SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Saturday morning, coffee enthusiasts will sample a rare coffee grown for the first time right here in San Diego. The geisha coffee bean, generally grown in Panama, is a rare coffee bean known for its unique flavor profile. The variety grown in Oceanside has tasting notes of jasmine tea, honey, key lime pie, and elderflower, according to Bird Rock Coffee Roasters, who are offering the coffee.?The bean's exclusivity is also reflected in its price. Bird Rock will sell pour over cups Saturday at 10 a.m. at all locations for each. It can also be purchased online, starting at 0 for 4 ounces.RELATED: Coffee grown in San Diego? Local farm preps for first ever harvestThe San Diego-grown variety was grown at Mraz Family Farms, created by Grammy-winning singer Jason Mraz. Mraz first planted coffee at the Oceanside farm in 2015, where 2,800 coffee trees offer other varieties like Caturra Amarillo, Caturra Rojo, Catuai Rojo, Catisic, Cuicateco, Laurina, Mundo Novo, Pacamara, Pacas, Puerto Rico, and Tekisic.Mraz will reportedly stop by one of Bird Rock's locations as well to celebrate the Geisha bean release. The farm has teamed with Frinj Coffee to offer the beans. Jay Ruskey, CEO of Frinj, says he's hopeful Southern California becomes a new powerhouse for coffee growers.“We would love to see another 50,000 coffee plants here in Southern California this year, and expand to millions in the next ten years,” said Ruskey. “I see a rapid expansion I think it's going to be huge [in San Diego]." 1532

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Saturday, Americans mourned the death of Congressman John Lewis after his battle with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.Lewis, a Democrat who represented Georgia's 5th Congressional district for 17 years, was part of the "Big Six" civil rights activists who organized the March on Washington in 1963.In San Diego, the civil rights icon is also remembered through two unique ties.RELATED: U.S. flags at half-staff in memory of Rep. John LewisA little more than a year ago, Lewis was donning protective gear to weld his initials into his namesake ship at a San Diego shipyard. On May 13, 2019, Lewis pulled welding gloves over his hands to fuse his initials into the keel plate of the USNS John Lewis at the General Dynamics Shipyard — the lead ship in a class of oiler vessels.Consistent with his commitment to non-violence, the ships will be non-combat vessels but play a vital role in refueling other ships at sea."For the U.S. Navy and former Secretary Ray Mabus to see fit to honor me in this way is unreal and almost unimaginable," Lewis said in a statement last year. "I only try to do what is fair, what is right, and what is just and get in what I call good trouble, necessary trouble. This class of ships pays tribute to the powerful contribution each and every participant in the struggle for civil rights and social justice has made to help build a true democracy in America."The lead ship is set to launch in December 2020, according to General Dynamics.RELATED: Civil rights leader and congressman John Lewis has died at 80At San Diego's pop culture event of the year, Lewis made himself a regular. The civil rights icon introduced San Diego Comic-Con fans to his heroic story through the graphic novel trilogy, "MARCH." Lewis' trilogy series tells the story of his childhood and how he became an activist. The graphic novel became the first to win the National Book Award and received four American Library Association awards for youth literature. But Lewis didn't just engage SDCC fans through the pages of each book, but on the convention floor as well. 2087

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's Maritime Museum is giving families the chance to spend the night on the seas — but stay in San Diego. The museum's "Family Overnight" program offers a stay aboard the Star of India, the oldest active sailing ship in the world. Families will embark on imaginary voyage learning about the lives and times of the India's passengers in the 19th century.Instructors will be in character and in costume, as they teach various ship-centric tasks like moving cargo and raising sails. Guests will also be able to see areas of the ship normally closed to the public and sleep on "tween decks" out of the elements.RELATED: Several San Diego museums offering free admission to military families“The Family Overnight program is an immersive unforgettable life-changing experience where together the children and their parents discover and share the same fascination and passion for learning about the history of the sea," Jacob Keeton, Director of Education for the Maritime Museum, said. The overnight experience will be hosted on Saturday, June 22, at 2:30 p.m. until Sunday, June 23 at 9 a.m. Tickets are per person ages 5 and up, and include meals and accommodations. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Some students in the San Diego Unified School District are being allowed to return to campus Tuesday as the district begins the first phase of its reopening plan. The district began the 2020-21 school year on Aug. 31 with a distance learning program for its students. In recent weeks, during the distance learning period, teachers have been working to determine which students they believe would benefit from appointment-based in-person learning sessions.Appointment sessions will be voluntary; the rest of the time, those students will continue with distance learning.SD Unified officials said they’ve also been working with health experts in designing a reopening plan that would ensure all students and staff are safe.Despite the reopening plan, there are some parents who still do not believe it’s enough. On Tuesday afternoon, a group of parents called Reopen SDUSD has scheduled a rally at 4 p.m. in front of the Board of Education building to voice their concerns about the reopening plan. The group, which held a similar rally last month, is calling for a more detailed reopening plan and they want the district to be more transparent.Reopen SDUSD has gathered thousands of signatures for a petition urging the district to allow more students to return to campus.ABC 10News spoke with some parents at the September rally who said they want options because distance learning is not working for them. One mother said her children “dread going on Zoom. They dread being on the computer. They don’t like learning via the screen. They’re just losing a lot of interest, and I end up having to yell at them, ‘Do your work!’ And it’s frustrating because it impacts our relationship in a negative way.” 1725
