JINAN, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Police in east China's Shandong Province said Saturday that one of the two killers who shot dead four policemen on Jan. 4 had also murdered another man before the gunfight.Liu Jianjun, 50, allegedly killed one man on Dec. 29 last year in Dezhou City of Shandong.Liu and his 52-year-old brother Liu Lumin shot at policemen who were investigating the Dec. 29 murder case in Tai'an City of the province on Jan. 4 .Three policemen were killed at the scene, and another died later in the hospital.After gunning down the officers, the two men fled the scene, hijacking four cars and shooting two drivers before their car collided with a police wagon.The gunmen, armed with a homemade pistol and a double-barreled shotgun, continued to fire after police had cornered them, injuring more policemen and civilians.Liu Lumin then shot and killed himself while Liu Jianjun was taken into custody.

BEIJING, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator, Wu Bangguo, met with his Maldivian counterpart Abdulla Shahid in Beijing Monday and called for closer relations between the two nations and the two parliaments.Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, said the growth of bilateral relations in recent years had yielded substantial benefits for the two peoples.Wu said China valued ties with the Maldives and was willing to maintain friendly exchanges and cooperation at all levels in an effort to expand political mutual trust and economic and trade cooperation in fields such as fisheries, tourism, and infrastructure construction.China would encourage Chinese companies to further participate in the Maldives' national construction and more Chinese tourists to visit the country, Wu said.Wu voiced his hope for stronger coordination between the two nations on international issues in order to build a relationship that would be a model for relations between big and small nations.Wu suggested the two legislatures promote dialogue and exchanges of views among members on successful experiences of national construction so as to inject new vitality to the development of bilateral relations.Shahid, speaker of the Maldivian People's Majlis, said the Maldivian people treasured the friendship of the Chinese people, and the rapid growth of the Chinese economy offered inspiration to developing countries, including the Maldives.Shahid pledged the Maldivian parliament would continue to play a constructive role in promoting bilateral relations.Shahid is leading a Maldivian parliamentary delegation to China at the invitation of Wu. BEIJING, Dec.24 (Xinhua) -- China will bring its overall money supply to a normal level with a range of policy tools next year as the government shifts monetary policy from "moderately loose" to "prudent", the central bank said Friday in a statement on its website, citing Deputy Governor Hu Xiaolian.Hu, a deputy governor of the People's Bank of China (PBOC), said at a meeting with bankers that China needs a shift to a prudent monetary policy to rein in rising consumer prices and curb asset bubbles.China is facing tremendous inflationary pressures, with the country' s consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, accelerated to a 28-month high in November of 5.1 percent."The major task for next year's monetary policy will be normalizing money supplies," she said, noting that the growth in money supply, mostly measured by M2, or the broad money supply, should be slowed from the pace during the implementation of a moderately loose policy.The Chinese government should maintain a "reasonable and moderate" credit growth next year that is in line with the country's goal in economic development and inflation control.New yuan-denominated loans in China stood at 7.45 trillion yuan in the first 11 months of this year - just shy of the government's full-year target of 7.5-trillion-yuan.Hu said with the global financial crisis having eased from its peak and China's stabilized economic momentum, the country is able to maintain a steady and relatively rapid economic growth with a prudent monetary policy.Hu stressed that China is facing pressure due to ample liquidity from home and abroad, and for the next phase, the Chinese government will work on liquidity controls with a range of policy tools, including open market operations and adjustment in interest rates and reserve requirement ratios.She highlighted the use of the differential reserve requirement ratio to supplement regular policy tools, which could guide banks to lend "reasonably, moderately and steadily" and boost risk controls in the financial system.China increased interest rates by 0.25 percentage points in October and hiked the bank reserve requirement ratio six times this year to 18.5 percent and 19 percent for some large commercial banks in a move to curb lending amid accelerating inflation.
