WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court is allowing a class-action lawsuit to proceed from minor league baseball players who allege they are being paid less than minimum wage.The justices offered no comment Monday in rejecting Major League Baseball's appeal.The case of Senne v. Royals was first filed in 2014 on behalf of former minor league player Aaron Senne, ESPN reported and has now expanded to include minor league players in Arizona, California, and Florida.In the lawsuit, the players claim most earned less than ,500 annually in violation of several laws.According to USA Today, if minor leaguers had played ball this season, they would have earned between 0-0 per week played.Minor League Baseball canceled its season due to the coronavirus pandemic.A judge had initially allowed only the California players to sue, but the federal appeals court in San Francisco ruled in favor of the players from Arizona and Florida. 941

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — An 11-year-old boy died of the novel coronavirus on Thursday, the youngest confirmed fatality from COVID-19 in the state, according to local government officials.Previously the youngest victim from COVID-19 was a 16-year-old girl from Lee County.The boy's death came the same day that Florida hit a grim record in connection with the pandemic, as the state announced 10,109 new cases, on Thursday. The new cases on Thursday put the state total at 169,106.There were more than 52,000 new cases of the coronavirus recorded across the country on Thursday. About 25,000 of those cases occurred in Arizona, California, Florida and Texas.Dr. David Dodson of Good Samaritan Hospital in West Palm Beach, Florida, fears that numbers will only increase.Dodson described the increase in positive COVID-19 cases as exponential and added that 17 percent of all the hospitalizations in Florida right now are people under the age of 45.Dodson said the best preventative measures people can do is wear masks, avoid large crowds and stay at home when possible."Even though it's beautiful outside, and the sun is shining, we're in a hot zone. We're in a pandemic. This is a lethal pandemic, and how this goes depends on each of our behavior," Dodson said. "If you really clamp down and make everyone stay home, the virus really can't be transmitted, so then the cases go down after a couple of weeks. WASHINGTON (AP) — The House Thursday passed a 7 billion defense policy bill that would give the military a 2.6 percent pay hike, the largest in nine years.The bipartisan 351-66 vote sends the measure to the Senate, where a key panel completed a companion measure in a closed-door session on Wednesday.The annual measure sets policies and a budget outline for the Pentagon that are funded by a subsequent appropriations bill that typically follows its parameters fairly closely.The military got a major budget increase under the terms of a bipartisan pact passed earlier this year that the Pentagon's many allies in Washington promise will address shortfalls in military readiness such as pilot training, maintenance of equipment, and procurement of new weapons systems.Readiness issues contributed to a situation in which almost four times as many military service members died in training accidents as opposed to combat. AP Film Writer Lindsey Bahr visited the AMC Waterfront 22 in West Homestead, Pennsylvania, just outside of Pittsburgh, on its opening day Thursday. It is one of 113 AMC locations to open nationwide, touting retro movies and retro pricing and strict sanitary policies to entice audiences back to theaters.
