NEW YORK, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Tuesday expressed hope that the four BRIC countries -- China, India, Russia and Brazil -- will further strengthen coordination and cooperation.Yang made the appeal as he chaired a meeting of BRIC foreign ministers in New York.Yang told his BRIC counterparts that the four countries have constantly enhanced their cooperation in a more defined direction and within an increasingly mature mechanism, thus increasing their influences in the international arena.He hoped that the four countries will further strengthen coordination, build a solid foundation for cooperation and broaden areas of cooperation so as to uphold the common interests of developing countries.The foreign ministers held discussions over issues including cooperation among emerging market countries, the reform of the international financial architecture and global economic governance as well as international development cooperation.The meeting was held on the sidelines of the UN high-level meeting on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which began Monday.On Tuesday, the Chinese foreign minister also held a bilateral meeting with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov.Yang told Lavrov that frequent contacts at high-levels between China and Russia have fully demonstrated the high standard of Sino- Russian strategic partnership of cooperation.China hopes both sides will further enhance communication and coordination so as to elevate their cooperation in all areas to a new level, Yang said.Lavrov said that Russia is willing to work with China to deepen cooperation in all areas and strengthen coordination and cooperation on major international and regional issues so as to continue to move forward bilateral relations.

BEIJING, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese trawler captain Zhan Qixiong arrived safely in Fuzhou, capital of southeast China's Fujian Province early Saturday morning by a chartered plane after he was illegally detained by Japan.Crowds gathered at the captain's home in Gangfu Village, Jinjiang City of Fujian Province while the his wife and son left for Fuzhou, the provincial capital for family reunion."I was so happy when I was told that my brother would soon return," said Zhan Yuehong, a sister of the captain. "After all these sleepless nights, I can finally have a good rest now."The sister said she is preparing a bowl of noodles with eggs for her brother, a local tradition to keep off bad spirits when a family member returns from an ordeal.Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement after the captain's return that the Chinese government expressed "strong protest" against Japan, whose detention, investigation or any form of judiciary measures for the Chinese trawler and fishermen are unlawful and invalid.China asked the Japanese side to make apology and compensation for the incident, the statement said. It also said the two sides should resolve the problems of Sino-Japanese relationship through dialogue and consultation.On Sept. 7, two Japan Coast Guard patrol ships and a Chinese trawler collided in waters off China's Diaoyu Islands. On the following day, the Japan Coast Guard illegally seized the Chinese trawler and detained the trawler's captain and 14 fishermen on board, drawing strong protests from the Chinese government and people.The Japanese side freed the 14 fishermen and the boat on Sept. 15, but continued to hold the captain. A Japanese court announced on Sept. 19 the trawler captain's detention would be extended by another 10 days.China has repeatedly urged Japan to unconditionally release the Chinese captain to avoid further damaging bilateral ties, warning "strong counter measures" if Japan failed to do so.China has already halted bilateral exchanges at and above the provincial and ministerial levels. It has also suspended contact with Japan on the issue of expanding aviation rights between the two countries."The Japanese side bears full responsibility for the current situation,and it shall bear all the consequences that arise," Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said when meeting with Chinese nationals and Chinese Americans in the United States.In the mean time, the number of Chinese citizens traveling to Japan as tourists has already declined. VIENNA, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- The six-party talks is the fundamental way of solving the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue, a senior Chinese diplomat told the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) directors meeting here Tuesday.From the long term perspective, the fundamental way of settling regional contradictions and disputes is through continuing to advance the six-party talks, achieving the conversion of the mechanism of armistice to peace, and finally establishing a security system of peace in Northeast Asia, said Hu Xiaodi, China' s permanent representative and ambassador to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna.To this end, China hopes that no matter how situation changes, parties concerned should fix their attention on the overall situation, exercise restraint, resume direct dialogues and talks at an early date, Hu said, adding all sides should make joint efforts to achieve an early resumption of the six-party talks, and continue to advance the process of denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.Hu noted that the situation on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia is still sensitive and complex, with the six-party talks stalled.The current situation once again shows that severe lack of mutual trust among parties concerned is the root cause of both frequent tensions in northeast Asia and difficulties for the six- party talks. BEIJING, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Sunday arrived in northeast China's port city of Dalian, the first stop of his three-day China visit.This is Medvedev's second state visit to the country since he assumed presidency in May 2008.On Sunday, Medvedev will visit a memorial to the Soviet Union war dead and meet with veteran Chinese and Russian soldiers who participated in China's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (1937-1945).During his stay in the city, the Russian president will stop by the Dalian Institute of Foreign Languages, where he will have brief discussions with Russian language professors and students. He is also slated for a meeting with leaders of northeast China's Liaoning Province.More important meetings are scheduled for Monday when the Russian leader visits Beijing. He will hold talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao and call on other Chinese leaders, including top legislator Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao.On Monday evening, Medvedev will travel to east China's metropolis of Shanghai, where, on the next day, he will meet with Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping and attend events marking the Russia Day at the ongoing World Expo, which runs from May 1 to Oct. 31.
