BEIJING, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- China's new rules on foreign media reflected the country's determination to carry on the policy of opening up to the outside world, a senior information official said here Saturday, hours after the issuing of the new rules.     Wang Chen said this in a ceremony for the establishment of "Israel Epstein Research Center" of Qinghua University.     Wang pointed out that the new rules draw on the experience of providing service and managerial assistance for foreign correspondents during Beijing Olympics, and they will make foreign correspondents reporting activities in China more convenient.     "Chinese government welcomes foreign media and reporters, and we hope more stories about the country will be told to the world. We will spare no effort to provide help and service to them," he said," meanwhile, we hope foreign media and reporters could abide by Chinese laws and professional morals, to report unbiasedly and justly, so to promote understanding and cooperation between China and the rest of the world."     According to the new rules, foreign reporters wishing to interview organizations or individuals in China no longer need to be received and accompanied by the Chinese organizations.     An item in the old version was also cancelled, which asked foreign reporters to get approval from the local government's foreign affairs department when they wanted to do reporting in the regions open to them.     Seymour Topping, a famous journalist from the United States and the former administrator of the Pulitzer Prizes, told Xinhua that the removal of the restrictions on foreign correspondents may mark an important progress of China,     China should learn to tolerate the judgement of the outside world, be it positive or negative. That will show a more confident China, he said.     Huang Youyi, deputy director-general and editor-in-chief of China International Publishing Group, said:" Sadly some foreign media reported inaccurately about China. BEIJING, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) summit concluded its first closed session here Friday evening, with the global financial crisis topping the agenda.     Leaders and representatives of the 45 ASEM members attended the meeting which lasted two hours.     Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao chaired the meeting and made the leading speech.     Wen called on Asian and European nations to make concerted effort in response to the global financial crisis triggered by the U.S. credit crunch, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.     Wen said the international financial and economic situation is an issue linked up with the direct interests of all ASEM members, and that is why the issue was listed the top subject for discussion.     "Asian and European nations are an important force to safeguard international financial stability and promote world economic growth," Wen said. "We should make concerted effort to show the world our confidence, unity and cooperation," he added.     He said relevant countries and organizations have taken measures in response to the global financial crisis, and China hopes these measures would achieve the desired results soon.     He also called for global action to jointly respond to the crisis.     The leaders present at the meeting had an "enthusiastic and in-depth" discussion on how to tackle the crisis, as well as how to promote Asia-Europe trade and investment, the Foreign Ministry said, giving no further details.     The seventh ASEM summit, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, will all together have four closed sessions.

BEIJING, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- The State Grid Corp. of China (SGCC), the country's biggest power supplier, said Sunday that its 2008 net profit fell almost 80 percent year on year due to natural disasters and higher power prices.     Net profit was 9.66 billion yuan (1.4 billion U.S. dollars), compared with 47.1 billion yuan in 2007.     Revenue rose 13.8 percent to 1.156 trillion yuan from a year earlier, the state-owned company noted.     The power distributor suffered more than 22 billion yuan (3.2 billion U.S. dollars) of direct economic loss in the worst winter weather in at least 50 years in southern China and the May 12 earthquake.     China raised the on-grid power price by 0.017 yuan per kwh in June and 0.02 yuan kwh in August to around 0.3 yuan per kwh on average to offset rising costs in power plants. But retail household power prices were capped amid concerns of a higher inflation.     The company said it planned to invest 83 billion yuan (12 billion U.S. dollars) in ultra-high voltage (UHV) power lines in 2009 and 2010 to make long-distance transmission more efficient.     China's power demand and installed power generating capacity would likely double to 7.4 trillion kwh and 1.47 billion kw respectively in 2020, it forecasted.

Among the delegations were Japanese youth from various walks of life, including parliamentarians, government officials, businessmen and journalists.
