A shopping trip for school supplies at a Texas Walmart ended in tragedy for a mother who was fatally shot while shielding her infant son from gunfire, her aunt told CNN.Jordan Anchondo and her husband were shopping for school supplies after dropping off their daughter at cheer practice when a gunman opened fire in an El Paso shopping center, Elizabeth Terry told CNN on Sunday.The mother of three later died at a hospital after using her body to protect her 2-month-old son, Terry said.Her husband, Andre, is still missing, the aunt said."How do parents go school shopping and then die shielding their baby from bullets?" Terry said."The baby still had her blood on him. You watch these things and see these things and you never think this is going to happen to your family."Anchondo was one of at least 20 people killed after the gunman opened fire Saturday in what authorities are calling an act of domestic terrorism. It was the third mass shooting in the United States in a week -- and less than 24 hours later another deadly shooting spree in Dayton, Ohio, left nine dead.Families are still trying to identify loved ones.The baby was "pulled from under her body," said Terry, the sister of Anchondo's father, Paul, for whom the injured infant is named.The infant suffered broken fingers and is due to undergo an MRI, said Terry, who traveled from Sacramento after the shooting to be with her family in El Paso."My brother is devastated. We are just hoping and praying we find Andre alive. Any little hope that we can hold on to, that's what we are doing," Terry said.The first call of an active shooter went out at 10:39 a.m. local time, El Paso Police Chief Greg Allen said. Around 2 p.m., Anchondo's relatives started calling each other, saying the couple was not answering their phones, Terry said.She died alone at the hospital because no one was able to immediately find her, her aunt said."It took us a while to confirm and identify her throughout all the chaos."Anchondo's father confirmed her identity. Across the country, 86 percent of police departments are dealing with an officer shortage. Half of those departments report the shortage has gotten worse in the last five years.“I grew up in a police family,” said Captain Nick Augustine with the Montgomery County Police Department. “I always saw the police car in the drive way, and it was always a career I wanted to go towards.”Augustine followed his father’s footsteps, put on a badge, and joined the force in 2001. He joined at a time when it was common to have legacy officers, meaning officers who were second or third generation police. However, with the declining number of people joining police departments, that has changed. “We may have one or two applicants who come from the law enforcement family that are actually applying to be a police officer,” said Augustine. As a captain in the Montgomery County Police Department, heading up the personnel division,Augustine has seen the shortage firsthand. The shortage in both legacy officers and the shortage in the number of people join the force altogether.The shortage at MCPD began in 2014. In August of that year, MCPD had 1,400 applicants for that academy class. The next class had only 600 applicants, which was a 58 percent reduction.“That was alarming,” said Augustine. “We were still able to fill our class at that point, but over the last couple of session, that has dropped where we haven’t been able to fill classes.”Any of the departments around the country, like Seattle and Miami, are dealing with shortages at a similar rate as MCPD. Adding to that, many departments are also seeing a rise in the number of officers resigning within the first five years on the job.“Looking at reasons why our numbers are dropping, the economy right now is very strong with low unemployment numbers,” explained Augustine. “Veterans--which we tend to have apply to be law enforcement officers--are now being offered private contracting jobs, which is paying higher than a government job.”Surveys from multiple police research organizations show recent controversial events and public perception of police officers have also played a role in the shortage.To combat this, departments have increased recruitment efforts. MCPD has place billboards outside their county and streamlined the police officer application process.“This is a rewarding career,” Augustine said. “You never know how many people you affect in the community by your actions.” 2463

American Airlines plans to cancel flights well into April because of the Boeing 737 Max grounding.American, the world's largest airline, said Sunday it is canceling about 90 flights a day out through April 24. Before Sunday's announcement, American had only canceled flights through March 28.The airline is hopeful that that the 737 Max planes will be flying again soon, but said it is canceling flights about a month out as it waits for word from the Federal Aviation Administration."Canceling in advance provides additional availability and rebooking options for our customers," said the statement from American.The global fleet of 371 of the 737 Max jets was grounded indefinitely on March 13 after two of the planes had fatal crashes. A Lion Air flight crashed in October and an Ethiopian Airlines flight crashed on March 10.The causes of the crashes have yet to be determined but the focus has been on an automatic safety feature which may have forced the nose of each plane lower when it incorrectly believed the plane was in danger of going into a stall.Boeing and the FAA said they are working on an upgrade of its software to deal with that safety feature. Boeing said at the time of the grounding that it expected that update to be available "within weeks."American has 24 of the 737 Max 8 jets. But not every flight which had been scheduled to have a 737 Max has been canceled. American said it has rearranged its schedule to use other aircraft to complete some of those flights."We have balanced [cancellations] across our system," said the airline. It said both international and domestic flights are affected. "We will vary by day as we look to impact the fewest number of customers."American operates 3,300 flights its mainline system daily on average, and another 3,400 through regional carriers and partner airlines.Other carriers are not canceling nearly that far out.Southwest Airlines, which has 34 737 Max jets, said it is only canceling five days out at this point.
