BEIJING, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- China said it will make greater efforts to start six-party emergency consultations because tensions on the Korean Peninsula have not eased."The six-party talks are a very important way to advance the denuclearization process on the Korean Peninsula and maintain peace and stability in northeast Asia. We, the concerned parties, should make full use of the talks," Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said in an interview in Beijing Friday.Launched in 2003 and stalled since the end of 2008, the six-party talks involve China, Russia, the United States, Japan, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the Republic of Korea (ROK)."While the talks have yet to be resumed, we think it is the proper time for emergency consultations between the heads of the delegations of the six parties," said the foreign minister.Tensions remain high on the Korean Peninsula after the DPRK and the ROK exchanged artillery fire on Nov. 23. China proposed emergency consultations among the chief negotiators in December.Amid the international community's repeated calls for restraint and calm, the United States held separate large-scale naval drills with the ROK and Japan in waters near the peninsula."We will continue to make patient efforts to persuade the parties to engage in consultations," Yang said.He said the tensions on the peninsular will ease "only if all the parties show their sincerity and make joint efforts.""Stability on the Korean Peninsula is good for all. BEIJING, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator, Wu Bangguo, met with his Maldivian counterpart Abdulla Shahid in Beijing Monday and called for closer relations between the two nations and the two parliaments.Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, said the growth of bilateral relations in recent years had yielded substantial benefits for the two peoples.Wu said China valued ties with the Maldives and was willing to maintain friendly exchanges and cooperation at all levels in an effort to expand political mutual trust and economic and trade cooperation in fields such as fisheries, tourism, and infrastructure construction.China would encourage Chinese companies to further participate in the Maldives' national construction and more Chinese tourists to visit the country, Wu said.Wu voiced his hope for stronger coordination between the two nations on international issues in order to build a relationship that would be a model for relations between big and small nations.Wu suggested the two legislatures promote dialogue and exchanges of views among members on successful experiences of national construction so as to inject new vitality to the development of bilateral relations.Shahid, speaker of the Maldivian People's Majlis, said the Maldivian people treasured the friendship of the Chinese people, and the rapid growth of the Chinese economy offered inspiration to developing countries, including the Maldives.Shahid pledged the Maldivian parliament would continue to play a constructive role in promoting bilateral relations.Shahid is leading a Maldivian parliamentary delegation to China at the invitation of Wu. BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Public Security (MPS) has ordered a fresh crackdown on the infringement of well-known foreign and domestic brands' intellectual property rights (IPRs).Greater efforts must be made to fight the production and sale of pirated books, audio, video, software, medicine, food and agricultural products, Liu Jinguo, deputy minister of public security, said at a meeting in Beijing Friday, according to a statement posted on the MPS website Saturday.The special nationwide campaign started Friday and will last until March 2011.At a Nov. 5 meeting, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao urged government agencies to target the root causes of IPRs infringement while strengthening IPRs protection.In a statement Xinhua received Friday, the MPS said Chinese police in a special March 2006 operation uncovered 3,775 cases of IPRs infringement.In a July 2007 campaign conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Intelligence, Chinese police arrested over 20 in connection to the cases.

BEIJING, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) Friday welcomed ruling from the World Trade Organization (WTO) that the European Union (EU) anti-dumping duties on Chinese screws and bolts were discriminatory and are in violation of global commerce rules.For a long time, the EU has been requiring Chinese exporters to prove they meet with the "single duty" requirements when they are responding to anti-dumping cases, bringing a heavy burden and unfair treatment to Chinese companies, said an official with the MOC.In particular the WTO ruled the EU's single duty requirements and practices are discriminatory and violated WTO rules.China urged the EU to respect the WTO ruling and rid itself of codes or practices that go against WTO rules and treat Chinese exporters fairly to ensure normal trade between China and the EU, the official said.At the beginning of 2009, the EU decided to impose anti-dumping duties of up to 87 percent for the next five years on fasteners imported from China.The WTO set up an expert panel on Oct. 23, 2009 after China initiated the WTO case on July 31, 2009, saying anti-dumping measures taken by the EU against the import of Chinese steel fasteners violated WTO trade rules.

BEIJING, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- China will increase the flexibility of the yuan exchange rate and further push forward the opening-up of its financial markets, a senior central bank official said Friday.China will continue the reform of the yuan exchange rate mechanism and keep the rate basically stable at a reasonable and balanced level, Li Dongrong, assistant governor of the People's Bank of China, said at a forum. The speech was posted on the central bank's website.The Chinese yuan strengthened to a record high against the U.S. dollar Friday, the central parity rate reaching 6.5896, the second straight day it has been set below 6.6 per dollar, according to the China Foreign Exchange Trading System.The currency has risen by more than 3 percent since the country's central bank announced in June 2010 it would further reform the yuan exchange rate formation mechanism to improve its flexibility.Li also said the central bank will work to expand trials of cross-border yuan settlement, to facilitate trade and investment.The central bank will promote the policy of allowing exporters to park their foreign revenue overseas, Li said, adding that it will further develop the foreign reserves market and create tools to hedge exchange rate risk.Li's speech came after the central bank announced Thursday the nation's qualified businesses and banks may settle their overseas direct investment in yuan, a move that expands the Chinese currency's global reach and eases excess domestic liquidity concerns.Li also voiced concern about loose credit globally, saying such policies are adding to capital-inflow and currency-appreciation pressures, leading to asset bubbles in some emerging economies.China still faces many challenges, Li said. "Expectations for inflation are rising. Housing prices are still high in some cities. Pressure from continuous inflows of foreign capital is increasingly evident," he said.The central bank will soundly manage money supply and maintain reasonable growth in credit, he added.
