Good news and bad news from the IRS this July.The good: the agency reopened for business as of July 13th, which means it is now taking phone calls and processing tax filings as quickly as possible.The bad: during a year when every dime counts, the agency says as many as 4.7 million tax refunds will be delayed another few months.Cristy Mack is one of them. She and her husband never wait to file their taxes because she depends on her refund.But like almost five million other people, they still file paper returns because they are most comfortable doing that."We mailed our paper forms at the end of February," she said.But five months later, Mack still doesn't have her refund."A total of 18 weeks have gone by since we mailed in our return," Mack said.She tried calling the IRS, she says, but like countless other taxpayers, ran into a brick wall."They say they aren't taking calls at the moment," she said.Why refunds are taking so long this yearThe IRS's national taxpayer advocate now says as 4.7 million people who filed paper returns will have very late refunds.That's because the agency furloughed thousands of workers this spring and stopped processing paper returns for two months, creating a huge backlog.Paper processing has restarted, but workers are far behind.Mack needs her tax refund badly."It means a lot to us," she said. Hospital nurses in Philadelphia are ready to go on strike amid a surge of coronavirus cases across the country, according to the union. The union said in a statement that 800 members of the union at St. Mary Medical Center are planning to picket on Tuesday and Wednesday. One of the main sticking points is minimum staffing levels, which is the proportion of patients to nurses in a hospital.“Safe staffing is the main issue in our negotiation--it's why we organized last year in the first place,” says Kathy McKamey R.N., who works on St Mary's MG2 unit and has been at the hospital for 10 years, said in a statement provided by the union. “Trinity has refused to commit to the minimal safe staffing guidelines every study out there has said improve patient outcomes. But the truth is, even if they had, we don't have the staff to fill them because our wage scale is so far below that of area hospitals. Hillsborough County, Florida deputies arrested a Chase Bank call center employee for stealing account information, adding her boyfriend to the accounts and making withdrawals.31-year-old Dakima Williams and her boyfriend, 22-year-old Darius Lopez, are being charged with the crimes.“I went to pick up a prescription and when I went to pay for it with my HSA card it said I had a balance of like ,” Kari Krause, whose joint HSA account with her husband was compromised, said.Krause, who lives in Texas, says investigators told her the suspect had a duplicate debit card created to make the transactions. In total, deputies say nine accounts were compromised.“As soon as we discovered this, we notified authorities and worked with them on the investigation.
