SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two San Diego-area pet stores were cited over the weekend for selling puppies in defiance of a prior cease-and-desist order, an animal welfare agency announced Monday.Broadway Puppies in Escondido and Pups & Pets in Santee received citations from the San Diego Humane Society's Humane Law Enforcement department on Saturday, three days after being ordered to suspend all sales of pets until they could prove the animals were obtained from a legitimate source, SDHS officials reported.Approved suppliers include a public animal control agency or shelter, a facility run by a society for the prevention of cruelty to animals, a humane society shelter, or a rescue group that is in a cooperative agreement with at least one private or public shelter.Broadway Puppies was cited on four counts of allegedly violating California's ban on retail sales of dogs, cats and rabbits, and Pups & Pets got citations for two instances of the same offense, according to the Humane Society. 1007

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A group of Black student leaders from Poway Unified School District schools met last week with administrators, principals and counselors to discuss ways to address issues of racism and inequality in the district.The students are the presidents of the Black Student Unions at each of PUSD's five high schools.It was the first meeting since the student leaders sent an email asking to see changes in the district to improve the lives of students of color."Making PUSD not just not racist but transparently anti-racist," said Jade Thompson, president of the BSU at Rancho Bernardo High School.Thompason helped write the email, which also talked about the recently created Instagram account "Black in PUSD,” which anonymously details students' experiences with racism."We just think it was a great way to open up people's eyes cause people like to say not in this community," said Thompson.Superintendent Dr. Kim Phelps agrees, saying, "To hold people accountable, including the district and our teachers and everybody ... I'm proud of our students for doing that.”Phelps and Thompson both described the meeting as productive and positive.Among the issues discussed were student education and assemblies addressing racism. The district is also committing to more diverse hiring and curriculum."It's upon us to try to do better; we have a lot of work to do and we want to do better so it’s a growing and learning opportunity for all of us," said Phelps.The students and administrators also talked about the consequences for racism-related incidents.Students said they'd like to see a form of restorative justice instead of just punishment.Although both students and staff agree there's a lot more to be done, they also say the first step is recognizing the problem and starting the conversation."I have a lot of hope for the future of this year and the years to come," said Thompson. 1906

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A cruise ship passenger and three crew members who arrived in San Diego on Monday have since tested positive for the novel coronavirus.County spokesperson José álvarez confirmed a passenger on the Celebrity Eclipse, which arrived in San Diego Monday, has tested positive for COVID-19. Tuesday afternoon, county health officials revealed that 3 crew members, who had been self-isolating, also tested positive. County health officials said they were notified before the ship came in that one passenger had a heart ailment and "possible" pneumonia. The passenger was taken to a hospital Monday and later tested positive for COVID-19.RELATED: San Diego issues health orders on cruise ships amid COVID-19Deborah Filgate and her husband were among the 2,500 passengers on board that cruise. "We've been told all the way through that we were absolutely fine, no one sick at all, so it's a bit strange," said Filgate. Filgate and the other passengers went through a health screening before they were allowed to leave the ship. "We were very relieved to leave the ship, but thinking about what that might have represented to the people you came in contat with, it's not such a great feeling now," said Filgate.A letter from Celebrity Cruises was sent to passengers reading, "because you were a passenger on this same voyage, it is possible you were exposed to someone who was sick with COVID-19."The letter goes on to direct passengers to complete a 14-day isolation. The passenger is not a San Diego County resident. The passenger is in the hospital in serious condition."There is no change in the plan of disembarking the remaining passengers today," álvarez said regarding the ship. "They will be screened prior to departure and only those who are asymptomatic and without fever are allowed to leave and proceed to transportation out of the county."A statement from the cruise line to 10News read:"We received clearance from port authorities and public health officials to disembark our guests and return them safely to their homes. No guests or crewmembers reported with symptoms throughout the sailing, and guests are going through exit health screenings when they leave the ship. We remain in continuous contact with public health authorities and appreciate their guidance to protect the well-being of our guests and crew."Monday, Dr. Eric McDonald, the county's medical director of epidemiology, said 17 San Diegans were on the Celebrity Eclipse. Those individuals will complete their quarantine locally. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In an effort to lower costs in one the country's most expensive states for medications, Gov. Gavin Newsom wants California to manufacture its own generic drugs.Newsom is expected to send a proposal as part of the new state budget to the legislature Friday that would allow the state to negotiate contracts with drugmakers to manufacture selected prescriptions on behalf of California.“The cost of health care is just too damn high, and California is fighting back,” Newsom said in a statement. “These nation-leading reforms seek to put consumers back in the driver seat and lower health care costs for every Californian.”Three of the most expensive U.S. cities for medications are San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego. According to a survey by Kaiser Family Foundation, six in 10 Americans take prescription drugs, and 79 percent of those surveyed say the costs are unreasonable. Prescription drug prices have gone up 38 percent since 2017. Newsom's plan would make those medications available at an affordable price for 40 million people living in California. Details on what the drug program will look like will be available when Newsom submits his full proposal Friday afternoon.If approved, California will become the first state in the U.S. to have its own generic drug label. 1315
