SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The San Diego Unified School District said Wednesday that they are coordinating and organizing with student leaders for March 14th, when students from across the country are planning for a walkout.The walkout is in response to the Florida shooting.  The student-led demonstration is meant to urge lawmakers to pass stronger gun control laws.“We support student's voice,” School Board President Kevin Beiser said in news conference Wednesday. The protests are planned at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 14th.  The district wants students to help plan events at all participating schools, which are mostly high schools, according to Andrew Sharp, a district spokesman.It will be up to those school communities to come up with a plan.  Sharp says, in general, the district would rather the students keep activities on campus in so-called “teach-ins” as opposed to “walk-outs but the superintendent has said, “students will not be disciplined for participation in planned peaceful demonstrations occurring at schools.” District heads will be meeting with student leaders from “Equity Coalition” on Wednesday, March 7 to hear their ideas on the protest. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Superior Court is having a hard time getting potential jurors to show up for jury duty. Jury trials started again last week after a seven month break because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The lack of potential jurors reporting to the court house forced the continuation of a criminal case this week. For two weeks in a row, only about 40 people showed up for their jury duty. ABC 10News learned 900 jurors were summoned both times. ABC 10News spoke to the court's presiding judge, Lorna Alksne, who explained the court is taking all safety measures, like temperature checks, mask use at all times, Plexiglass barriers and social distancing. Alskne explains there are consequences for not showing up, like sanctions and fees, but the court isn't taking those measures yet. The judge says about 300 people did respond this week delaying their service, but the hundreds of others did not respond. Jurors are able to delay their service if they have COVID-19 safety concerns, but court officials say otherwise, people need to show up. Local defense attorney Jan Ronis says the court is doing the best they can, but he worries a smaller selection of potential jurors could impact the diversity of the jury pool. Alskne says the court will summon 2,400 people next week, instead of 1,800, in hopes of getting enough jurors for two upcoming cases. 1379

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Sheriff's Department is making it easier for residents to receive — at times, indiscernible — messages issued by the department's helicopters.The free service will allow residents to receive a text of the message being issued by deputies by texting "Hello" to 858-866-4356 (HELO). Typically, the department uses its ASTREA helicopter loudspeakers to announce searches for missing persons or suspects, as well as during emergency situations like SWAT standoffs, disasters, shelter in place advisories, or crowd management.But, at times, though messages may be difficult to understand.The service is not automated, meaning users will have to send a text when they want to receive the message being issued in their area. And while the service is free from the department, standard text messaging rates may apply depending on phone plans.The department's text service only applies to SDSO patrol areas and is separate from the San Diego Police Department, which began issuing their helicopter alerts separately on the Nextdoor app and Twitter in 2015."If there is more than one active broadcast at any given time, you have the option to choose the message that impacts your location. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three cars were totaled after a semi crashed into a hydrant in the Midway District, sending water spewing into the air. The crash happened on the 2300 block of Sports Arena Boulevard around 1:45 p.m.Water could be seen shooting into the air and flooding the nearby street. It wasn't immediately clear what led to the crash. According to authorities, the water gushing out of the hydrant also picked up rocks, sending them shooting through windshields of nearby cars and flooding them with water.  544
