MARLBOROUGH, Mass. – On an old road in rural Massachusetts, comes a new technology that could change everything about drunk driving – by eliminating it. “Clearly it's a big problem and we need to do something about it,” said Dr. Bud Zaouk, president of KEA Technologies. The company is currently testing alcohol sensors in cars that would prevent a drunk driver from hitting the road. “It's a public-private partnership between the auto industry, all 17 automakers in the U.S. and the federal government,” Dr. Zaouk said. How does it work? There are two technologies: one that measures the level of alcohol in someone’s breath, similar to a breathalyzer. Another device detects alcohol through a touch of fingertips. The technology would allow you to start a vehicle, but if alcohol is detected, that vehicle would not move at all. Outside of the lab, the real-world testing involves using passengers with varying levels of intoxication. It’s more complicated than just getting someone drunk on vodka. “A lot of science actually goes behind that. So, we have something that we call a ‘drink master,’” said Dr. Kelly Ozdemir, director of applied sciences at KEA Technologies. “We can calculate milliliters how much alcohol to give for them.” Kristin Davis is with Mothers Against Drunk Driving. A few days before Christmas 2016, a drunk driver blew through a red light at 55 miles per hour, hitting Kristin’s car. She was 7 months pregnant at the time.“Every time I got in my car after the crash, I would replay it in my head,” she said. “I had to be cut out and I didn't know whether or not my baby had survived until they could get me to the hospital.” Her baby did survive, but she hopes the alcohol sensors can help others avoid the ordeal she went through. “I hope to see it one day as standard as seatbelts and airbags and backup cameras,” Davis said. That day might be coming sooner than you think. A bipartisan bill making its way through Congress, could make alcohol sensors standard in all new vehicles, possibly within the next four years. “This technology can't be optional,” said J.T. Griffin, chief government affairs officer for MADD. “It needs to be in everybody's car for it to be effective.” Back in Massachusetts, the testing to make the alcohol sensors road ready keeps going, in the effort to save the more than 10,000 people killed each year in drunk driving crashes. “We need to make sure that this doesn't happen on our roads and make sure that we're able to save these lives,” Dr. Zaouk said.The first vehicles to see these alcohol sensors installed will likely be government fleet vehicles used by local, state and federal agencies. A conservative legal group has filed a lawsuit against Maricopa County claiming that votes were disqualified because some people were given a Sharpie to fill out their ballots.The legal group, Public Interest Legal Foundation, says that the ink from the Sharpies bled through the ballots causing them not to be counted.The Maricopa County Recorder’s Office and the Secretary of State, however, both say concerns that surfaced Wednesday over the use of Sharpies are unfounded. At the age of 63, Medina wants to focus on planning for her retirement. After getting divorced 20 years ago, Medina went back to school, hoping a college degree would improve her job prospects. While most people think student loan debt is a young person's problem, more than 3 million people over 60 are paying off college loans. In the coming weeks, Senator Elizabeth Warren and Representative James Clyburn will introduce legislation to eliminate up to ,000 in student loan debt for 42 million Americans. Daisy Muniz works at the same elementary school she attended while growing up in Reedley, California. "I moved here from Mexico when I was five, and I've been in Reedley all my life," said Muniz. Reedley is a rural town in central California that has seen better days. Its unemployment level is more than triple the national average, but it's trying to flip the switch on its economic woes and take the city to new heights. "When I came on board, we actually were going through a pretty bad cycle," said city manager Nicole Ziba. "Had an unemployment rate of 33 percent. That means 1 out of every 3 people that you would run into was out of a job and looking for one. That's a pretty dire situation economically." The town is trying to parlay its history with aviation into a bright future above the clouds. "The reason we have a shortage is that the cost of getting your pilot certificate is so high that it prices a lot of people out of that market or out of even considering that career path," said Joseph Oldham, with the San Joaquin Valley Clean Transportation Center. It starts with their best and brightest. Jefferson Elementary has a new state of the art flight simulator, courtesy of Boeing. It's part of the company’s plan to inspire a new generation of pilots. Rose, a student at the elementary school, doesn't have her sights set on staying in Reedley forever. "Paris, Rome, Washington DC and Mexico," said Rose on places she'd live. If she decides to cash in on her new found skills, she won't have to leave the city limits to train. "They teach us ground school lessons, so everything from we need to learn about the physics of flying, to learning airports, airport diagrams, and then they teach us as well in the simulator class how to actually fly the plane. That gets us ready for when we go to the actual airport and fly the real thing," said Benjamin Jones, a student in the Reedley College. Reedley College has a flight training program offering a less expensive option for prospective aviators. It's all part of the city’s bid to become a pilot pipeline. "You hear a lot of kids, 'I want to be a fireman. I want to be a policeman.' Now that this is here, now they have, 'Oh, we could fly planes? we could be pilots?'" said Muniz. But even if the students don't become pilots, just having the simulator around presents new horizons. "It doesn't just open up the possibility for this, but now it's like opening their minds to, what else? What's out there? What more can I do?," said Muniz. 2528
