SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego is one of the best places in the country for veterans to live, according to a new WalletHub report. According to the site, San Diego is the 15th best place in the nation for veterans to live in 2019. Out of 100 other U.S. cities, San Diego ranks 47th for employment, 2nd for quality of life and 35th for health. So where are the best places in the U.S. for veterans in 2019? According to WalletHub, Tampa, Austin, Orlando, Raleigh and Scottsdale all took top spots. Indianapolis, Memphis, Jersey City, Newark and Detroit all placed at the bottom of this year’s list. Long Beach and San Francisco are also two cities with some of the most homeless veterans per veteran population, according to the site. If you would like to freeze avocado halves, remove the peel and pit, according to California Avocado. Brush the halves with lemon juice and wrap tightly in plastic wrap so no air gets through. Put the halves into a freezer-safe bag and press out the air. Although the wrapping method is effective, Cook’s Illustrated reports the texture may change when you thaw the avocado. You may want to puree before freezing. Put your cut avocado into a blender and add one tablespoon of lemon or lime juice to avoid browning, HGTV suggests. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced Wednesday that a record number of potholes have been filled in the city in 2019.An average year sees 32,000 potholes filled, but Wednesday crews filled pothole number 49,000. This year the city tripled the number of pothole repair teams and extended their hours to include nights and weekends. Matt Sinclaire lives on Georgia Street in University Heights, however, and showed 10News a doorknob flier that was left at homes on his block last week announcing that street would be repaved this week. Curiously, the no parking signs were pulled Friday, he says, and the job, he was told, was canceled. Wednesday, that announcement from the mayor was held, and two potholes were repaired directly in front of Sinclaire's home. "This whole thing pissed me off," says Sinclaire. "We waited this long and finally we were going to see our street paved... but we have a nice shiny little black square that's going to probably be good for the next year." Deputy City of San Diego Chief Operating Officer Johnnie Perkins told 10News the project was postponed, not canceled, due to the subcontractor's staffing issues. There was a miscommunication and the contractor gave neighbors bad information about a cancellation, Perkins said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego court records show a history of legal disputes with Clark Construction Group, the company that employed the worker who died in yesterday’s accident on a construction site at UC San Diego.10News found a court complaint over the 2017 death of a driller. Frederick Von Kahl's family sued Clark Construction and other defendants for negligence, alleging they created a dangerous workplace at a San Ysidro job site which reportedly caused a valve to strike Kahl in his chest.Friday afternoon, Kahl family attorney Benjamin Bunn said that the case just recently moved into a settlement agreement. He said that Kahl had been married for 40 years.The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) website revealed that it issued violations and a ,260 fine. In another negligence case, a worker sued Clark Construction Group and other defendants over a 2010 accident at the San Diego Marriot & Marina Hotel, claiming that a large piece of concrete dropped through a roof and struck a worker's body and right arm. The case was later dismissed.There's also a negligence suit that settled after a 91-year-old woman reportedly suffered broken bones from a fall while walking by a downtown construction site that she claimed was unsafe.The Division of Occupational Safety and Health of California (Cal/OSHA) has done at least 10 investigations into the company in the last 10 years. A Cal/OSHA spokesperson said Thursday that most of the investigations involve complaints from workers reporting unsafe conditions, with no violations issued. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police are investigating Monday a woman's report that she was held against her will in Rancho Pe?asquitos.A woman arrived at a home on Caminito Cuadro at 10:45 a.m. and said she had been kidnapped and held captive in a neighboring house, police said. The location is in a residential area near SR-56 and Carmel Mountain Road.Neighbors told 10News they saw a naked woman covered in a bedsheet leave the home.The woman was taken to a nearby police station for an interview, police said.10News is monitoring developments in this story. 569
