Tropical Storm Michael formed near the Yucatan Peninsula on Sunday, and it's on track to wallop the United States."The current forecast indicates the storm entering the Gulf of Mexico by Monday morning, strengthening to a hurricane by early Wednesday and likely targeting the Florida panhandle by late Wednesday," CNN meteorologist Gene Norman said.As of 4 p.m. Sunday, Tropical Storm Michael was centered about 130 miles southeast of Cozumel, Mexico, the National Hurricane Center said.But it's so big, people 200 miles away from the center are getting hit with tropical-storm-force winds (which have increased to at least 50 mph)."Strengthening is forecast during the next several days," the hurricane center said.Track the stormBefore Michael hits the United States, it's expected to dump 3 to 7 inches of rain on western Cuba."Isolated maximum amounts of 12 inches are possible in western Cuba," the hurricane center said. U.S. employers added a substantial 4.8 million jobs in June, and the unemployment rate fell to 11.1%, as the job market improved for a second straight month yet remained far short of regaining the colossal losses it suffered this spring. The nation has now recovered roughly one-third of the 22 million jobs it lost to the pandemic recession.The monthly job report coincided with the Department of Labor's weekly report on unemployment claims, which indicated that 1.4 million Americans filed initial claims for unemployment during the week ending June 27. That brings a 15-week total to about 47.9 million claims.Thursday's figures were down about 60,000 from last week's unemployment filings. It marked the fourth straight week where unemployment claims have hovered at about 1.5 million.Weekly claims for unemployment have been falling for about four straight months after peaking at about 6 million a week in late March. But weekly unemployment claims remain historically high.Prior to the pandemic, the record high for weekly unemployment claims came in 2006, when 665,000 people filed for unemployment. Two moms wanted a safe place to get their young children involved in the protests calling for police reform and racial equality. So, they created a group called Tiny Activists ATL, where their children could speak out in their own way.“We are tiny people, demanding for a change,” said Addison Carroll, who isn’t even 10 years old yet.“We just want to make our voices heard,” said tiny activist Sawyer Tinguely.These pint-sized protestors have a big mission. “We want to see that everybody can be treated equal so that everyone can make a change,” said Carroll of speaking out about voting rights.From marching the streets to going to the polls, these future voters understand how the system works. Even though they’re not of age yet, they want to be involved.“What Black Lives Matter means to me is that black people can go outside and not feel bad because of the way they look,” said Carroll.“It means that all lives are equal. All people are the same,” said 7-year-old Tinguely.These kids want reform, especially after the death of George Floyd.“What I saw on that video was horrible,” said Carroll. When asked how watching the video of George Floyd’s arrest made her feel, Carroll stated, "Betrayed. Police officers are supposed to protect us, not harm us."“I think it’s pretty rude of that person who killed him to be mean to him just because he used counterfeit money,” said Tinguely.The group gathers each weekend, and their youthful activities, like drawing with chalk or making signs, comes with a discussion about real-life issues facing families today. “We’re planning to go to more protests. We’ve already been to like 10 so far. It’s actually pretty fun,” said Sawyer.“Our goal is to get our kids educated,” said mom Mary Williams. Williams and fellow Atlanta mother of three, Fran Carroll, started the group to make sure their children understood the unrest happening in their community.“This is what we stand for as a family,” said Fran Carroll. “This is the side we’re choosing to stand on in history. Two US Marine aircraft crashed off the coast of Japan, the US Marine Corps announced Wednesday in a statement.It is believed five individuals were on board a KC-130 and two individuals were in a F/A-18, two US defense officials told CNN. At least one Marine had been rescued just before 6 p.m. ET, according to a Marine Corps spokesman."Search and rescue operations continue for US Marine Corps aircraft that were involved in a mishap off of the coast of Japan around 2:00 am Dec. 6," local time, a statement by the US Marine Corps reads.The planes "had launched from Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni and were conducting regularly scheduled training when the mishap occurred," according to the statement.The crashes happened approximately 200 miles off the coast of Iwakuni, Japan, a US Marine Corps official tells CNN.The primary mission of a KC-130 is airborne refueling. It is not known at this time if the aircraft was refueling at the time of the crash."The circumstances of the mishap are currently under investigation," the statement said.."Japanese search and rescue aircraft immediately responded to aid in recovery," according to the statement.Wednesday's incident comes on the same day that the Marines released a report on a crash in July 2017, also involving a KC-130 variant that killed 15 Marines and one sailor.That KC-130T crash took place in Leflore County, Mississippi, and the "investigation determined that the aircraft's propeller did not receive proper depot-level maintenance during its last overhaul ... in September 2011, which missed corrosion that may have contributed to the propeller blade" coming loose during the flight and going into the aircraft's fuselage, according to a Marine Corps statement on the investigation. 1759
