UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Calif. (KGTV) - Neighbors in University Heights say the city needs to do more to clear dead brush from a canyon along Washington Street.The canyon, often called "Camelot Canyon," runs east from the 163 and underneath the popular Vermont Street bridge.People who live nearby say the brush underneath, combined with homeless encampments, creates a fire hazard.Their fears came true last March when a massive fire broke out among the palm trees near the bridge. In the aftermath, the fire department ordered CalTrans and the City of San Diego to remove dead brush from the canyon.Neighbors say they didn't do enough."We're trying to get them to finish the job and help suppress wildfires," says Marybeth Chruden. Her group is hoping to present at least 1,000 signatures to the City Council at an upcoming meeting."If a fire starts in the middle of the night and nobody catches it in time, the palm trees go up, the eucalyptus trees go up, and we could have another fire like what happened in Paradise," says Andy Lange, referencing the fire in Northern California that burned thousands of homes.The Fire Department says clean up is complicated in the canyon. Part of it is owned and maintained by CalTrans. The rest is city property.According to Assistant Fire Marshall Eddie Villavicencio, city crews did two cleanups after last spring's fire; one in April and another in July. The delay between the two was a result of waiting for more funding. Also, city code only allowed the crews to clear out dead or dying vegetation, nothing more.Villavicencio also says the canyon is designated as Open Space and supposed to be left alone to let nature take over. Because of that, there is no requirement for the city to maintain the brush.CalTrans, meanwhile, has different requirements for their land in the canyon. Chruden and her group say the CalTrans land is maintained and kept clear.Villavicencio says the Fire Department is always looking for grants to help fund more cleanups in these areas. He also mentions a bigger problem is the homeless camps in canyons, which are typically the cause of fires. That part of the issue is a police and enforcement matter.Chruden's group says those explanations serve as further proof that the city needs to fund this kind of regular maintenance."This is such a wonderful neighborhood, such a good community, and we take pride in it," says Debora Morrison, who has spent time gathering signatures on the bridge. United States' Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said Sunday the Trump administration will announce more sanctions against Russia on Monday.On CBS's "Face the Nation," Haley said the Treasury Department will announce the new sanctions and insisted the US has sent "a strong message" about the use of chemical weapons."You will see that Russian sanctions will be coming down," said Haley, reiterating what she said earlier on Fox News. Two men are in jail after police say they stole a car -– with an infant inside.About 7:30 p.m. Monday, officers responded to a report of a stolen vehicle in the parking lot of a business in Boise, Idaho.“Evidence indicates that a car had been left running outside of a store, when it was stolen by two men,” according to a Boise Police Department news release. A 6-month-old infant was in the car when it was stolen. A parent pursued the car, until the driver stopped several blocks away.“One of the men exited with the child, who was still strapped into the infant car seat.  (The parent) safely took the child from the man. Thankfully, the child was unharmed,” the release stated.The suspect, later identified as Raymundo Gutierrez, 23, of Boise, was detained at the scene until officers arrived.  The other male fled in the stolen vehicle, officers said.Gutierrez was booked into the Ada County Jail and charged with accessory to grand theft, a felony.About 1:00 a.m. Tuesday, Boise Police received information that the stolen vehicle had been recovered in Canyon County -- and the driver, later identified as Robert DeShazo, was booked into the Canyon County Jail. He’s charged with felony possession of stolen property and driving under the influence, a misdemeanor.  Authorities said both suspects could face additional charges.          1396

VALLEY CENTER, Calif. -- An 18-year-old motorcyclist was killed after a head-on crash with a sedan in Valley Center Saturday.The crash happened around 3:30 p.m. Saturday on Mac Tan Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.Officers say the 18-year-old was riding his motorcycle at a high speed when he came to a bend, lost control of the bike and slid into the opposing lane of traffic.The teen was the struck by 2004 Kia Spectra, CHP say.The motorcyclist was taken to the hospital where he later died. The driver of the sedan was uninjured.Officers say driving under the influence hasn’t been ruled out as a possible factor in the crash. 653
