COVINGTON, Ky. -- Every sister who takes her vows at St. Walburg Monastery of Covington, Kentucky, receives a gold ring symbolizing her commitment to the Order of Saint Benedict and its principles: Humility, reverence to God and generosity toward the sick, old and poor. When she dies, her ring is placed in a velvet-lined memorial box alongside dozens of others to commemorate her dedication to the church.During the monastery's entire 159 years of existence, Sister Aileen Bankemper said, no one has ever dared to steal one. On Monday, someone stole more than 100. "There was a sense of just emptiness," Bankemper, the prioress, said of discovering the burglary. "There was just like, 'Why would somebody do that?' We're a generous community. It somebody had a need for money, they could have come to us, and we certainly would have listened to what their need was."The rings disappeared while the sisters were attending a memorial service for 88-year-old Sister Cecilia Dagle, who was known during her time at the monastery for her kind spirit and habit of writing birthday cards for each of her fellow sisters. When they returned, someone had stolen "a significant amount of money" and more than a century of history.Sister Nancy Kordenbrock said police believe the person who stole the rings, which were 14 karat gold, would have done so intending to pawn them for cash. The collection could represent a tidy sum, but she and the rest of the order don't care about the financial loss. They just want the mementos of their friends and predecessors back where they belong."Even if they just put it by the back door or by the porch, give it to someone and say, 'Put this here' or something, we would be so glad," she said. "It would just mean a lot to us to have them back."  1799

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The national “If You Give a Child a Book …” campaign will distribute over 165,000 books to kids in low-income households across the country this school year after raising 5,369 during its annual fundraiser this fall. The childhood literacy campaign is led by the Scripps Howard Foundation and supported by employees of The E.W. Scripps Company, members of the Scripps family and communities where Scripps does business in more than 40 markets across the country. The campaign helps Scripps fulfill its vision of creating a better-informed world.Beginning January 2021, each Scripps TV station and national brand will partner with schools and nonprofits in their communities to ensure the books go to children who need them most, whether they are learning in a traditional classroom setting, remotely or a hybrid of the two.Since the campaign’s first year in 2016, more than 352,000 new books have been donated to children facing poverty in communities served by Scripps businesses. With the additional funds raised through this year’s campaign, the total number of distributed books will surpass 500,000.The first ,000 raised during the campaign was matched through a generous gift from The Kroger Co. Foundation. Additionally, members of the Scripps family matched Scripps employee gifts toward the campaign and granted each Scripps station a match of ,000 toward their local campaigns.“Having access to books at an early age is an important predictor of a child’s success. In fact, kids who learn to read are more likely to graduate, to vote and to be civically involved,” said Liz Carter, president and CEO of the Scripps Howard Foundation. “That is why the need this year is particularly urgent, with the pandemic affecting access to books for many families. We are blown away by the generosity shown during such a historic year – it’s a true testament to Scripps’ commitment to the communities they serve daily and the collective impact we can achieve for the future of thousands of kids across the country.”Scripps businesses place high priority on giving back to their local communities, including raising more than million for food banks across the country in June.Learn more and donate at ifyougiveabook.com. 2254

Crews at a construction site in Denver, Colorado, are working around the clock, trying to keep up with an increased demand by building more housing.“It’s getting really interesting out there isn’t it,” said Stephen Myers CEO at Thrive Home Builders.Myers says though the real estate market is booming across the country, an increased cost of lumber is cutting into builders’ profits.“The increase is ,000 to 12,000 per house,” he said of his current project. “And we’re concerned about the ultimate price impact for our buyers.”According to the National Association of Home Builders, the price of lumber has increased by 173% since mid-April to an all-time high in August.“Without a doubt, the housing prices will go up because lumber is a very important input of houses,” said Kishore Kulkarni, Ph.D. a professor of economics at MSU Denver.Kulkarni says there’s multiple reasons why lumber prices have skyrocketed during the last few months, including higher transportation costs, some lumber mills shutting down, low interest rates and more people looking to purchase homes during the pandemic.“The supply of lumber is having a lot of bottlenecks because of COVID-19,” he said,This is pushing up the price of a typical new home by more than ,000, according to the National Association of Home Builders.Back on the job site, Myers’ team is pulling out the blueprints and looking for ways to offset higher lumber prices.“Hopefully the lumber supply can rise to the occasion to meet the increased demand,” Myers said. While crews continue to frame new houses, experts predict the cost of lumber won’t level. So, for now, prices will continue going through the roof. 1676
