WASHINGTON (AP) — An arcane battle over emergency Federal Reserve powers is frustrating efforts to lock down an agreement on an almost trillion COVID-19 economic relief package. The impasse is just the latest stumble in a partisan, monthslong battle over COVID-19 relief, and feelings hardened as the Senate congregated for a weekend session. Lawmakers on both sides said the sticking point was a provision by Republican Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania that would curb emergency Federal Reserve powers. Republicans are insisting on the Toomey plan, while Democrats are adamantly against it. A compromise was proving elusive. 635

WASHINGTON — Joe Biden has said during a virtual town hall that President Donald Trump was the country's “first” racist president. The presumptive Democratic presidential nominee’s comment came Wednesday in response to a questioner mentioning the president referring to the coronavirus as the “China virus." "We’ve had racists, and they’ve existed. They’ve tried to get elected president. He’s the first one that has,” Biden said. However, many presidents — including the nation’s first, George Washington — owned slaves. Trump responded by saying that he'd done more for Black Americans than any other president, with the possible exception of Abraham Lincoln. 669

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge on Thursday halted a deportation in progress and threatened to hold Attorney General Jeff Sessions in contempt if the mother and daughter weren't returned to the U.S.U.S. District Judge Emmet G. Sullivan of Washington learned in court that the two plaintiffs in a lawsuit before him were being removed from the United States and confirmed later that they were on a plane headed to Central America. He said any delay in bringing them back would be intolerable. If they fail to comply, the judge said, Sessions, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and other senior Homeland Security officials would have to convince him not to hold them in contempt of court. The Department of Homeland Security was bringing the pair back to the United States on Thursday after the plane landed in El Salvador. The mother and daughter did not disembark in the Central American country."This is pretty outrageous," Sullivan said in court, according to The Washington Post. "That someone seeking justice in U.S. court is spirited away while her attorneys are arguing for justice for her?""I'm not happy about this at all," the judge said, according to the Post. "This is not acceptable."The woman — identified in court as Carmen — is a plaintiff in a lawsuit filed this week against the administration by the American Civil Liberties Union over efforts to prevent immigrants from seeking asylum because of domestic and gang violence in their home countries. The lawsuit asks the judge to invalidate Sessions' June 11 decision to restrict the kinds of cases that qualify for asylum. The judge imposed a halt Thursday on deporting Carmen, her daughter and six other plaintiffs. The Justice Department declined to comment on the judge's threat of contempt. 1780

WASHINGTON (AP) — FBI Director Chris Wray says he regards antifa as more of an ideology than an organization. That differs from President Donald Trump, who has suggested that antifa be formally designated as a terror group.Wray did not dispute in testimony Thursday to the House Homeland Security Committee that antifa activists were a serious concern. But he said it’s not a group or an organization.Hours after the hearing, Trump took to Twitter to chastise his FBI director for his statements on antifa and on Russian election interference....And I look at them as a bunch of well funded ANARCHISTS & THUGS who are protected because the Comey/Mueller inspired FBI is simply unable, or unwilling, to find their funding source, and allows them to get away with “murder”. LAW & ORDER! https://t.co/yHLzB0RQ8e— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 18, 2020 But Chris, you don’t see any activity from China, even though it is a FAR greater threat than Russia, Russia, Russia. They will both, plus others, be able to interfere in our 2020 Election with our totally vulnerable Unsolicited (Counterfeit?) Ballot Scam. Check it out! https://t.co/mH3vrHWvS8— Donald J.
