(CNN) -- Costco has built a cult following in the United States — now it's China's turn. The country's first Costco store is so popular that it had to shut down early on its first day because of too many shoppers.The retailer opened its first physical outlet in Shanghai on Tuesday morning, and it quickly got too crowded to stay open."The store has been clogged up with crowds," Costco said in a text message alert to its members in China. "To provide you with better shopping experience, Costco will suspend business in the afternoon. Please don't come."Police were deployed to restore order and manage traffic jams around the store, with law enforcement urging people to remain calm."For your safety, we hope citizens who want to go to Costco can maintain a rational attitude about consumption and avoid going out during rush hours. Those who have already gone there, you must follow orders," the Shanghai police said in a statement on its verified account on Chinese social network Weibo.The photos posted by police with the statement included one of a sign Costco put up outside the store, which read: "The parking lot is full. It takes three hours to wait."The company even issued an apology on social media for Chinese customers Wednesday, adding that it will put a cap on the number of customers allowed in the store to 2,000 and work with local police to "lessen the disturbance" to its neighbors.The road aheadWhile Costco has had an online presence in China for five years through a partnership with Chinese e-commerce firm Alibaba, the new brick-and-mortar store in Shanghai marks a significant investment.Costco's annual membership program, which accounts for the bulk of its profit, is also cheaper in China — it costs 299 yuan () compared to in the United States.But despite the early buzz around its Shanghai store, the US retailer will have to prove it can stick around for the long haul. It has to contend not only with global rivals like Walmart and big Chinese players like Alibaba and JD.com, but also with China's rapid economic changes and its growing online retail industry."There is big market potential for Costco in China, as its value for money strategy is attractive to many middle-class consumers," said Michelle Huang, an analyst at Rabobank in Shanghai."Whether Costco can succeed in the long term depends how well it can adapt to China's dynamic retail landscape," she added.Day one hypeWhile there are challenges on the horizon, the early hype around China's Costco stores is very real.Echo Zhou, a 28-year-old financial professional in Shanghai, said she arrived at 9:10 a.m., but didn't make it to the parking lot until an hour later and finally got into the store around 11 a.m."The surrounding roads were paralyzed. (CNN) -- Easter Island has long been a bucket list destination for travelers from around the world.But the very thing that keeps the island's economy going strong may be the thing that ultimately causes its ruin: mass tourism.Recently, a spate of bad behavior by travelers on Easter Island, which is famed for its enormous statues known as moai, has spurred new conversations about how visitors to the island should behave.Specifically, a new trend of photos where people make it look like they're "picking the noses" of the moai.Jo Anne Van Tilburg is an archaeologist, director of the Rock Art Archive at the University of California - Los Angeles and the Director of the Easter Island Statue Project.Although her life's work has been to protect and study the moai, these days she's focusing more on educating the hundreds of thousands of people who visit Easter Island on how to behave properly -- on a personal level as well as an environmental one."Because of the ubiquitous nature of photography in our community, people take the same picture repeatedly. Once one person picks a nose of the moai, you can be sure there will be multiple thousands [of photos], because people are lemmings," Von Tilburg tells CNN Travel.Two other examples of these "overdone" photos are people who make it look like they're holding the Great Pyramid of Giza in the palm of their hand and travelers making it look as if they're pushing the Leaning Tower of Pisa up to keep it from falling."There's nothing creative or interesting or humorous about it. The herd instinct is real."Van Tilburg first visited Easter Island, which is part of Polynesia but a territory of Chile, in 1981 as a doctoral student. The island did not get added to the UNESCO World Heritage list until 1995.Since then, she has returned regularly and noticed a shift in the kinds of people who choose to visit Rapa Nui National Park.In the 1980s, between 2,000 and 5,000 travelers per year came to Rapa Nui National Park. These days, it's north of 100,000 annually. Instead of two flights a week from Santiago, there are three a day.That's a huge burden on an island with only about 6,000 full-time residents, not to mention one where water and other natural resources are in limited supply and must be used carefully.Although visitors in the past were able to roam the national park freely and get close to all the moai, the crush of overtourism has come with restrictions and now travelers must stick to a prescribed path and only view a few of the statues.And bad behavior is sadly not a new invention. In 2008, a Finnish man who climbed one of the moai and chipped a piece of ear off was arrested, fined ,000 and ordered to leave the island and never return.Van Tilburg also feels that there has been a shift between people who were longtime fans of archeology and history who saved up to afford a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Easter Island, to people who are simply "collectors of places."In 2018, some controls were put into place to protect Easter Island. Now, foreigners and Chileans who are not Rapa Nui can only get 30-day travel visas instead of the previous 90-day ones.So, if you still want to visit Easter Island and want to show respect for the people and the land there, what can you do? Van Tilburg has a few suggestions."Read and prepare," she says simply. "Once you show your guide you have a serious interest, they will take you seriously. Make your questions deserving of answers."And studying up on Easter Island also means recognizing that it's a living site, not a museum."There are 1,000 statues and there are 5,000 people," Van Tilburg says. NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) -- Three people were injured after a car slammed into a National City restaurant Tuesday afternoon. The crash happened on the 1000 block of Highland Avenue in National City at the Pho 7 Cow restaurant around 2 p.m.An employee of a nearby jewelry store said scene was chaotic, describing the vehicle as going all the way into the building. RELATED: Driver crashes car into National City bar The owner of the restaurant says two customers and an employee were injured in the crash. Their condition is unknown at this time, but a witness said they didn’t appear serious. Roughly 20 people were eating lunch when the car crashed into the front of the restaurant, according to the owner. Surveillance video from inside the restaurant shows the car plow through the front and into a large aquarium near the door. 10News learned all of the fish inside the aquarium died.The owner said the woman driving the car may have accidentally pushed the gas instead of the brake. Inspectors from the city and fire department arrived shortly after the crash to check out the building. The owner was told the structure is sound.
