Tuesday marks the biggest day in the nominating race for Democratic hopefuls in this year’s presidential election. Nearly one-third of all pledged delegates will be up for grabs in Tuesday’s race. In total, 14 states and American Samoa will help decide who the Democratic nominee will be. Who votes?Voters in the following states, and one territory, can cast ballots on Tuesday:Alabama (52 delegates)American Samoa (6 delegates)Arkansas (31 delegates)California (415 delegates)Colorado (67 delegates)Maine (24 delegates)Massachusetts (91 delegates)Minnesota (75 delegates)North Carolina (110 delegates)Oklahoma (37 delegates)Tennessee (64 delegates)Texas (228 delegates)Utah (29 delegates)Vermont (16 delegates)Virginia (99 delegates)Remaining candidates:Sen. Bernie Sanders (60 delegates)Vice President Joe Biden (54 delegates)Sen. Elizabeth Warren (8 delegates)Mayor Mike Bloomberg (0 delegates)Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (0 delegates)Who left the race?Since Biden won in dominating fashion on Saturday, businessman Tom Steyer, Sen. Amy Klobuchar and Mayor Pete Buttigieg have all withdrawn from the race. Klobuchar and Buttigieg both endorsed Biden on Monday. Who’s the frontrunner?Going into last Saturday’s race in South Carolina, many considered Sanders the frontrunner to win the nomination. His frontrunner status has been brought into question thanks to the events of the last three days. Biden’s surge in South Carolina, plus the sudden withdrawal of several other candidates, could give Biden a boost to what was a slumping campaign. Biden’s campaign has struggled to raise money to have the sort of advertising that Bloomberg and Sanders have. But with several major endorsements, Biden has seen his share of free advertising through news reports and buzz around the campaign. Bloomberg’s entrySuper Tuesday marks the first time Bloomberg will be competing for votes. He has spent some of his fortune to put his message before voters. For instance, on Sunday during primetime, he took out advertising on several major networks to talk about the coronavirus. He also purchased ad time during the Super Bowl. But Bloomberg also did not see much of a boost coming out of two debates, his first of which involved attacks from Warren about his handling of non-disclosure agreements with his employees. What polling saysRecent polls have Sanders ahead nationally, and in leading in many Super Tuesday states including Texas and California. A caveat though is those polls were conducted before Saturday, and how Buttigieg, Klobuchar and Steyer voters sway could determine who wins the majority of delegates on Super Tuesday. How it could play outSuper Tuesday could give some clarity as to whether the race will be decided during the primary season, or at the Democratic National Convention in July. A candidate is required to win 1991 pledged delegates going into the convention. Failure to win a majority of delegates will result in hundreds of so-called “Super Delegates” to cast a ballot during a second round of voting. How likely of a scenario is a brokered convention? Election forecast site 538 gives the odds of a brokered convention at 2 out of 3. But the site also gives both Sanders and Biden a one in six chance to win the nomination outright. Why 15% matters? In order to gain delegates from a state, earning 15% of the vote is the minimum threshold. Among the candidates in each state who win 15% of the vote, the number of delegates is allocated proportionally based on their performance throughout the entire state and within the state’s congressional districts. 3588

The two-time defending champs Golden State Warriors were buoyed early in Game 5 on Monday by the return of reigning Finals MVP Kevin Durant. But two minutes into the second quarter, Durant reinjured the same leg that kept him out of the first four games of the NBA Finals. The Warriors then proceeded to blow a double-figure lead in the second quarter. But a 9-0 run later helped Golden State erase a six-point deficit in the final three minutes to win Game 5 by a 106-105 margin. The Raptors lead the best-of-7 series 3-2.Durant's status is unknown, but he was seen wearing a boot and on crutches. The Warriors said that he will have an MRI performed on Tuesday."Prayers to KD. He gave us what he could," Warriors star Stephen Curry told ABC after the game.Durant's injury prompted applause by some Raptors fans in Toronto. The gesture clearly disturbed members of the Warriors. Members of the Raptors gestured to the crowd to stop cheering as Durant was helped off the court. Kevin Durant is helped to the 1019

