San Diego (KGTV) There’s a battle over prime real estate in Hillcrest. There were plans to use the Third Avenue location for luxury housing, but some county leaders are hoping to use the space as a way to serve the homeless dealing with mental health challenges. Over a decade ago, the location once served as a center for adolescents. The county had plans to use the 7-acre lot for luxury condos. “I don’t believe that the public policy changes we face as a region is a shortage of luxury condos,” says County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher. “I believe the public policy challenge we face as a region is an investment in behavioral health services.”The vacant space on Third Avenue sits less than a mile from Scripps Mercy Hospital and UCSD Medical Center, Hillcrest. “We have 50 to 100 patients in our emergency rooms every day that need some form of mental health services,” says Patty Maysent, CEO of UC San Diego Health. The facility would offer services like psychiatric care and substance abuse. “A lot of folks go to the emergency room, get the most expensive care, get stabilized, and they have nowhere to go,” said Fletcher. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) – Fire crews Wednesday night responded to a brush fire in Chula Vista amid dry conditions. According to California Highway Patrol, the fire started off of Interstate 805 North near E Street around 8:42 p.m. CHP says the fire may have started in a homeless encampment. By 9 p.m., Chula Vista Police told CHP no flames were visible in the area. 380

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are investigating after a man was found dead in a car in San Diego's Southcrest neighborhood Wednesday morning. According to police, the man's body was found in the driver's seat of the vehicle on the 4000 block of Boston Avenue just before noon. Police say the victim had a wound on his head. At this time, police say they're searching for three teenage boys seen leaving the scene around the time the victim was found dead.Both 40th and 41st Street from Newton Avenue to Boston Avenue and the 4000 block of Boston Avenue, including the North Alley and Recreation Center foot path were closed throughout the day Wednesday as police investigated.
