SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A spokesperson for the County of San Diego said over two days, they have received approximately 580 complaints of businesses and entities not following the proper restrictions under the purple tier.The county has already sent out dozens of cease and desists orders since Monday. That includes at least two churches, Foothills Christian Church and Awaken Church, but the warnings are not stopping some churches from shutting down indoor operations.Since the pandemic began, Awaken Church has received two cease and desist letters. Once in July for its Balboa Campus, and the latest on Monday for the Carlsbad location, but it appears the church has no intentions of shutting down indoor services.A statement posted on the church’s website said in part, “In keeping our First Amendment right, we will continue to minister to those who are the most affected by all the COVID-19 lockdowns. Specifically tending to those who are struggling with depression, anxiety, hopelessness, suicidal thoughts, and addiction.”Bishop Arthur Hodges is a Senior Pastor at South Bay Pentecostal Church. As bishop, he oversees more than 100 churches in Southern California, including 25 in San Diego County.“About 50 percent are electing to remain indoors for worship,” he said. “About 30 percent are outdoors, and 20 percent are online only.”Hodges has taken the fight to stay open to the U.S. Supreme Court once, and it about to again, hoping a ruling could benefit all houses of worship nationwide.“We are filing either today or tomorrow back in the Supreme Court to reopen churches and for our constitutional guarantees to be recognized,” he said. “We are hopeful for an expeditious ruling, and we think it’ll be favorable to churches, and that’ll affect churches not only in California but across the nation.”A county spokesperson said if a cease and desist order is ignored, the next step would be a closure order. After that, law enforcement is asked to get involved by giving citations with a thousand dollar fine for each violation; then the case goes to either the San Diego District Attorney or City Attorney.In a video posted to the Awaken Church website in August, two church pastors explained why they believe religious services are essential, explaining the risks to their congregants’ mental health.It’s something we’ve heard from other religious leaders, like the lead pastor of Skyline Church, Dr. Jeremy McGarity.“We can’t stand by and not help people,” said McGarity. “We realized we can protect the most vulnerable and have services at the same time. It will be an off year… which is what we did after Avengers 1 and what we’ve done every few years," Feige said. "There will be a tenth-anniversary presence at Comic-Con but [no Hall H panel.]"Marvel has traditionally booked a Hall H slot on Saturday night of Comic-Con to make major announcements, tease upcoming movies, and deliver special experiences to fans. SAN DIEGO — An aging shopping center right across from one of San Diego's most luxurious could be in for a major revitalization project.The 31-year-old Costa Verde shopping center is right across from the modern Westfield UTC. The center, at the corner of Genesee and Nobel, serves the community with grocery stores, places to eat, exercise, and get gas and dry cleaning. However, it has several vacancies and there are always empty parking spaces. Now, it appears to be in for a major overhaul that would help it fit right in with Westfield UTC. Owner Regency Centers is moving toward tearing down the entire mall, except for the McDonalds and gas station/car wash on the southwest end. It would then rebuild the retail portion, with the same community serving stores. But, this time, it would add a 200-room business hotel, and 400,000 square-feet of biotech office space, partnering with Alexandria Real Estate."The neighborhood is the most dynamic neighborhood, not only in San Diego County, not only in Southern California, not even on the west coast," said John Murphy, who is leading the project for Regency Centers. "It is one of the most dynamic pieces of property in the country."The San Diego Planning Commission unanimously recommended the project for approval Thursday. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former San Diego High School teacher who sexually and physically assaulted an underage female student pleaded guilty to 11 felonies Tuesday, including lewd acts on a child and assault.Juan Carlos Herrera, 49, formerly a special needs curriculum instructor, is slated to be sentenced to 10 years in state prison next month for assaulting the unidentified victim "on almost a daily basis" between February 2018 and March of this year, when the girl was 15 and 16 years old, according to Deputy District Attorney Jessica Coto.His plea agreement includes lifetime registration as a sex offender and a strike offense for his plea to a dissuading a witness count for threatening the girl if she told anyone about what happened.RELATED: SDHS teacher accused of having sex with student represents himself in courtIn addition to the sexual assaults, Herrera threatened to cut the girl's arms and legs off if she told anyone what was going on, choked her and threw her on the ground, according to the prosecutor.The crimes occurred in his classroom, his car and at a hotel, prosecutors said.The prosecutor said the girl was a San Diego High School student, but is not a special needs student and was not one of Herrera's students."This case involves emotional manipulation by the defendant, who was verbally abusive and coercive towards the victim in this case, who was particularly vulnerable, as (Herrera) took advantage of information he knew about her background and used it to manipulate her," Coto said following his May arraignment.The investigation into Herrera began earlier this year, when the victim's mother reported finding suspicious and concerning text messages from Herrera on the girl's cellphone, SDPD Lt. SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — Searchers are combing a section of the San Bernardino Mountains for signs of a missing off-duty firefighter. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department says the search Saturday is focusing on an area of Highway 18 where Carlos Baltazar’s car was located by the California Highway Patrol on Sept. 20. Baltazar is a member of a U.S. Forest Service Interagency Hotshot Crew. He was reported missing by family members on Sept. 24. At the time, he was off duty and not in the area of the El Dorado Fire in the San Bernardino National Forest. Another hotshot, Charles Morton, died while fighting that fire on Sept. 17. 654
