SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two competing plans are on the table to redevelop the Tailgate Lot a block from Petco Park into a mixed-use area with park space, retail and office, and housing.The City of San Diego has launched a virtual open house for residents to provide feedback on two plans to develop the Tailgate Lot in a mixed-use area. Residents have through Friday, Sept. 4, 2020, to give their feedback.One of the plans was developed by Brookfield Properties and the other between the San Diego Padres, Tishman Speyer, and Ascendent Capital. Both plans call for a combination of office, retail, and residential space and open park space and parking.Brookfield Properties' plan calls for about 1.2 million square feet of mixed-use office and retail space, about 1,200 residential units, and 1.1 acres of park and community space. The plan also highlights developing a tailgate park, "bazaar" marketplace, and a gateway to public transit.Brookfield's plan also includes a culinary incubator for restaurant startups and makers, including 15 restaurant spaces and a community kitchen.The plan by the Padres, Tishman Speyer, and Ascendent Capital also features about 1.35 million square feet of office space, 612 market rate and affordable housing units, 236,000 square feet of open space, and 1,600-space parking garage for games and ballpark events.The parking garage would also include a multi-use field on the roof for recreational activities. The plan says that the spaces will be shared with tenants when not in use for games and events.The Tailgate Lot property includes 15 parcels of land, or about 5.25 net acres, between K Street and Imperial Avenue and 12th Ave. and 14th St. The parking is currently leased to the Padres.The city's plan is to submit an Exclusive Negotiating Agreement to City Council in October or November 2020. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Video taken Tuesday shows people climbing on top of the border fence near Friendship Park as the migrant caravan approaches.According to a Border Patrol spokesperson, agents are keeping watch on the U.S. side of the park, but aren’t aware of anyone climbing all the way over onto the U.S. side of the beach.Border Patrol says it’s technically not legal for people to sit on the fence because it’s on U.S. soil, but no arrests are being made at this time.RELATED: CBP closing lanes in San Ysidro, Otay Mesa as migrant caravan approachesIt’s unclear whether or not the group is with the migrant caravan.The incident comes as U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced the closure of several northbound border lanes in San Ysidro and Otay Mesa.The closures are expected to cause delays. 818

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In honor of Veterans Day, dozens of volunteers found a way to give back to current active duty military service members.The organization Waves of Appreciation packed thousands of "Appreciation bags" filled with snacks for service members traveling through San Diego during the holidays.Volunteers fill the bags assembly line style. This program started in 2011 when the founder of the event saw a military service member traveling alone during the holidays, exhausted and hungry. Since then volunteers have handed out more than 24,000 bags.Waves of Appreciation is looking for volunteers to pass out the goodie bags at Lindbergh Field in December in time for the holidays.
