CHENGDU, July 17 (Xinhua) -- At least 13 people were killed and 23 others remained missing after the worst rainstorm of this year lashed Sichuan Province Thursday night, the provincial flood control authorities said Saturday.The victims were killed by mountain torrents, landslides, house collapses or other rain-triggered disasters, according to Sichuan's flood control and drought relief headquarters.The rain forced the Shuangliu International Airport in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan, to close Friday, affecting more than 100 flights and at least 10,000 passengers.The rain stopped in Chengdu Saturday and the airport was working around the clock to handle a record 640 flight landings and takeoffs.Many Chinese regions have reported casualties and losses caused by the rain.Hubei Province has seen 59 people dead and four missing by Saturday since heavy rains began to hit many regions on July 3, which incurred 8.92 billion yuan in economic losses.Shaanxi Province has reported four deaths since Thursday when downpours began to hit 13 counties and forced the evacuation of 260 people.The Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River, China's longest, raised water discharge speed again Saturday to save dam space for another round of rainfall coming in two or three days.The Three Gorges navigation administration said Saturday that it will close the ship lock if the floods gush in at a speed of up to 45,000 cubic meters per second.At least 146 people had been confirmed dead and 40 are missing in continuous rainstorms and consequent floods, reportedly worst in years in some regions, according to the Civil Affairs Ministry.

HARARE, July 7 (Xinhua) --The eighth session of the Zimbabwe/ China joint permanent commission ended in Harare on Wednesday with a pledge by the two countries to widen and deepen economic cooperation.The two countries discussed ways of enhancing various cooperation projects already being implemented and new ones in the energy, agriculture, manufacturing, transport, tourism and water sectors.An agreement was also signed for China to provide 1.5 million U. S. dollars to the China-Zimbabwe Friendship Hospital in Mahusekwa, Mashonaland East Province, for medical equipment and drugs.The hospital is part of the several projects that include two primary schools and an agricultural demonstration center that China is constructing in Zimbabwe as part of the eight measures agreed to at the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit in 2006 in Beijing.Other support from China includes a 200 million U.S. dollars buyer's credit facility extended by the China Exim Bank for procurement of agricultural inputs to boost food production in Zimbabwe.Zimbabwean foreign minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwi praised China for setting a shining example to other world donors by honoring pledges it made to assist Zimbabwe under the Forum for China-Africa Cooperation.Mumbengegwi noted that under the eight measures enunciated by Chinese President Hu Jintao at the FOCAC heads of state summit in Beijing in 2006, projects earmarked for Zimbabwe are now at various stages of completion.The Chinese government has also dispatched 10 agricultural experts and 23 volunteers to buttress the cooperation."By successfully implementing these measures, China has set a shining example for other donors and international cooperating partners who do not always honor their commitments," Mumbengegwi said at the opening of the eight session.He said Zimbabwe is also willing to learn and benefit from China's experience and expertise in the economic sphere, which has transformed the country into a global economic powerhouse."Zimbabwe will, therefore, welcome Chinese investment and is ready to discuss during the joint commission specific projects in the energy, agriculture, manufacturing, transport, tourism and water sectors," he said.Mumbengegwi thanked China Exim Bank for extending the 200 million U.S. dollars buyer's credit loan repayment period from five to eight years, saying this would give Zimbabwe the breathing space to turn around its economy and enhance capacity to repay loans extended by China."The payment of the arrears and extension of the repayment period on the 200 million U.S. dollars buyer's credit loan have paved the way for increased cooperation between Zimbabwe and China, " he said.While hailing China as a good example of a reliable and dependent donor partner, Mumbengegwi said he hoped the Asian country will similarly implement new eight measures announced by Premier Wen Jiabao at the fourth ministerial conference of FOCAC held in Egypt last year.He said the projects that have been identified for implementation in Zimbabwe are in critical sectors of energy, water, health, education, agriculture and social infrastructure.

BEIJING, June 12 (Xinhua) -- China's top economic planner Saturday forecast a "mild" year-on-year rise in the consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, in June, resulting in an average CPI increase of around 2.6 percent in the first half.The projection by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) came one day after China released its latest economic data.The latest estimate was revised up from a 2.5-percent CPI rise the NDRC projected on May 18.China's CPI hit a 19-month high with a 3.1 percent year-on-year increase in May, surpassing the central government's targeted 3 percent annual inflation limit.During the January-May period, China's CPI rose 2.5 percent year on year.According to the NDRC's projection posted on its website, China's June CPI will dip slightly month on month, but still post a "mild year-on-year increase" due to the low comparison basis in the same month last year.The NDRC said positive factors for basic price stability were on the increase, citing sharp falls in international commodities prices, the government's macro control policies and a crack-down on farm produce speculation as well as a possible good grain harvest this summer.Sheng Laiyun, spokesman for the National Bureau of Statistics, said Friday at a press conference that China had the basics for keeping prices under control this year."Although China faces quite a lot of pressure, the 3-percent target (for the whole year) is still possible with effort," he said.

SHANGHAI, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- All entertainment activities at the Shanghai World Expo will be suspended Sunday in a show of respect for the victims of a massive mudslide in northwest China's Gansu Province.The Chinese national flags at the Expo Garden would fly at half-mast, and both the music broadcast at the opening and during the day would be stopped, the Shanghai Expo Bureau announced Saturday.Sun Weimin, the Expo Bureau's concierge director, said flags of the Bureau of International Expositions and the Shanghai World Expo would also fly at half-mast.Other Expo participants could decide for themselves whether to fly their flags at half-mast.The announcement was in line with that of the State Council, China's cabinet, which ordered suspension of all public entertainment and that Chinese flags fly at half-mast Sunday.The mudslide, which hit Zhouqu County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, on Aug. 8 has killed at least 1,239 people and an estimated 505 are still missing.According to the Expo Bureau, the Gansu Pavilion will hold a "solemn and simple" ceremony starting 10 a.m. Sunday. The big screen in the pavilion will broadcast pictures and videos of disaster relief in Zhouqu County.On Saturday night, a performance from Chongqing Municipality will include a tribute to victims of the Aug. 8 mudslide.Almost 100 performances and cultural activities scheduled for Sunday would be suspended. A performance by the Panama national troupe, scheduled Sunday morning at the Panama Pavilion, would be held on Saturday evening, a pavilion spokesman told Xinhua.Sunday also marked the National Pavilion Day for Equatorial Guinea. BEIJING, July 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao has said that the government should stick to the pro-active fiscal policy and moderately loose monetary policy in the second half of this year to ensure a stable and relatively rapid economic development.Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks at a symposium held in Beijing Tuesday, with attendance of people from the non-communists parties and the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, as well as celebrities without party affiliations.Other members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, including Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, also attended the symposium."We should strengthen our awareness of current risks and challenges the country is facing in economy, and firmly implement the central government's policies to ensure a stable and relatively rapid economic development," Hu said.Hu said the economy is developing in the right direction under the government's macroeconomic controls and the government would maintain the continuity and stability of its economic policies to make them more targeted and flexible according to new conditions.Further, more efforts should be made to strengthen economic forecasts and warning systems, as well as in the coordination of economic policies, Hu added.Hu asked for more efforts in the grain industry to achieve a good harvest this year and to improve control and relief work in combating floods and drought.
