Thomas Magnum has lost his sidekick. John Hillerman, the actor who played Magnum P.I. sidekick Jonathan Higgins, died on Thursday at the age of 84. According to TMZ, he died at his home in Houston. To watch YouTube videos, they’ve never seen anything like that," said Connie Nelson, franchise owner of Visiting Angels.Nelson works with the elderly, who need assistance in their homes. She says introducing this generation that’s used to delayed gratification to technology is playing a huge role in helping them get through this pandemic."I think the biggest surprise for them is how instant it is. They’re used to a phone call, somebody has to answer. This is just instant. You text a grandchild and they text you immediately," said Nelson.The technology Nelson’s at-home caregivers are teaching the senior citizens ranges from texting to ordering groceries from Alexa."They’re sitting there all day, waiting. They’re waiting for a phone call or they’re waiting for a visit, and sometimes they don’t come because everybody’s busy. But once you hand technology to them, the response is there," said Nelson.And while most of this education is for entertainment purposes, Nelson says they’re walking patients through telemedicine in hopes they’ll continue using it in the future."I think at first they’re a little standoffish. Like, ‘No, he has to see me, touch me. He has to check my ears.’ And, if they can get past that, they won’t get the physical exam, but you’ll get that face-to-face where you can actually tell him what’s going on. Jamie Gallegos says, her phone is her “contact to the world.” She always has her phone on her and when she doesn’t she has anxiety.Dr. Patrick Fehling says, it’s easy to get addicted to your smartphone, because it has so much to offer.Dr. Fehling compares smartphones to drugs like Xanax and Heroine. “They are incredibly responsive and you get immediate gratification and that seems to be very connected to addiction as a whole. Most of the drugs that are the most addicted drugs of abuse tend to be incredibly fast on and fast off.” Gallegos uses her phone throughout the entire day. She’s guilty of checking her phone, even if it never goes off. But, how do you know you’re addicted to your smartphone?Dr. Fehling says to look out for signs like you are “on your phone all the time getting into arguments with your spouse, getting into fights with your family, and everyone is asking why can’t you be more engaged or pay more attention to them instead of being distracted by these mobile devices.”If these situations aren’t happening in your life, Dr. Fehling says symptoms come along with addiction too. For example, “anxiety, symptoms of depression or sadness, irritability or sleep problems. If you get up at night needing to check your phone.”If you are addicted to your phone and are looking to disconnect without having major withdrawals, Dr. Fehling says there are simple tasks you can do to help. “When you get into your car put your phone inside your glove compartment. You can’t actually look at it, you are not drawn to it. When you plug in your phone at night, put it on a different floor of your house.”It’s best to set concrete boundaries for yourself and your phone usage. This week, JetBlue became the latest airline to say it will keep middle seats blocked longer. It will happen through September 8.Delta and Southwest are blocking middle seats through the end of September. But other major airlines, including United and American, say they'll be filling flights.An MIT professor Arnold Barnett is laying out what your risk is of catching the coronavirus if the middle seat is filled.Barnett looked at research on the transmission of the virus and the number of cases. He assumed everyone would have a mask and that the mask is 82% effective. He found 1 in 4,300 is your risk of getting COVID-19 on a full plane. It's 1 in 7,700 if the airline keeps the middle seats open.“The takeaway is there is a difference,” said Barnett. “I think that it is statistically safer if the middle seat is kept open. The difference is measurable and perceptible, and the question then is if the risk is incredibly low, who cares if it gets cut in half. Then the issue is do people really think this level of risk is incredibly low and individuals will have to make that judgment.”The probabilities are based on numbers from late June. With more new cases, it’s likely there is a greater chance now.Barnett doesn't agree with airline arguments that even if they don't fill the middle seat, passengers still won't be 6 feet away from each other.“They seem to say, look if you're within 6 feet, it doesn't matter if it's 1 foot or 5 feet, you're the same level of risk,” said Barnett. “This bears no relationship to the literature or to physics. I mean the closer you are statistically, the greater is the risk.”Barnett is submitting his research this week to be peer reviewed, but says he wanted to make it available publicly before then, so people could have the information.Lawmakers, passengers and flight crew unions have called on the FAA to set policies for containing the virus.The government says it is advising the airlines that even if it's not passing new regulations.Airlines for America, which represents the major carriers, says mandates aren't necessary, because airlines have already taken extraordinary measures. 2148
