The blast occurred around 6:15 p.m. local time, police said.It was likely caused by a suicide attack, according to Najib Danish, spokesman for the Afghan Ministry of the Interior. The gathering was being held to mark the birthday of the Prophet Mohammed, he said.At least 60 people were injured, the health ministry reported. The security situation in Kabul has deteriorated sharply in the past year.In August, at least 34 people were killed in an attack which targeted an education center. Among the victims were thought to be dozens of teenagers studying English. Then in September, 20 people, including two journalists, were killed in twin bomb attacks on a wrestling club for which ISIS claimed responsibility. The second blast was detonated after emergency services, journalists and police arrived at the scene. In July, the UN released a report stating the number of Afghan civilians killed in the first six months of 2018 had reached a record high. Almost 1,700 civilians were killed from January 1 to June 30, a total higher than at any comparable time over the last 10 years, according to the UN. 1411

A strong winter storm moving over the eastern half of the country has claimed at least eight lives and knocked out power for tens of thousands of people.A turbulent mix of rain, snow and ice that initially hit the Midwest caused havoc from the south to the northeast Thursday. Heavy snowfall is expected Friday in the northern Mid-Atlantic and Northeast states. In portions of Pennsylvania and New England, residents could see snowfall totals of 6 to 12 inches, the National Weather Service said.More than 292,000 customers were without power early Friday morning in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania, according to Poweroutage.us. 906

A preliminary report from the autopsy on Mollie Tibbetts' body determined that her death was a homicide resulting from multiple sharp force injuries, the Iowa State Medical Examiner said.Tibbetts, a 20-year-old student at the University of Iowa, went missing after an evening jog on July 18, sparking a major search in the region. A body that officials believed to be hers was found on Tuesday in a rural area, hidden under corn stalks, and the autopsy confirmed her identity.Cristhian Bahena Rivera, a 24-year-old Mexican man who illegally came to the United States, was charged with her murder on Wednesday after he confessed to following her on her run. In an arrest affidavit, Rivera said he remembered getting mad at her; what happened afterward was "blocked" from his memory. 789

A new poll found many parents have no plans to get their children the flu shot this year.According to a new report published by C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, 34 percent of U.S. parents say their children are unlikely getting the vaccine this flu season.Dr. Judith Shlay with Denver Public Health says it can be extremely dangerous to opt out of getting the shot. "They can be hospitalized and die from it as we saw last year, and we assume this year will be just as bad as last year," Dr. Shlay says.Of the 1,977 parents polled, the report found 48 percent of the participants said they usually follow the recommendations of their child’s healthcare provider when making decisions about the flu shot. But 21 percent say they don’t remember if their doctor recommended the vaccine. Many adults The NOW spoke with say they don’t remember flu shots being recommended by doctors when they were younger. Dr. Shlay says before the year 2000, they weren't."Before that time period, we were only asking high-risk adults, elderly and at-risk children to get vaccinated," Dr. Shlay explains.Parents says they have their own reasons as to why they don't get their kids flu shots. Some of those reasons include potential side effects, the belief the shot doesn’t work and that their child is healthy and doesn’t need to be vaccinated."You might still get the flu, but by taking the vaccine, you will reduce the disease burden from taking it. It will be a milder infection," Dr. Shlay says.Doctors also recommend not waiting to get the shot.  "Flu activity is high December and January, so the best time to get it is now," Dr. Shlay says. 1648
