Tattoos have been around for thousands of years, primarily as an artform. But what if they had a purpose, beyond just aesthetics? “I think that we can upgrade tattoo inks to give people new abilities,” says Carson Bruns, a mechanical engineer professor at the University of Colorado. Bruns is also a tattoo aficionado. "I got my first tattoo when I was 19 years old, and I’ve been addicted to tattoos ever since," Bruns says.He spends his days in a lab, working to bring an ancient artform into the 21st Century. "My idea is that, by adding new function, new properties to the tattoo inks, that tattoos could potentially be used for more than just art," he says. Bruns is focused on a specific type of tattoo ink, one that would embed tiny microcapsules filled with certain material underneath the skin. One of his most promising developments would fill those capsules with UV dye. It’d essentially be a tattoo that tells you when you need to apply sunscreen. "So our tattoo, anytime you can see it, anytime it's visible to you, that's a sign your skin is dangerously exposed to UV light and its increasing your risk to skin cancer,” Bruns explains. Other types of inks would be heat-sensitive, like the squares he's tested on his own skin. Those would only appear when your body reached a certain temperature. "A tattooable thermometer, made of these heat sensitive tattoo inks could be a way to make it more accessible for people to read their body temp and check up on their own health," he says. Bruns says the possibilities are endless. "I like to joke tattoos can give you superpowers,” he says. “They can give our skin new properties we don't currently have."Bruns hopes that one day, we might even be able to come up with tattoo inks that could conduct electricity or even tell us our blood sugar or blood alcohol levels. 1843

The opioid crisis has had a devastating impact across the country. Now, doctors in one state are tackling the problem head on, and it starts with how they treat pain in the emergency room. When Dr. Donald Stader walks through his emergency room these days, it's almost like he's a different doctor. “I used to over prescribe opioids for the first several years of my career and residency,” he says. “I was giving them out like Tic Tacs, if you will.” All that changed a few years ago, when he met a woman overdosing on heroin. “She told me that she actually got hooked after being prescribed Percocet for an ankle sprain,” Dr. Stader says. “And one thing that struck me, earlier that day I had prescribed Percocet for an ankle sprain and thought that I was practicing really good medicine.” Now, he and his hospital, Swedish Medical Center, are a part of the Colorado Hospital Association’s ALTO Project, a program aiming to reduce the use of opioids in emergency rooms in the state, using alternative pain treatment. The program is paying off. However, experts say it's too late. The crisis is so bad, so simply improving prescription practices is not enough to combat opioid abuse. In an article published in JAMA Psychiatry, doctors say in addition to tighter drug restrictions, psychiatrists specializing in depression and suicide, along with new research and treatments, are needed. Now, they treat patients with medications like Tylenol and ibuprofen. For stronger pain, they use ketamine, bentyl and lidocaine, which is often used in the dentist’s office. Two million Americans struggle with opioid addiction and 42,000 people died of overdoses in 2016 alone. 1678

Amtrak says a train with almost 200 people on board is finally moving again after 36 hours stuck in a snowy spot south of Eugene, Oregon. No one was hurt when the train hit a tree that had fallen onto the tracks Sunday about 6:18 p.m., Amtrak said. And passengers reported a "kumbaya" atmosphere during the ordeal. The train is being pulled by a Union Pacific locomotive back toward Eugene, said Tim McMahan, spokesman for Union Pacific, which owns the Oregon rail line where the train had been stranded. 526

A federal official says the White House overruled health officials who wanted to recommend that elderly and physically fragile Americans be advised not to fly on commercial airlines because of the new coronavirus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention submitted the plan this week as a way of trying to control the virus, but White House officials ordered the air travel recommendation be removed. That’s according to a federal official with direct knowledge of the plan who did not have authorization to talk about the matter and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.Meanwhile, Officials in Washington, D.C., say a man in his 50s has tested positive for coronavirus, marking the first presumptively confirmed case in the nation’s capital. District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser said Saturday that the man started exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 in late February and was hospitalized Thursday. She said another man, from Nigeria, who had passed through Washington has also tested positive for the virus in Maryland. Trump says he isn't concerned “at all” about the coronavirus getting closer to the White House after the first Washington case and an attendee of a recent political conference where Trump himself had spoken also tested positive for the virus.Missouri and Kansas also reported their first case as the virus spreads into the nation's heartland. A St. Louis-area woman who recently traveled to Italy is the U.S. state of Missouri's first confirmed coronavirus case.St. Louis County Executive Sam Page said Saturday that the woman is in her 20s and is at home with her parents. She was returning home from Italy when she showed symptoms.Page said the parents are not showing symptoms. The Missouri announcement came the same day that neighboring Kansas also announced its first case of the virus. The number of U.S. coronavirus cases swelled to 400, with cases in about half of the states. Indiana, Minnesota, Nebraska and Pennsylvania also recently reported their first cases. The total U.S. death toll has reached 19. 2071
