Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon has pulled out of a job as a correspondent for NBC at the Winter Games in South Korea.News broke earlier Sunday that Rippon, one of the first openly gay U.S. athletes to compete at the Olympics, was being hired to work on TV, digital and social media for NBC for the remainder of the Games in Pyeongchang.NBC tweeted out the news Sunday morning, welcoming the 28-year-old bronze medalist to its team. But Rippon said hours later that although he was "so flattered" by NBC's offer, he decided against the move because it would mean leaving his U.S. teammates and the Olympic Village."It's so important to me, you know, I worked so hard to be on this Olympic team, and my teammates and my friends were there for me during my events, and that meant so much to me, that I really feel like I need to be there for them during their events," he said on NBCSN.NBC's article online about Rippon becoming one of its correspondents now redirects readers to his Olympic profile page.Rippon later suggested he only learned about the network's plans to hire him from social media."I actually found everything out about the offer via twitter HAHA," he tweeted. "2018 is wild girl."Rippon, who won bronze in the team skating event, has become one of the highest-profile athletes at the Games. He made headlines for his criticisms of Vice President Mike Pence, and the politician's track record on LGBTQ issues. Rippon turned down a meeting with Pence, according to a USA Today report, and has said he will not visit the White House for a celebration. As governor of Indiana, Pence signed the state's Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which allowed businesses to refuse service to gay and lesbian customers. Pence later signed an amendment that prevented the law from discriminating against LGBTQ customers.Pence attended the Games in Pyeongchang and tweeted at Rippon saying that "we are FOR YOU. Don't let fake news distract you. I am proud of you and ALL OF OUR GREAT athletes and my only hope for you and all of #TeamUSA is to bring home the gold."After the Opening Ceremony at the Games, Rippon appeared in a photo posted to Instagram by slopestyle skier Gus Kenworthy. Kenworthy and Rippon are the first openly gay U.S. athletes to compete in the Games. The photo showed them hugging with the caption: "I feel incredibly honored to be here in Korea competing for the US and I'm so proud to be representing the LGBTQ community alongside this amazing guy! Eat your heart out, Pence."Rippon told reporters at a press conference in Pyeongchang, South Korea on Tuesday that he "can't tone it down. I'm being me and being myself."He added: "As an athlete I use this platform to my advantage. I think it's giving my skating a greater purpose."Rippon was an alternate for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and didn't make the team for the 2014 Sochi Olympics. His rise to stardom during Pyeongchang has also been bolstered by his personality and social media presence. He's received tweets of support from the likes of Britney Spears, Reese Witherspoon and Jessica Chastain.NBC is known for hiring Olympians to add to its coverage. This year of the record 89 correspondents NBC has covering the Games, at least 18 are former Olympians. Some of the big names on NBC's roster are Johnny Weir, Tara Lipinski, Bode Miller, Kristi Yamaguchi and Apolo Ohno.  3370

On Saturday, a gunman stormed the Tree of Life Synagogue, killing 11 people in what the ADL called the deadliest attack ever on Jews in the United States. The horrific, hate-filled minutes were a raw manifestation of anger, division and anti-Semitism.But the response has been the opposite as faiths and cultures came together in grief and solidarity.Crowdfunding campaign "Muslims Unite for Pittsburgh Synagogue" has raised more than 5,000 to help the shooting victims."We wish to respond to evil with good, as our faith instructs us, and send a powerful message of compassion through action," the donation page says. The campaign is organized by the Muslim-American non-profits CelebrateMercy and MPower Change. It's hosted by LaunchGood, an online crowdfunding platform for the Muslim community. The campaign page invites all faiths to contribute, and the Islamic Center of Pittsburgh will work directly with the Tree of Life Synagogue to distribute the funds to the injured victims and grieving families."The Pittsburgh community is our family; what happens to one of us, is felt by us all." The Islamic Center of Pittsburgh said in a statement on this attack. This unifying sentiment is one of the fundraiser's main tenets."Through this campaign, we hope to send a united message from the Jewish and Muslim communities that there is no place for this type of hate and violence in America." the LaunchGood page says.  1458

