Four Louisiana correctional officers have been sentenced following an attack of an inmate who was "handcuffed, shackled, and not resisting, and for conspiring to cover up their misconduct by devising a false cover story, submitting false reports documenting that cover story, tampering with witnesses, and lying under oath," the Department to Justice said in a statement.The incident took place at the Penitentiary in Angola, Louisiana.The officers were sentenced last week, and Daniel David was sentenced to 110 months in prison; John Sanders was sentenced to 18 months; James Savoy Jr. was sentenced to 24 months; and Scott Kennedy received a 14-month sentence.The DOJ said that Davis was the ringleader of the incident, and claimed that Davis yanked the inmate’s leg chains, causing the inmate to fall face-first onto the concrete breezeway. The DOJ said that Davis and the other officers then attacked the inmate, who suffered a dislocated shoulder, a hematoma, a collapsed lung, and broken ribs.“Corrections officers are sworn to protect those within our prison systems,” said Brandon J. Fremin U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Louisiana. “Those officers who carry out vicious attacks such as this strip citizens of their basic civil rights and dishonor the work of honest law enforcement officers. Food flew off the shelves in March when the national emergency for COVID-19 was announced. Now, grocers and food manufacturers are working to make sure that doesn’t happen again this winter.“We are a specialty market focusing on the meats and protein,” said Mike Silvestri, general manager at one of three Tony’s Meats & Market locations.Like many grocery stores, both big and small, Tony’s Meats & Market saw the disruption in the supply chain back in March.“What really screwed up a lot of things in this pandemic was people were buying way more than they normally do, not necessarily here, but in the grocery sector in general,” Silvestri said. It's something he is trying to avoid moving forward.“We don’t need to panic buy. I think you buy what you need for the week like you're normally shopping,” he said. “So, just remain calm.”As U.S. coronavirus cases continue to rise--paired with flu season, holidays, and other factors--experts are once again concerned about what the impact on the supply chain might be. So, grocers and food manufacturers are preparing for whatever may come with the winter season, many resorting to stockpiling themselves to avoid running out.“On one side, they're building up inventory to make sure they're ready for it. But on the other side inventory is additional costs,” Jack Buffington, a supply chain expert and professor at the University of Denver, said. “Their concern is the weeks of inventory they had before the pandemic hit was not sufficient for them to run out of supplies. So, particularly for big events like Thanksgiving, to make sure they have ample supply because that's a big moneymaker for them.”For large chain grocery stores, stockpiling in large warehouses is a viable option. For smaller grocers like Tony’s, they only have so much space.“We do have a warehouse. It’s not as monstrous as most people would imagine,” Silvestri said.The company has already prepared by buying pallets of food items to keep at their warehouse to get through the season. “What we would call necessities like pastas, ground beef, pasta sauces, canned items, things like that,” he said.A buyer for Tony’s told us even with the gap of up to three months in June to start getting stuff back in stock, they’ve been stockpiling staple items since March for this winter.“Christmas has begun October 1,” Buffington said. “The entire supply chain is moving things forward. For one reason due to the risk of supply and demand.”“We all had to be on the ball a little bit early this year. Obviously, we start pretty early as it is but because of all the COVID-19 stuff we’ve had to really be mindful of how much we’re looking to shoot over,” Silvestri said. Silvestri said he sees everyone getting concerned about not having enough supply or demand, due to uncertainty.“COVID-19 was a complete catalyst of what you're seeing as a redefinition of the supply chain and the economy,” Buffington said. “I think everybody’s getting scared of not having enough supply and not having enough demand.”As Silvestri and the rest of the crew at Tony's prepare for an uncertain Thanksgiving and Christmas, he says they feel ready.“The pace since COVID-19 started has really been a holiday pace anyway,” he said. 3240

For frontline healthcare workers battling COVID-19, the hospital can feel like a war room. Patients are in need of quick help. Some face life-threatening symptoms that need immediate care. Some cannot be saved.They are split-second decisions that have to be made as more patients funnel into hospital beds, and the effects can weight heavily on those tasking with making them.“The mental health symptoms tend to peak about 12 months after the actual event,” said Dr. Chris Thurstone, director of behavioral health at Denver’s largest hospital, Denver Health.In January, a few months before the pandemic hit, Denver Health implemented a program developed at Johns Hopkins called Resilience in Stressful Events (RISE) to help its employees deal with burnout symptoms, unknown to the influx that was to come.In the first few weeks of the program, the hospital’s drop-in center saw around 30 hospital employees a day. Now, months into the pandemic the same drop-in center is seeing more than 300 hospital employees a day.“[Frontline healthcare workers] describe it as this different of burnout than they’ve felt before,” said Dr. Thurstone.“We’re certainly seeing increased rates of people who are struggling and having a difficult time,” added clinical psychologist Dr. Thom Dunn.It is an unprecedented challenge among doctors, nurses, and other hospital staff that is not only being felt in the United States but globally.Researches in Wuhan found 30 to 50 percent of healthcare providers were in a burnout stage before COVID-19. Now, that number is up to 75 percent of healthcare providers.“Depression, anxiety, insomnia, substance use: those are the four things we watch out for,” said Dr. Thurstone. “As things start to settle down and people actually get a chance to breathe and think and be themselves again, they might notice that they’re not completely themselves.”The RISE program offers counseling and an area for frontline workers to take a load off, through board games and other activities that could help ameliorate the stressors they are experiencing elsewhere in the hospital.At Denver Health, calls into RISE have increased tenfold as well, proving that once COVID-19 becomes manageable, another epidemic may soon start to emerge.“We can’t just get through COVID and then pretend nothing happened,” said Dr. Thurstone. “This is placing a stress and strain on every human being, and healthcare workers are human beings and no exception.” 2458