This is the extraordinary tale of how a massive, strange-looking fish wound up on a beach on the other side of the world from where it lives. The seven-foot fish washed up at UC Santa Barbara's Coal Oil Point Reserve in Southern California last week. Researchers first thought it was a similar and more common species of sunfish -- until someone posted photos on a nature site and experts weighed in.What transpired after that surprised researchers from California to Australia and New Zealand. It turned out to be a species never seen before in North America. It's called the hoodwinker sunfish."When the clear pictures came through, I thought there was no doubt. This is totally a hoodwinker," said Marianne Nyegaard, a marine scientist who discovered the species in 2017. "I couldn't believe it. I nearly fell out of my chair."How the hoodwinker got its nameNyegaard spent years chasing the hoodwinker sunfish before she located and named the fish. All cases of the big fish were found in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Chile, she said. Except for one time in the 1890s, when drawings and records documented the fish appearing in the Netherlands.Scientists say there are five species of saltwater sunfish, and they come from different places. One enjoys tropical waters, another likes the subtropics and the hoodwinker prefers temperate water, Nyegaard told CNN. She works in the marine division at the Auckland War Memorial Museum in New Zealand."This is why it's so intriguing why it has turned up in California," she said. "We know it has the temperate distribution around here and off the coast of Chile, but then how did it cross the equator and turn up by you guys? It's intriguing what made this fish cross the equator."The antics of this wayward fish are comical, especially considering how the species got its name.As Nyegaard researched the fish, she realized some species of sunfish had been misidentified. One species that was thought to be rare was very common, while another fish thought to be common was misidentified, she said."It had gone unnoticed because no one really realized it looked different. There's a long history of confusion about the species in the sunfish family," Nyegaard said. "This fish had managed to stay out of sight and out of everybody's attention. It had been taken for mola mola (an ocean sunfish) so it was hoodwinking us all."And a bit of hoodwinking is what it was doing to researchers in California, too.Scientists first thought it was a different type of sunfishAn intern at Coal Oil Point Reserve alerted conservation specialist Jessica Nielsen to the dead beached sunfish on February 19. When Nielsen first saw it, the unusual features of the fish caught her eye."This is certainly the most remarkable organism I have seen wash up on the beach in my four years at the reserve," Nielsen said in a UC Santa Barbara press release. She posted some photos of the fish on the reserve's Facebook page. When colleague Thomas Turner saw the photos later that day, he rushed to the beach with his wife and young son.Turner, an evolutionary biologist who is six feet tall, stretched out his arms to show the scale of the seven-foot-long fish. He snapped some photos of what he thought was an ocean sunfish, a rare sight up-close, he said."It's the most unusual fish you've ever seen," said the UC Santa Barbara associate professor. "It has no tail. All of its teeth are fused, so it doesn't have any teeth. It's just got this big round opening for a mouth."Turner posted his photos on 3545

The Trump administration is dropping its designation of China as a currency manipulator in advance of the signing Wednesday of a Phase 1 U.S.-China trade agreement. The preliminary pact that the two sides are set to sign includes a section that's intended to prevent China from manipulating its currency to gain trade advantages. The action announced Monday comes five months after the Trump administration had branded China a currency manipulator — the first time that any country had been so named since 1994 during the Clinton administration. 558

The US will dramatically expand its efforts to enforce a rule that denies funding to overseas aid groups and health organizations that provide or promote abortion services, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Tuesday. The move will undermine a broad array of health programs focused on HIV, malaria, maternal and child health, and likely result in more unsafe abortions, aid groups said."We will refuse to provide assistance to groups who provide funding to other groups" that provide or discuss abortion with clients, Pompeo said in an announcement at the State Department. "American taxpayer dollars will not be used to underwrite abortions."Pompeo said that the US would also reduce funding for the Organization of American States for promoting abortion. The Mexico City policy, also known as the global gag rule, is a US mandate that requires foreign organizations to pledge that they won't perform or promote abortion as a condition of receiving US funding for family planning programs.'Just wrong'The policy, applied sporadically by US administrations and broadened by the Trump administration, has been criticized for undercutting services that reduce maternal death and abortions, provide treatment for HIV, tuberculosis and the Zika virus, among other health challenges. The Trump administration, which reapplied and expanded the rule in January 2017, told foreign aid and medical groups that if they promoted or performed abortions, they would be denied US funding for nearly all health assistance programs, including nutrition, malaria, tuberculosis, tropical diseases and maternal and child health, including water, sanitation and hygiene programs.Pompeo said that claims that the expanded policy has negatively impacted HIV, tuberculosis, malaria & unsafe abortion are "just wrong."Spike in unsafe abortionsBut aid groups in Africa and Latin America are documenting a steep decline in services in areas where clinics have closed, staff have been laid off and family planning programs have been eliminated because of the policy."It affects other communicable diseases like tuberculosis, malaria, HIV," Mevine Ouyo, manager of a medical center in Nairobi, Kenya, told CNN. "You cannot separate some of these conditions from reproductive health services."A 2011 2285
