Former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat, underwent surgery for pancreatic cancer Monday, according to a statement from Reid's family."Today, Former Democratic Leader Harry Reid underwent surgery at Johns Hopkins Cancer Center to remove a tumor from his pancreas," the family's statement said. "His doctors caught the problem early during a routine screening and his surgeons are confident that the surgery was a success and that the prognosis for his recovery is good. He will undergo chemotherapy as the next step in his treatment. He is now out of surgery, in good spirits and resting with his family. He is grateful to his highly skilled team of doctors and to all who have sent and continue to send their love and support."The news of Reid's cancer was first reported by a reporter at local station KLAS, a CNN affiliate.Reid, who was first elected to the Senate in 1986, retired at the end of his term?in early 2017, when he was Senate minority leader.Sen. Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat who succeeded Reid as minority leader, tweeted shortly after the news broke."Spoken to family and it seems @SenatorReid's operation went well. We are all praying for dear Harry's speedy recovery," he tweeted. 1248

Former President George W. Bush said Sunday that he has extended congratulations to President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris on winning the 2020 presidential election, breaking with prominent members of his party in the process. In a statement released by the George W. Bush Presidential Center, the 43rd president said he is optimistic that Biden will help bring the country together."Though we have political differences, I know Joe Biden to be a good man, who has won his opportunity to lead and unify our country," Bush said in a statement. "The President-elect reiterated that while he ran as a Democrat, he will govern for all Americans. I offered him the same thing I offered Presidents Trump and Obama: my prayers for his success, and my pledge to help in any way I can."Bush also acknowledged President Donald Trump's intent to challenge the election results on allegations of massive voter fraud, which thus far have proven to be baseless."President Trump has the right to request recounts and pursue legal challenges, and any unresolved issues will be properly adjudicated," Bush said. "The American people can have confidence that this election was fundamentally fair, its integrity will be upheld, and its outcome is clear."By issuing congratulations to Biden, Bush — the only former Republican president currently living — has broken with the majority of top Republicans currently serving in government. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy have not yet publicly acknowledged Biden as President-elect, and several other prominent Republicans have publicly refused to declare Biden the victor despite projections from most major media outlets.Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, and Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan are among the few Republicans who have acknowledged Biden's projected victory."We must come together for the sake of our families and neighbors, and for our nation and its future," Bush said.Bush also congratulated America as a whole for setting records in voter turnout. Biden and Trump both received more votes in the 2020 election than any other presidential candidate in previous elections."The fact that so many of our fellow citizens participated in this election is a positive sign of the health of our democracy and a reminder to the world of its strength," Bush said. "No matter how you voted, your vote counted." 2408

Former Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin admitted Friday that it hurt "a bit" to hear Sen. John McCain say he wished he picked Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman as his running mate in 2008."I don't lie, so I'll tell you -- a bit. You know, I think I described it earlier as a gut punch," Palin told NBC News in an interview Friday. "But again, I'm going to choose to look back on the good times that we did have together."In his forthcoming memoir, "The Restless Wave," and in a separate documentary, the Arizona Republican said he regrets not choosing Lieberman, a Democrat-turned-independent senator, calling it "another mistake that I made," The New York Times reported. Palin, the former Alaska GOP governor, was ultimately on the 2008 ticket with McCain.Palin's supporters have jumped on McCain's remarks and implied they mean he regrets choosing Palin as his running mate.Palin told NBC News that she hopes McCain, who is battling brain cancer, finds some "positive aspect in decisions that he's made in the past -- even about that campaign.""It is kind of sad to hear that he and or someone speaking for him does have regrets," Palin said. "And I hope that he finds that kind of peace and contentment also to be able to look back on decisions and realize, really, things work out the way that they're supposed to work out."She called McCain a "friend" and said she will "never disparage someone who has served our country and made a lot of sacrifices as a vet.""I always had a lot of respect for his maverick nature," Palin said. "He going rogue -- wish he would have been kind of going rogue more on the common-sense conservative side of some issues. No, I certainly have respect for many of the things that he's accomplished."Palin told The Daily Mail in an interview published Thursday that hearing McCain's admission that he regrets not choosing Lieberman is "like a perpetual gut-punch," but she attributes "a lot of what we're hearing and reading regarding McCain's statements to his ghostwriter or ghostwriters."The-CNN-Wire 2058

For decades, countless Americans buying a new set of wheels love that "new car smell." But Ford Motor Company may be trying to get rid of it.The automaker has filed a patent application for a new method to eliminate that new car aroma. The process calls for "baking" vehicles until the odor is gone. It works by parking vehicles in the sun and opening the windows until the smell is gone.Ford is looking to accommodate the world's largest car market – China, where drivers reportedly do not like the new car smell as much as American drivers do. 552

For these 3,000 teens, there's no such thing as going back to normal. On Wednesday, they'll return to the same school where 17 of their classmates and teachers were gunned down. But instead of math and history lessons, their minds will be occupied by the trauma of gunfire and grief."I don't think I'll ever recover from this," said Daniel Bishop, a sophomore at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. "How am I supposed to (go back to) a place where 17 of my peers were slaughtered?"  496
