SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Authorities are investigating a shooting involving U.S. Customs and Border Protection near the San Ysidro Port of Entry Monday night. The San Diego Police Department told 10News the suspect is a 23-year-old man in a white pickup truck who was trying to drive into the United States from Mexico.Police say he had been directed to a secondary screening area but failed to stop for an inspection and began firing at border agents. The man attempted to drive away, but authorities shot back. SDPD said at least seven CBP officers fired their weapons, killing the driver.According to a witness who was driving to the border from National City, police could be heard telling someone to pull over. The witness added that a police helicopter could also be seen in the area. San Diego Police say they're helping with the shooting investigation, which originally involved Border Patrol and CBP. Marco Sotomayor, Secretary of Public Security in Tijuana, tweeted that CBP closed all lanes of the port during the incident, but quickly reopened them. 1075

SEATTLE (KGTV) -- Newly released body camera footage shows the moment police officers nabbed a pair of thieves trying to walk out of a Seattle-area Costco carrying ,200 worth of laptops and vacuums. On March 14, South Precinct officers responded to a call at about 5:30 p.m. of a shoplift in progress at the Costco, police said. Loss Prevention officers inside the store recognized one of the suspects inside and said he had previously stolen items in the past and run out the fire exit. Responding Seattle Police Department officers spotted a female driver inside a black Toyota that was backed up to the store's emergency exit doors.  The officers pulled their patrol vehicle in front of the Toyota to prevent it from leaving and contacted the 18-year-old woman, police said.As police were talking with the woman, they could hear someone attempting to open the doors."Moments later, two suspects, a 30-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman opened the emergency doors and attempted to walk out of the store carrying stolen computers and vacuum cleaners," police said.Officers located a 7″ fixed blade from the male suspect. According to the security personnel, the suspect had carried a large knife in past incidents. The male suspect was later booked into the King County Jail for investigation of robbery, while the two women were booked for investigation of theft, police said. 1428

SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) - New restrictions in place at the border designed to slow the spread of COVID-19 are also drastically slowing traffic. Some commuters reported waiting seven, eight, nine hours trying to cross into San Ysidro from Mexico over the weekend.A woman in her late 80's died Sunday while waiting in a car with family to cross into San Ysidro, according to reporting partner Televisa.Emilio Tamez owns three restaurants in the South Bay, including one in San Ysidro. Many of his employees live in Tijuana."They're just hurting more businesses, and they're hurting the people who are holding the economy right now," said Tamez. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency started implementing the new measures Friday. They're designed to discourage people from traveling to Mexico for non-essential travel."You've got this, history of many decades of people going across for work purposes or for business purposes things that have nothing to do with leisure or tourism, these are people whose livelihood depends on the border, so you're affecting that large group of people," said Gustavo De La Fuente, executive director of the Smart Border Coalition.De La Fuente said he understands the move to an extent."In some cases, people should stay home, if you want to go into Ensenada or Rosarito for tourism purposes, right now is not the best time to do it," said De La Fuente.A spokesman with CBP sent 10News a statement, that reads in part:"According to the U.S Customs and Border Protection, a recent survey of more than 100,000 travelers on the southwest border found that the vast majority of cross-border travel by U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents is for purposes that are not deemed essential. To respond to the ongoing public health crisis and protect local southwest border communities, CBP is taking measures to discourage non-essential travel to and from Mexico to limit the spread of COVID-19 in the United States. "Tamez said it's the people working the hardest who will suffer the most."I find it to be very cruel, these people already, before would have to get up 3 hours early just to get to a job here," said Tamez.Similar measures are in place in Tucson, El Paso, and Laredo Texas. The restrictions are expected to last until at least September 21st. 2302

The Honduran Consulate in Los Angeles confirmed he had served 10 years in a Honduras prison for homicide and another 3 years for robbery. He added that he had traveled to the U.S. among the migrant caravan from Honduras, border agents said.RELATED: Mexico's new president could change border policy“It was Border Patrol agents’ effort and valued partnership with the Honduran Consulate in Los Angeles that helped us identify a dangerous convicted felon moving amongst the migrant caravan," San Diego Sector Chief Patrol Agent Rodney Scott said.Ramirez and the two other men, ages 22 and 38, are all Honduran nationals and being held in Department of Homeland Security custody pending deportation proceedings. The arrest was made a day after El Centro border officials say an admitted MS-13 gang member suspected of being in the U.S. illegally was arrested near the Calexico Port of Entry.Border officials said 29-year-old Jose Villalobos-Jobel, of Honduras, told agents he had traveled to the U.S. border within the migrant caravan group as well.
