still, many important tasks for China remain to be fulfilled and first of all, modernization, industrialization and urbanization. This is why China needs strong and long-lasting peace," he said.Berger said China's policy of peaceful development has already won support from the majority of countries, so they are willing to cooperate with the world's most powerful developing nation."China's peaceful development gives chance to all people in the world, as China became the main engine of the global economic development. Many developed countries are gravitated to China because they depend on Chinese supplies and the Chinese market," Berger said. However, although some countries are aware that China's sustainable growth requires peace and stability, some eye China's growing influence as negative, the professor said.Berger said that Beijing tries to persuade Washington that China's rise does not threaten American security. The question, then, is to what degree is the U.S. ready to accept the new reality, Berger said.Berger cited two main reasons why some Western politicians don't trust Beijing."First, this is a natural response from the people who got used to a certain world order," he said, "Such an order implies the existence of the so-called 'golden billion' people who have access to all of civilization's benefits while the other five billion can't make ends meet."Berger said that when China attempts to achieve the same living standards, that induces some fears based on the notion that the Earth resources are limited.Berger believed the second reason is xenophobia and racism, which generates talk about the "Chinese threat.""But they talked about the 'China threat' even in times when China used to be an underdeveloped nation," Berger noted.

BEIJING, May 10 (Xinhuanet) -- Autism spectrum disorder may be under diagnosed and under reported worldwide and rigorous screening is needed for accurate estimates, said researchers in Monday's American Journal of Psychiatry.Researchers from the Yale Child Study Center, George Washington University and other leading institutions screened every child aged 7 to 12 in Ilsan district of the city of Goyang, a community of 488,590 in South Korea, and found more than two-thirds of ASD cases in the mainstream school population unrecognized and untreated. They estimated the prevalence of ASD in South Korea to be 2.64 percent, or approximately 1 in 38 children. The figure is more than twice the rate usually reported in the developed world. Even that rate, about 1 percent, has been climbing rapidly in recent years — from 0.6 percent in the United States in 2007, for example.“From the get-go we had the feeling that we would find a higher prevalence than other studies because we were looking at an understudied population: children in regular schools,” said the lead researcher, Dr. Young-Shin Kim, a child psychiatrist and epidemiologist at the Yale Child Study Center.By contrast, other research groups measure autism prevalence by examining and verifying records of existing cases kept by health care and special education agencies, but leaving out many children whose parents and schools have never sought a diagnosis.Kim said the researchers concluded autism prevalence estimates worldwide may increase if rigorous screening and comprehensive population studies are used to produce prevalence estimates. But it is suggested the findings did not mean that the actual numbers of children with autism were rising, simply that the study was more comprehensive than previous ones.

BEIJING, May 24 (Xinhuanet) -- Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg welcomed more kids to join in the social network site, according to International Business Times reports on Monday. He made this comment in the NewSchools Summit in California.Zuckerberg said Facebood can help young kids to learn from each other and acquire more knowledge about using the internet."That will be a fight we take on at some point," Zuckerberg said, "My philosophy is that for education you need to start at a really, really young age." At the moment, Facebook officially does not allow the children younger than 13 to sign up, since the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) forbids children under 13 from joining an online service which collects user information data. However it recently revealed that 7.5 million Facebook users were younger than that, accoding to a study released last week by Consumer Reports. Some experts suggested Facebook may not be in any position to provide that education in its current form. "The lessons of digital citizenship have to start young, but I don't feel that Facebook is the venue to have those lessons occur. A lot of missteps happen on that site without a lot of coaching." said Dr. Gwenn O'Keeffe, an expert on young children's education.

DAVOS, Switzerland, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- China is ready to push the decade-long Doha Round negotiations for a final success, Chinese Minister of Commerce Chen Deming said here on Saturday.Speaking at the World Trade Organization (WTO) Mini-Ministerial Meeting which brought together representatives from over 20 major trading powers, Chen said that China is ready to collaborate with other WTO members in a practical and proactive manner so as to draw a successful conclusion of the Doha Round talks by the end of 2011.A rapid conclusion of the negotiations, Chen said, will be beneficial to global economic recovery, which is to the interest of all.The commerce minister acknowledged the year 2011 as a "window of opportunity," albeit a narrow one."China will give support to the roadmap proposed by WTO Director-General Pascal Lamy," he said, adding that the country is willing to act vigorously to push forward the negotiation process. To ensure that an early final deal could be in reach, Chen said, parties should set goals in a practical manner, in accordance with the ambition level, and stick to what has been achieved as well as the Doha Development Agenda (DDA), while focusing primarily on pending issues.Held on the sidelines of the annual World Economic Forum, the WTO Mini-Ministerial Meeting is an annual event under the auspices of the Swiss Federal Government.Chen on Friday also joined discussions with his counterparts from the emerging club -- India, Brazil and South Africa, before attending the trade G7 meeting, consisting of Australia, Brazil, China, the European Union, India, Japan and the United States.
