For the first time since 2003, the American Heart Association is updating the comprehensive guidelines for blood pressure and hypertension.According to a release from the AHA, patients with a blood pressure reading of 130/80 should now be considered to have hypertension, or abnormally high blood pressure. Previously, a blood pressure level of 140/90 was the baseline for being diagnosed with hypertension.The new guidelines from the AHA mean that nearly half of all American adults — 46 percent — suffer from hypertension. By the AHA’s old standards, 32 percent of American adults suffered from high blood pressure. “We want to be straight with people – if you already have a doubling of risk, you need to know about it,” said Dr. Paul K. Whelton, the lead author of the AHA’s new guidelines. “It doesn’t mean you need medication, but it’s a yellow light that you need to be lowering your blood pressure, mainly with non-drug approaches.”Despite an increase in the amount of Americans with high blood pressure, the AHA hopes their new guidelines mean there will be only a small increase in the amount of patients requiring medication. The Association now generally recommends that patients with Stage 1 hypertension only be prescribed medication in the event of a heart attack or stroke, and they’re also recommending that pharmaceutical companies combine multiple blood pressure drugs. The AHA also hopes the new guidelines encourage patients to monitor their blood pressure at home, away from a stressful setting like a doctor’s office that can skew a single blood pressure test.According to the AHA, the new guidelines were developed by 21 science and health experts who reviewed more than 900 published studies.The new AHA guidelines for diagnosing hypertension are listed below. 1803

Firefighters are battling a massive blaze at a warehouse in Seattle's Queen Anne neighborhood.The fire was reported Saturday night and has impacted multiple structures in the area, said Seattle Fire Public Information Officer Kristin Tinsley.When firefighters arrived, they saw flames as high as 50-75 feet, Tinsley said.One warehouse has collapsed but no injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire was not immediately known, officials said.The building where the fire started is believed to primarily house lumber, Tinsley said.She told CNN affiliate KIRO-TV that crews were fighting the fire defensively, meaning they were not entering any of the structures that were burning. 694

For companies hiring right now, ensuring you're hiring the most qualified candidate can be tricky. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way businesses approach hiring and are forcing them to recruit remotely. "Everything we’ve always done previously has been in person. It’s always been encouraged to do in-person, face-to-face communication. From a job seeker's perspective, obviously, it helps to be in-person and kind of take their facial cues and whatnot, so we really had to change everything we were doing," says Erik Cherkaski with the Fresno Regional Workforce Development Board. Cherkaski says one of his main jobs is to recruit employees for local businesses. Because of the pandemic, their recruiting services are now virtual. Recently, the organization has been holding virtual job fairs for a number of large employers."I think one day we had logistics, so we had some of our local fulfillment centers on. Another day we had the service industry on, so some of the local retailers that were doing mass hiring [participated]. Then, we had a focus on government, as well. So, some of the local and state organizations that were doing some hiring and we had some very good turnout. This was new territory for us," said Cherkaski.Employers held virtual presentations for candidates who tuned in using online meeting platforms like Zoom and Webex. "It was very engaging. We got good feedback from our employers and we are looking to do it again. So that was very positive for us to see that we can do something like this online," said Cherkaski.College students and recent graduates are also finding their first career move by participating in online events. Handshake, which helps connect more than 500,000 employers with college students looking for a job or internship, says it's expanding it's virtual services to accommodate universities who've put their in-person career fairs on hold."There are a lot of opportunities that do still exist even with the change in the economy this particular year. We have so many students across so many different walks of life that are looking in for those opportunities to be able to just jump start their career," said Christine Cruzvergara, with Handshake. To help, Handshake created a new virtual engagement module."That is going to allow employers to be able to actually segment, campaign and reach out to candidates that meet the different criteria and qualifications that they are looking for, across all of our thousands of universities and colleges. They can go beyond the basic qualifications in a virtual fair to be even more tailored around, for example, some of their DEI requirements or their goals," said Cruzvergara.Handshake hopes the new tools not only help employers narrow down the types of students they want to hire, but also helps students. FORTVILLE, Ind. — We continue to learn more about COVID-19 especially the symptoms and researchers are finding survivors are still dealing with the virus months after beating it.“Luckily for me, I did not have a severe case,” Nikki Privett said.She was diagnosed with COVID-19 in April.“I thought everything was fine. I thought, OK, the worst part was my eyes hurt to move,” Privett said.She thought she was in the clear until several months later when she says her hair was coming out in chunks.“At the end of June I noticed, you know girls our hair always falls out in the shower, but I noticed that more and more was coming out in my hands and then eventually in July it became handfuls and I was shocked and I was trying to figure out what was happening,” Privett said.“The long-term symptoms are you know there's a lot more of them than we expected,” said Dr. Natalie Lambert, an associate research professor at Indiana School of Medicine.Lambert said they’ve found COVID survivors are feeling a wide range symptom including hair loss.“We're finding that hair loss is temporary so that when the body starts to recover because it's a huge shock to have COVID-19 the virus impacts many different bodily systems at once so your whole-body needs time to recover,” Lambert said.“I hope that all of this is just temporary and that our bodies will learn to fight this,” Privett said.Lambert said a symptom that is really concerning to her and other researchers is vision changes.
