BEIJING, April 7 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government said Wednesday it will continue to develop the country's western regions with a focus on improving people's well-being.The government will resolutely push forward the development of the west strategy, which was initiated ten years ago and has facilitated historic social and economic progress in the region, according to a statement released after a executive meeting of the State Council on Wednesday chaired by Premier Wen Jiabao.More efforts will be made to improve education, health services, job creation, social security, as well as cultural and sports development, to promote equal social services, the statement said.Infrastructure construction will be given priority, with the building of hydro-power stations to relieve water shortages in the region, it said.The government also called for sustainable development through a recycling and energy-saving industries and for all projects to meet ecological protection standards.The government's consistent efforts to develop the western regions have helped bridge the region's gap with the better-off coastal areas in eastern China.Figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics showed the industrial added-value for the central and western provinces grew by 17 percent in 2008, 6 percentage points more than the eastern areas.

KHARTOUM, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Sudanese official said Saturday that the China-Arab Cooperation Forum constitutes an important platform to upgrade the economic, commercial and social ties between China and the Arab world."The China-Arab Cooperation Forum is important as it constitutes one of the major mechanisms to enhance and strengthen the economic and commercial relations between the Arab states and China," Abdul-Baqui Jailani, Sudanese state minister for humanitarian affairs, told Xinhua, one week before a ministerial conference of the China-Arab Cooperation Forum scheduled for May 13, in Tianjin, China.Jailani regarded the Sino-Sudanese cooperation as a model for the Arab countries to follow suit, saying that "Chinese experience in Sudan deserves to be studied thoroughly and it deserves to be repeated elsewhere in any other African or Arab country"."I think if we take for example oil industry, exploration and production services, the Chinese have proved to be at the highest level of development in this industry in particular, and I think we can develop this in other similar countries where there are reserves of petroleum," he added.He went on to say that "China is working with full transparency; they can build confidence with others without any hindrances or obstacles."The Sudanese official further called upon the Arab and African countries as well to give the Chinese a chance to invest and cooperate, adding that "such cooperation will result in mutual benefit for both China and others nations."He affirmed that China's contribution to establishment of development projects in Sudan would help in achieving lasting stability and peace in the country, saying that "for example, if we concentrate on development, on infrastructure, we will come to peace in Darfur. BEIJING, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Two spokespersons have been named for China's Information Office of the State Council, or Cabinet, and the International Communication Office of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.The two spokespersons are Guo Weimin, director of the press bureau under the two offices, and Li Wufeng, director of the offices' Internet affairs bureau, according to a press release on the office's official website.In December last year, Wang Chen, director of the State Council Information Office, said the establishment of a spokesperson system for the CPC committees would be a major task for 2010.The system would be promoted in departments of the CPC Central Committee and provincial-level committees to enable them to release information on Party-related affairs by holding press conferences and providing interview opportunities, he said.

BEIJING, April 3 (Xinhua) -- China's Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) of the non-manufacturing sector rose to 58.4 percent in March, a rebound of12 percentage points from February, when the index fell below the boom-bust line of 50 percent for the first time since a year earlier, an industrial association said Saturday.The PMI, designed to provide a real-time snapshot of business conditions, includes a package of indices including new orders, inventory levels, production and others that measure economic performance. A reading of above 50 percent suggests expansion, while one below 50 percent indicates contraction.The rise of the index indicated robust market activities in service sectors, which combined with an optimistic outlook that would encourage private investment and promote healthy and coordinated development of national economy, said the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing (CFLP) vice president Cai Jin.According to the CFLP survey, the new order sub-index for China's non-manufacturing sector climbed to 54.6 percent last month, up 8.4 percentage points than February. The outlook sub-index was 70.4 percent, up 2.4 percentage points.The CFLP survey covers 20 non-manufacturing industries, including logistics, wholesale, hospitality, supermarkets and construction.The PMI for manufacturing sectors rose to 55.1 percent in March, the 13th straight month that the index was above 50 percent.
