As more and more public spaces open back up, many people are finding themselves a little jumpy when they hear someone cough nearby. Are they sick, is it allergies, is it coronavirus?Chances are, we are jumping to conclusions about those “sick” sounds we find disgusting, according to a recently published study from the University of Michigan and University of California, Irvine.“We find no evidence that perceivers can reliably detect pathogen threats from cough and sneeze sounds, even though they are reasonably certain they can,” said Nicholas Michalak, the study’s lead author and a University of Michigan psychology graduate student.In other words, we humans are not very good at distinguishing the seriousness of a cough or sniffle by the sound of it. In fact, the study found that the more disgusting a person perceived the sound to be, the more likely they were to believe the sound came from an infected person, regardless of whether it did.Previous research has indicated people can accurately diagnose infection in others using other senses, like sight and smell.The research is based on four studies that had participants judge whether a cough or sneeze sound came from people infected with a communicable (easily spread) disease or not. On average, participants guessed four out of ten sounds correctly.“Moreover, there was no evidence that accuracy improved when participants knew the true number of infectious sounds in advance or when participants focused on how clear or disgusting they perceived the sounds,” Michalak said. “Despite this poor overall accuracy, perceivers consistently reported reasonable certainty in their judgments.”The study’s authors theorized that people have a belief that a sound that disgusts them is likely to represent a disease threat - this could lead them to exhibit biases to avoid interactions with others who make disgusting but noninfectious noises, according to Mickalak.The study’s co-authors are Oliver Sng, assistant professor of psychological science at UC-Irvine, and U-M graduate student Iris Wang and U-M associate professor of psychology Joshua Ackerman.Read the full study here. 2150

Stephens, chief financial officer for AT&T, said at a Wells Fargo conference.The stock of Time Warner, which owns CNN, fell more than 6.5% by Wednesday afternoon. AT&T was flat.The New York Times and the Financial Times also reported Wednesday afternoon that the DOJ was demanding the sale of CNN or Turner as a condition of approving the deal.The wireless giant previously said that it expected the acquisition to take effect by the end of this year. The deal was announced more than a year ago.The U.S. government is causing the delay. Stephens' comments effectively confirmed last week's Wall Street Journal report that the government is "actively considering" an antitrust lawsuit to block the impending acquisition.While the Justice Department declined to comment, sources had told the Journal that the department will sue if it can't reach an agreement on so-called "conditions" that are attached to the deal.The Journal story was an unwelcome surprise for AT&T executives. Transactions like Comcast's acquisition of NBCUniversal in 2011 are routinely approved with conditions attached."For over 40 years, vertical mergers like this one have always been approved because they benefit consumers without removing any competitors from the market," AT&T said last week. "While we won't comment on our discussions with DOJ, we see no reason in the law or the facts why this transaction should be an exception."The Justice Department's hardline approach to AT&T -- belying the business-friendly image of the Trump administration -- has spurred questions about Trump's personal interest in the deal.Time Warner's portfolio also includes Warner Bros., HBO, TNT and TBS.As a candidate, President Trump publicly vowed to block the deal. Over the summer The New York Times reported that Trump aides discussed using the pending deal as a powerful form of leverage over CNN's coverage."You have to wonder" about the behind-the-scenes machinations "given that Trump has a vendetta against CNN and has openly talked about using these types of deals to punish them," Trevor Timm, the executive director of the Freedom of the Press Foundation, told CNN last week.On last Sunday's "Reliable Sources" on CNN, when asked whether Trump has had any involvement, counselor to the president Kellyanne Conway said "we're not going to interfere with that here."When asked whether the president still personally opposes the AT&T-Time Warner deal, Conway said, "I haven't discussed that with him lately."Trump was quoted criticizing the DOJ several times last week. As the economy slowly reopens, Americans are still filing for unemployment at record rates. For some, staying off the job makes more sense than returning to work.“I’m one of those teachers at high risk,” said Patty Candelaria, a teacher in Austin, Texas. “I’ve had open heart surgery three times. I’m concerned because we can’t predict the future.”She just completed her 20th year of teaching.“I’ve never felt so afraid to be face to face with students and worrying about what germs we’re all carrying,” she said.Candelaria has been teaching summer school from her virtual home classroom. She’s concerned to go back to school in the fall if she’s forced to be there in person.“Those classrooms are germ factories on the best day,” said Lily Eskelsen Garcia, President of the National Education Association. “No one wants those public schools open more than the people who love those kids and work in those schools. But we want them open safely.”“I feel like it’s our district’s responsibility to protect,” Candelaria said.She’s not alone. From rideshare drivers to teachers and flight attendants, workers are having to consider many factors before returning to work.“I think it’s quite scary to go back to work if your employer hasn't put the appropriate safeguards in place,” said Peter Ganong, an Assistant Professor of Public Policy at the University of Chicago.Ganong has been studying the impact of unemployment insurance.“We found that it did quite well in the sense that it has replaced all of the lost income for people who have lost their jobs, and then some above and beyond that as well,” he said.Payouts are usually low to encourage people to apply for jobs, but the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security, or CARES, Act changed that.“What the federal government did is it said, ‘We’re going to add an extra 0 per week to everyone's UI benefits, and that was designed and intended to raise up everyone’s benefits precisely because there are no jobs available in many places,” Ganong explained.That’s exactly what happened to flight attendant Brittany Horn.“I am on unemployment,” Horn said. “A lot of our regular routes were cut and so there were just too many flight attendants and not enough flying.”“Most of the junior flight attendants probably are making more on unemployment,” she explained. “But it also depends on how many hours you work.”Across multiple industries, this has been a discussion. Unemployed workers are making more on unemployment than they did working their jobs. That brought fairness into question.“If you're a janitor and you work at the hospital, you're getting the same pay as before and you’re facing increased risk at your job,” Gangong said. “If you're a janitor and you're at a school, you're going to get paid 40 to 50% more on UI benefits than you were getting when you were working.”Ganong estimates about two thirds of unemployed workers have benefits that are greater than their prior wage. But that will soon change. As businesses start opening back up, that option won’t be available for many.“If your employer calls you back to work, even if your UI benefits are higher than your prior wage, you're required to go back to work or you'll lose your benefits,” Ganong said.Under the CARES Act, that higher level of benefits is set to expire July 31.Brittany’s three-month voluntary leave comes to an end in August.“If the flights don’t start picking up significantly, because right now with the CARES Act, we can’t get furloughed. But starting in October, that’s when technically we could. So, I think everyone’s keeping their hopes up that we are able to continue working come October,” Horn said.And Candelaria is awaiting a decision from the district on what going back to school looks like, before factoring in her health concerns.“None of us want it, so that’s why we’re staying safe at home and building classrooms in homes,” she said. 3910