ORLANDO, Fla. — As the coronavirus pandemic is expected to continue through the rest of the 2020 calendar year, and possibly beyond, Disney announced it is calling off some of its popular holiday traditions this winter.Disney said on its park blog that Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party and Candlelight Processional at EPCOT will both be called off amid coronavirus concerns. While Disney vows to keep its holiday spirits at the resort hotels with Christmas trees and other festive decorations, the gingerbread displays will not make a comeback this winter due to social distancing guidelines."We know these experiences are a cherished part of holiday traditions that will be missed by guests and cast members alike, but we’re glad to be able to bring holiday magic in other creative ways," Disney's communication team said in its park blog. However, the good news for families planning to celebrate the holidays at Disney is that Santa Claus, elves, reindeer and the gingerbread men will make their usual appearances at the theme parks this holiday season. You can click here for more information on how Disney plans to celebrate the holidays. This story was originally published by KJ Hiramoto at WFTS. 1210

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Facebook has banned an extremist anti-government network loosely associated with the broader “boogaloo” movement, a slang term that supporters use to refer to a second Civil War or a collapse of civilization. But the platform didn’t try to name the group, underscoring the difficulty of grappling with an amorphous network linked to a string of domestic terror plots that appears to obfuscate its existence.Facebook designated the movement as a dangerous organization similar to the Islamic State group and white supremacists, both of which it already bans.Facebook says it is removing groups, accounts and pages when they have a “clear connection to violence or a credible threat to public safety.” The company says it has removed 220 Facebook accounts, 95 Instagram accounts and 106 groups that comprise the “US-based anti-government network.”Additionally, Facebook says it has removed 400 groups and over 100 other pages for violating its “Dangerous Individuals and Organizations” policy, because they hosted similar content as the violent network.“So long as violent movements operate in the physical world, they will seek to exploit digital platforms,” wrote Facebook. “We are stepping up our efforts against this network and know there is still more to do.” 1293

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - After years of planning, the City of Oceanside is now weeks away from breaking ground on a project that will create a new source of drinking water. Called Pure Water Oceanside, recycled water with go through a rigorous purification system, ultimately supplying 32 percent of the city's water supply needs. "It's more sustainable and will help us stabilize rates moving forward," said Sarah Davis, a Senior Environmental Specialist with the City of Oceanside.Right now, the city is offering tours of its water plant and educating residents on Pure Water Oceanside. LIFE IN OCEANSIDE:Oceanside's brewery scene helps spur city's growthFrom 'Ocean Side' to region's third-largest city5 places to spend the day in Oceanside"Oh, the town is growing, yes. It seems like every open space I see in Oceanside is going to have a house on it," said Tad Shiner, an Oceanside resident of eight years. On Shiner's mind is whether the new source of water will be safe and how the project will impact resident's bills. Similar projects have gained headlines because water from your sinks and toilets is recycled into drinking water.Davis wants to assure the public that Pure Water Oceanside will yield high-quality drinking water that is clean, safe, drought-proof, and environmentally sound. "Currently, Oceanside imports the majority of our water from Northern California or the Colorado River, so that comes from hundreds of miles away, and takes a lot of energy to transport. Also, the cost of that continues to increase," said Davis. The process uses state-of-the-art water purification steps that replicate and accelerate nature's natural recycling process:Microfiltration - Filters remove bacteria and suspended solids from reclaimed waterReverse Osmosis - Ultra-fine filters remove salt, viruses, bacteria, pharmaceuticals and chemicalsUltraviolet Light and Advanced Oxidation - The final polishing step neutralizes any remaining substancesInjection - Minerals are added before the water is injected into the Mission BasinTreatment - Water is extracted from the aquifer and treated again at the city’s Mission Basin Groundwater Purification FacilityDelivery - The water is distributed to customersThe city plans to break ground in January 2020 and the facility is expected to be complete in 2022.To learn more about the project or sign up for a tour, click here. 2389
