HAIKOU, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Typhoon Conson landed at Yalong Bay of Sanya City, in south China's island province of Hainan, late Friday, causing casualties.Conson made landfall at 7:50 p.m., packing winds of up to 126 km per hour at the center, according to the disaster prevention office of Sanya, a tourist resort.It brought heavy rains and strong winds to Sanya, uprooting trees, pulling down billboards and light poles and partly cutting power supply.A security guard was buried in debris after a giant billboard toppled at about 7:26 p.m.. The man was found dead at about 11 p.m. after rescuers pulled away the billboard with the help of machines.A motorcycle rider was hit by a falling billboard and died at the site at about 8 p.m..The typhoon is expected to hover in the island for about 9 hours before it enters Beibu Bay on Saturday morning.The city had recalled to port all fishing boats by Friday noon and almost 40,000 people across the island had been relocated by 4:30 p.m..The typhoon, the first to hit China this year, has triggered high waves and cut some village roads.

HONG KONG, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Air China, China's leading carrier listed in Hong Kong, said late Friday that it would pay 1. 3 98 billion U.S. dollars to buy 20 Boeing 737-800 planes.In a statement filed to the HK stock exchange, the carrier said the cost would be "payable by cash in installments" and it would " take delivery of the Boeing Aircraft in stages from 2013 to 2015"."The aircraft price is subject to price escalation by applying a formula. Boeing Company has granted to the Company (Air China) significant price concessions with regard to the Boeing Aircraft," said the statement.The transaction will be funded through cash generated from Air China's business operations, commercial bank loans and other financing instruments of Air China, said the statement.The Beijing-based airlines said the transaction would expand its fleet capacity with an increase of around 5 percent based on available tonne kilometers of Air China by the end of 2009.In particular, the deal would reinforce Air China's market share in the Chinese domestic market, and would also increase frequency of flights for a number of domestic and neighboring international routes, it added.By the end of September last year. BEIJING, July 6 (Xinhua) -- China's weather forecast authorities said Tuesday that rains are expected to fall on parts of east China starting Thursday, offering some respite to a wide-ranging heat wave that had wreaked havoc across the country over the past few days.From Beijing in the north to Guangzhou in the south, a number of the elderly and children were hospitalized for heat-related illnesses. Some zoo animals died or struggled to survive by laying on ice.Also, a passenger bus caught fire in downtown Beijing and swarms of locusts blanketed a couple of dry prairies and grasslands in the north.The National Meteorological Center (NMC) raised the heat alert to orange on Tuesday, one step before the highest level, and said at least 16 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities were enduring the extreme heat.In Beijing, the temperature shot up to 40.6 degrees Celsius, breaking the city's early July heat record in more than 50 years. Further, the extreme high temperatures would continue in north, east and west China for the next 24 hours before rains begin to fall, the authorities said."Every day we have about 300 patients, 100 more than the average," Qin Jian, head of the emergency unit of Xuanwu Hospital in Beijing, said. "The wards and emergency rooms have been full right from the morning."
