SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Kids and teens struggling with their mental health during the Coronavirus Pandemic and weeks of protests over racial injustice have a new way to cope.BlueShield CA has expanded its Blue Sky program, increasing funding to local mental health organizations and giving kids a platform to share tips on dealing with anxiety and depression."There's a greater need now than ever," says Blue Sky Program Manager Amanda Lasik. "There's a greater need to speak to youth voices and listen and learn from what's going on."According to the CDC, 7.1% of kids age 3-17 have been diagnosed with anxiety, and 3.2% of kids in the same age group have been diagnosed with depression. Experts believe those numbers will rise because of the pandemic and protests.As part of the expansion, Blue Sky partnered with DoSomething.org to launch the "New State of Mind" campaign. Kids send tips for coping to the website, which get published through emails, texts, and social media."The response has been overwhelming," says Lasik. "When we were originally planning this campaign, we thought it'd be great if we got about 17,000 tips. We've already received over 60,000."In addition to the "New State of Mind" effort, Blue Sky has provided 0,000 to 18 youth organizations in San Diego and Alameda county. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It's not often you hear about a bird being rescued from a tree. That's a task San Diego Fire-Rescue was up to in Mission Bay Thursday. Around 12:30 p.m. County Animal Services called for special service when they found an owl entangled in a tree. In a Facebook post SDFR wrote that the owl was caught in fishing line, leaving it suspended from the branches of the tree near 1775 E. Mission Bay Drive. The Engine 20 crew used a ladder to get to the bird and help set it free.  533

But few have had to endure the hurdles of Bryce Olson."I started to come to terms with my own mortality," said Olson in November of 2018. "I didn't even think I would see my kid get out of elementary school, and I started losing hope."We have been following Bryce Olson's story for over two years. We profiled the Oregon man because he had been traveling to San Diego for research and precision therapies for his Stage 4 Metastatic Prostate Cancer. And then the pandemic hit."It makes me feel that I'm a sitting duck," added Olson back in March.Our Michael Chen revisited Olson nine months ago at the beginning of the pandemic. COVID-19 cases were on the rise, and Olson had to weigh the risk of traveling with a weak immune system or slowly dying without his treatment."It was kind of this Sophie's Choice issue of, you know I might die of cancer in the long term, but gosh COVID could kill me in the short term," said Olson just last week.But instead, something remarkable happened when Olson's story started spreading."And then your piece aired, and an amazing individual, super generous, kind individual saw that, and he had access to private transportation," said Olson with a smile.That good Samaritan was co-founder and former CEO of Sprouts, Shon Boney. He provided a private plane so Bryce could fly into San Diego for his treatments until he was healthy enough to fly commercially."He got me out of my shell," added Olson. "He got me back into San Diego, comfortable going into the hospital with my N95 mask and he increased my confidence in being able to do this."The timing was perfect. Olson couldn't spare another missed treatment. The cancer had spread to his spine, and within weeks he would have been unable to walk. But that was just the beginning of his renewed hope. WIRED then picked up Olson's story, which has led to even more attention, a consortium of his case study and the potential for revolutionary experimental therapies through Research to the People benefiting not just Olson but millions of other cancer patients."What's happened post WIRED is I've got all these researchers, scientists, and medical professionals that want to help me take this amazing set of data," added Olson. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Leonardo Hurtado Ibarra is being remembered as a family man with a complex and troubled life.“He’d always keep a smile on his face regardless of whatever he was going through," Abril Huerta told ABC 10News.Ibarra, 25, was shot and killed after allegedly pointing a revolver at a San Diego Police Department officer in Downtown San Diego on Saturday night.According to police, officers recognized Ibarra from a wanted poster in connection with a robbery that happened last week. Police said officers tried to talk with Ibarra but he walked away.Ibarra then dropped some items from his arms and "reached into his waistband," according to police. That's when officers, fearing for their lives, opened fire, police said.RELATED: SDPD release surveillance video, body cam footage from officer-involved shooting in Downtown San DiegoABC 10News asked Huerta if Ibarra was known to carry a weapon. She said Ibarra "wasn’t a saint" and that he had a "complicated background."Ibarra was sentenced to three years in prison stemming from a domestic abuse case in 2013, according to court records obtained by ABC 10News.Huerta, who said she was the love of Ibarra’s life, told ABC 10News that he leaves behind three children.“He loved his family," Huerta told 10News in a statement. "He was the most loyal individual you could ever meet and he’d give you the shirt off his back if you were in need."“He only wanted to defend himself from any harm that were to come his way,” she said. The police department has not released the names of the officers involved in the shooting. The case will be reviewed by the county District Attorney's Office to determine if the officers are subject to any criminal liability, according to police.San Diego Police could not comment further while the investigation is ongoing. 1824
