SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The oldest San Diego women's choir is scrambling to raise funds for a last-second trip to sing at the Pearl Harbor Memorial Ceremony. The Choral Club of San Diego dazzled crowds from veterans homes to Spreckles Organ Pavillion. They've been singing since 1939."It was a very private women's group. They all got together in their homes and they had tea," Executive Director Caron Andregg said, painting the picture of what the club looked like back then. In 2012, they officially became a 501(c)(3) non-profit and over the past five years they've been tuning to a more modern note."We've filtered out a lot of the older traditional music and we started filtering in more modern music," Andregg said.She said the crowds have loved it and they've ran with it, gaining notoriety and ultimately an invite to the Pearl Harbor Memorial Ceremony. Andregg added someone personally recommended the club to the organizers of the event on Honolulu."Getting 25 ladies to Hawaii is no small task," Music Director Kyle Adam Blair said. The group has been frantically making calls for two weeks, but are not gaining any traction."I can't even get people to pick up their phones ... That's why we're panicking and asking you for help," Andregg said.The club is stepping in after an East Coast choir suffered a misfortune and couldn't perform.Andregg said they are honored for the opportunity to be the only vocal ensemble."We're from a Navy town and we have a relationship with the Midway and we have relationships with other Naval outlets, we've performed for Naval ceremonies," she said.The group needs to raise ,000 in a month so they can book the flights and lodging for the choir members. 1706

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Thousands of dogs and their owners were out for the annual Humane Society Walk for Animals at Liberty Station Saturday morning. The event raises money for all animals at the humane society, including pets that have been abused, injured or orphaned.  287

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Rock ’n’ Roll marathon returns to San Diego in June, bringing hundreds of athletes and music to city streets. The 5K event is scheduled for Saturday June 1, while the half-marathon and marathon will be held Sunday, June 2. Entry fees are , 2, and 2 respectively. The marathon course starts on Sixth Avenue near Balboa Park. It extends as far east as Kensington, and north to Mission Bay Park, with a finish in Little Italy. Runners can enjoy the sounds of bands along the course, and support from San Diego cheerleading groups. For those who don’t want to run, the Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon Health and Fitness Expo will take place Friday, May 31, and Saturday, June 1 at the San Diego Convention Center. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Sweetwater Union High School District announced their plans for the 2020-2021 school year Thursday night to the board and community.Due to a rise in coronavirus cases and state restrictions classes will be completely virtual from Aug. 3-Oct. 2.Students will have a block schedule, which means no change for many students. They will have three classes a day with 30-45 minutes of face time with their teacher and 45-60 minutes of class spent as independent study.The district said this provides flexibility to both teachers and students.The district said there will be graded assignments and tests, but teachers voiced their opinion saying it is hard to monitor whether students are cheating. The district set three checkpoints to determine if the district will remain virtual throughout the entire school year. Those dates are September 21, November 30 and March 1. These dates allow the district to plan for the future, coordinating buses and teacher's needs.Some parents aren't comfortable with the idea of going back to campus anytime soon."I'm feeling like they need to study it more," said Dr. Marie Zhivago said. Her incoming senior and freshman students have asthma, making them more vulnerable to COVID-19. "I don't want my kids to be guinea pigs. I don't want them to be the test," Zhivago said. She thinks if students go back to school too early there could be another wave of cases, adding, "I'm not ready to sacrifice one child for that, one death, no way."The district said when they're allowed to bring children back to campus there will be strict guidelines for social distancing, masks and sanitation.The district is offering a separate virtual learning opportunity for up to 360 families, called Launch Academy.The district said students are being connected with equipment to get them online and have resources available for students, teachers and counselors.Zhivago said these investments will pay dividends, telling ABC 10News, "I think they should put the funding into distance learning because this is definitely going to happen again."The board will vote Monday on the proposed plans. 2137
