SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego is celebrating 250 years of history in 2019 with special events planned to commemorate the anniversary. Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced efforts for the San Diego 250 initiative Tuesday at a news conference. The San Diego region has been Kumeyaay territory for thousands of years, but the San Diego we know today began on July 16, 1769, city officials said. “This year we mark a tremendous milestone – 250 years of history, culture and achievement,” Mayor Faulconer said. “San Diego is the place where California began, and we will reflect on our past, commemorate this moment in time and look forward to building a better future for all San Diegans in the next 250 years. I want to thank the many dedicated individuals and organizations that have come together to help celebrate this important anniversary and create opportunities to learn more about our history and heritage as a city and region.” A group of civic leaders, organizations, community volunteers has met biweekly to plan key events. Kumeyaay representatives have also contributed to the group’s discussions about an accurate historical representation of their history. Several departments and organizations gave presentations to a committee, lead by Councilmember Chris Ward.The Select Committee on Homelessness met to discuss how to create new employment opportunities for homeless and how to get them into the existing rapid-rehousing programs. They also discussed a new program that would house all homeless services in one location.The San Diego Police Department provided an overview of their new Neighborhood Policing division. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego Harbor Police are investigating an apparent drug overdose that sent four men to the hospital Thursday.Harbor Police said four men were found unresponsive on a charter boat docked at Fisherman’s Landing, off San Diego Bay, at around 9 a.m.ABC 10News learned investigators are looking into the possibility the men may have overdosed on drugs laced with fentanyl.The men were given Narcan and taken to the hospital. Narcan is typically used to aid someone suspected of overdosing on opioids, including heroin and prescription pain medications.There is no immediate word on their condition. 623

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police arrested a man who tried to rob a downtown bank Saturday.Police said a 34-year-year old white man entered the Chase Bank on West Broadway and handed a note to a teller saying that he was robbing the bank shortly before 3 p.m. The teller was able to keep the suspect inside the bank until San Diego Police arrived on the scene. Police took the empty-handed suspect into custody without incident as he was walking out of the bank. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.  585
